2 ABOUT LANGRI TANGPA CENTRE Langri Tangpa Centre is a teaching and meditation centre in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. We provide a friendly and supportive environment for learning and putting into practice the teachings of the Buddha. We are open to everyone with an interest in making their life happy and meaningful. There is no need to be a Buddhist to benefit from the courses on offer, and we encourage questioning and open dialogue. Langri Tangpa Centre is a non-profit organisation, founded in 1982, and run entirely by volunteers. We are affiliated with the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), an organisation of over 140 centres throughout the world, founded by Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche. We seek to reflect their teachings throughout our extensive program, and to support our principal inspiration, HH the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet. LTC is incorporated in Queensland under the Associations Incorporation Act 1981 (QLD). We operate an ATO endorsed School Building Fund with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status and are sanctioned as a community purpose organisation under the Collections Act 1966 (QLD). ABN OPENING HOURS Reception, shop, library and meditation hall are open before and after class. As the centre is run by volunteers, sometimes the reception closes whilst class is on. 3 LEARN TO MEDITATE Sitting with the Buddha Guided Meditation Thursday evenings 12 October 16 November (6.30 pm 8 pm) Connect with your innate potential for a calm and peaceful mind. Practice short, easy breathing meditations and enjoy a guided meditation on the Buddha to develop his enlightened qualities within your own mind. Informal discussion and questions. 6-weeks with registered FPMT teachers Miffi Maxmillion and Ven. Lozang Lhagsam. By donation (suggested $10 but no set amount). No need to book, just come along. Guided Meditation, DVD & Chai Sunday mornings (except for 22 October, Geshe Zopa is teaching) (10.30 am 12 pm) Spend a relaxed morning enjoying a guided mindfulness meditation and visualisation of the Buddha. We watch a Buddhist documentary, and end with delicious chai and biscuits. On-going drop-in classes led by the LTC nuns. No need to book, just come along. By donation (suggested $10, but there is no set amount). BALANCING EMOTIONS Finding Balance in a Stressful World Tuesday evenings 17 October 14 November (6.30 pm 8.30 pm) Stress, anxiety and depression are a common part of our modern lifestyle, yet mental well-being is still within our grasp. Understanding how our emotions tick, we can use simple tools to prevent being hijacked by them. We can fine tune our emotional reactions to increase resilience. It s a balancing act but surprisingly simple to apply. Led by Cultivating Emotional Balance (CEB) accredited teacher, Corey Jackson. No need to book, just come along. 4 YOGA Morning Yoga Classes Monday & Friday with Jill Shaw-Feather Wednesdays with Cindy Hartigan (9.30 am 11 am) Yoga for all levels and age groups, including seniors and beginners. Relaxation, personal instruction and mindful movement helps you unwind from workday stress, let go of tension and feel revitalised. A flowing style that allows you to work to your own capacity. Develop strength and flexibility by working to your own capacity, and as deeply as you feel comfortable. Linked by the breath, this flowing blend of asana (postures) pranayama (breath work) relaxation and meditation helps you to become centred, relaxed and revitalized. No need to book, just come along! $15 per class (cash only please). The room is climate controlled, and yoga mats, blankets and equipment are supplied. Please BYO water bottle, wear loose and comfortable clothes, and arrive at least 15 minutes early if this is your first class. Enter through the doors at the street end, as reception may not be open. All yoga teachers are trained and accredited. The yoga style is similar to Hatha yoga, and all three instructors have studied at the yoga school of Radiant Light. Evening Yoga Classes Mondays with Amanda Lynn Wednesdays with Cinday Hartigan (6.30 pm 8 pm) Vinyasa flow, Sun Salutations, stretching and strengthening for a deeply nourishing practice. Yoga helps calmi the mind and leave you feeling both relaxed and invigorated. Suitable for all levels of experience, with variations to suit the individual. There is also the opportunity to explore more challenging poses in a safe and nurturing environment. Miffi Maxmillion is the Spiritual Program Co-ordinator and teaches the beginner s courses. She has been at LTC since 1997, when she took over from her mother Inta Mckimm, who originally founded the centre in Miffi has a background in circus costumes and couture, and says she enjoys watching far too much TV to relax. 3

5 BUDDHISM FOR BEGINNERS Foundation Course Thursday mornings 14 September 10 November (10.30 am pm) Key Buddhist topics to help us live with an open heart and a clear mind. Topics covered: how to meditate, our potential for buddhahood, developing a faith based on logic and experience, investigating what happens at death and reincarnation, how karma works, and cultivating compassion. 9-weeks with registered FPMT teacher Miffi Maxmillion. Classes are sequential but you can join at any time. By donation (suggested $10 but there is no set amount). Everyday Dharma for Daily Life Tuesday evenings 19 September 10 October (6.30 pm 8 pm) Transform your daily activities into lasting happiness and make every moment of the day meaningful! What to do when you have little time to meditate; setting goals that are both powerful and personal. 4-weeks with registered FPMT teacher Miffi Maxmillion. Classes are sequential but you can join at any time. By donation (suggested $10 but there is no set amount). No need to book, just come along. Notes for the course are $20 Starting Point Saturday 7 October (2 pm 3.30 pm) Come along to our beginner's welcome and orientation, and enjoy a guided tour, short meditation, and an information session about the program and the centre. Discover which elements of our program will suit you, and share delicious chai tea afterwards. First Saturday of the month! Everyone is welcome! This event is freely offered. 6 VISITING TEACHERS Mind Training Like the Rays of the Sun Friday fortnights 6 October (only one this month) (7.30 pm 9 pm) Teachings on mind-training on the path to enlightenment, working with difficult people and situations with compassion and wisdom. Mind training helps develop the altruistic mind of enlightenment, and transform adversity into advantage. These instructions help us to open our heart to others and transform difficulties into something valuable. Led by FPMT registered teacher, Geshe Phuntsok Tsultrim, who visits from our sister centre, Chenrezig Institute. For all levels established students and the committed beginner. No need to book, just come along. By donation (suggested $10 but no set amount). Join us for delicious Geshe Soup from 6 pm before the teachings (by donation) Geshe Phuntsok Tsultrim is the resident Geshe at our sister centre, Chenrezig Institute. He was born in Tibet and at age 14 was admitted to Sera Je monastery, where after twenty years studying the five textual systems, he completed his Geshe degree (equivalent to a doctorate in Buddhist studies). He taught Buddhist philosophy at TCV School, Bylakuppee for two years before returning to Sera Je. Geshe Tsultrim also spent some time teaching at Root Institute where he was immensely popular for the warm and approachable way in which he presented the Dharma. Geshe Tenzin Zopa s enthusiasm and warmth have captured the hearts of all who attend. His humble manner, gentle humour and clear and topical explanations of Buddhist philosophy engage everyone who listens to his teachings. Geshe Zopa is featured in the 2008 documentary film Unmistaken Child, which follows his search for the reincarnation of his beloved master, Geshe Lama Konchog. He was born in Nepal, and become a monk at age nine. As a child he studied Tibetan language, English, Nepali, art, lama dance, ritual, puja, and Buddhist philosophy. He also did a 6-month retreat with Geshe Lama Konchog back in the cave in Tsum. He was the top student in debate, writing, and memorization at Sera Je, and he always ranked among the top five students out of more than 5000 monks. In 2007 he completed his studies and graduated as one of the youngest Geshes (equivalent to a PhD or Doctor of Divinity) in Tibetan Buddhism. In his youth he skipped four grades, and the Dalai Lama let him take his final Buddhist exams four years ahead of schedule. He speaks fluent English, Tibetan, Nepali, and Hindi, and a little Mandarin. 5

Geshe Zopa s teachings are clear and accessible and highly recommended for beginner s and first-timers to Buddhism! Geshe-la is fluent in English, and often teaches directly to questions from the audience, on the current issues and concerns that face us all in this modern world bringing the timeless wisdom of the Buddha into a modern setting. Led by FPMT touring teacher, Geshe Tenzin Zopa. The public talk is by donation (suggested $20, but no set amount). No need to book, just come along! Tea and coffee in reception before and after the talk. A Wise Heart for the Modern World 1-day COURSES Saturday 21 & Sunday 22 October (9.30 am 4 pm each day) Don t miss these precious teachings from a Buddhist master! Topics for the one-day courses include: Integrating Buddhism and everyday life, where mindfulness and meditation fit in, and how to overcome destructive emotions and keep your head in difficult situations. Geshe-la tackles questions such as Do you have to be religious to be a Buddhist? and what does Buddha nature mean, and who has it? With these teachings you will be able to discover how to live true to your values and not be distracted by daily concerns. Led by FPMT touring teacher, Geshe Tenzin Zopa. The teachings are for all levels and highly recommended for beginner s and first-timers to Buddhism! Bookings appreciated for the weekend courses. Suggested donation is $80 per day, but there is no set amount please offer what you are comfortable with. Each course is a stand-alone topic, so come do one day or both days. BYO lunch. 8 IN-DEPTH BUDDHISM Discovering Buddhism UNIT 2: How to Meditate Wednesday evenings 4 October 6 December (7 pm 8.30 pm) What is meditation for? How do I sit comfortably? What practices do I start with? And what can I do about sleepiness and distraction? Learn the purpose of meditation, and the benefits from simple relaxation to taming the mind and ultimately becoming awake, or enlightened. Discover how to set up an effective and enjoyable daily meditation practice to bring ultimate benefit. 10-weeks with registered FPMT teacher Eddie Peet. Join at the beginning of any unit. By donation (suggested $10 but no set amount). Bound notes are $30. If you are unsure if this course will suit you, please feel welcome to sit in on a class. Discovering Buddhism UNIT 6: All About Karma Tuesday mornings 19 September 21 November (10.30 am 12 pm) Karma is the internal functioning of causality. Discover how it manifests in our own mind and influences our experience. If we can understand how karma works we will be able to take control of our own life and make sure we put in place all the causes for happiness, instead of suffering! 10-weeks with registered FPMT teacher Eddie Peet. Join at the beginning of any unit. By donation (suggested $10 but no set amount). Bound notes are $30. If you are unsure if this course will suit you, please feel welcome to sit in on a class. Eddie Peet is a registered teacher within the FPMT and has been leading the intermediate classes at LTC since His gentle manner and in-depth knowledge of the Buddhist path make him an invaluable resource. He is widely read, and is known for his non-judgmental compassion for anyone wishing to apply the teachings into their life. 7

9 IN-DEPTH BUDDHISM Lamrim Chenmo Study Group Sunday mornings 1 & 15 October (9 am 12 pm) In-depth study group exploring Lama Tsong Khapa's Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment. We listen to the commentary during class, discuss the homework, and discover how to integrate the lam-rim wisdom into daily life. On-going class twice a month, led by registered FPMT teacher, Eddie Peet. Suitable for established students or the committed beginner. (Suggested donation $10) Course notes are $40, let us know if you need them printed. COMMUNITY Tsa-tsa Painting Workshop Sunday 15 October (2 pm 4.30 pm) A relaxing afternoon spent painting the small flat-backed statues of the buddhas (tsatsas). This activity helps us to connect with and draw forth the enlightened qualities of the buddhas in our own mind. It also helps to calm the mind and develop concentration. You don t need any artistic skill to enjoy this contemplative activity! By donation (suggested $10, but no set amount). All materials supplied. Bookings appreciated. Joining Langri Tangpa Centre Everyone is welcome to attend classes there is no requirement you become a member. However, if you would like to support your LTC, and enjoy the many benefits that membership brings, there are several options available to you: Single or Family Membership is for one year. Major benefits include library borrowing right, and full access to our online soundfile archive, where you can catch up on weekly classes. You will need to nominate two LTC members to vouch for you. Online Friend Subscription is for six months. You receive a soundfile a day, and access to the entire teaching archive after the first year. 8

10 PUJAS & PRACTICES Medicine Buddha Puja Thursday 5 October (6.30 pm 8 pm) Prayers and offerings to the seven healing Buddhas. This practice helps to remove obstacles, dissolve the root cause of problems, and connect with universal healing energy. Special dedications for the sick, global harmony, and the success of all positive endeavours. Bring your medicines to put on the altar and be blessed. Monthly offering ceremony, and ideal first-time puja as it is in English! No need to be a Buddhist to attend. By donation (suggested $10, or bring an offering of flowers or food) Guru Puja Saturday 14 & Monday 30 October (6.30 pm 8 pm) We offer the puja in English, so we can follow the meaning. We also include chai tea and make individual dedications. Tsog is a special offering to the guru field. It is crucial for creating the merit we need to sustain a fruitful Dharma practice. Ritual offering, especially relevant to those with an HYT practice commitment. Led by senior students. By donation (suggested $10, or bring an offering of flowers or food). Sutra Recitation for Rinpoche Sunday 8 October (2 pm 3.30 pm) Join us in this special recitation recommended by Khandro-la to ensure the health and long life of our precious guru, Lama Zopa Rinpoche. The Diamond Cutter Sutra is short yet profound. It is one of the key practices Rinpoche recommended we do here at LTC. Monthly group recitation, everyone welcome! 11 PUJAS & PRACTICES All-Night Tara Puja Saturday 28 October First session 6.30 pm 8.30 pm Second session 9.15 pm pm Third session am 2.30 am Fourth session 3.00 am 5.30 am This special all-night practice can free one from fear and anxiety, protect from natural disasters, violence and war, and bring peace to difficult relationships. Similar to the usual Tara Puja, but with more prayers, mantras for each of the Taras, prostrations and walking meditation. There is no danger of falling asleep as there is so much to do! Come to just one session, come later in the evening, or stay for the entire event! BYO dinner to share after the first session. Bring your mandala set and ritual items (if you have them). Wear comfortable clothes to sit and prostrate in, and bring warm socks. By donation (suggested $20) You can sponsor a session or the chai tea offering, and make dedications for the group to read at the end of each session.
