2 Ngapali Bay Villas & Spa We are a short 45-minute flight from Yangon and 9 km (6 mile) drive by private transfer from Thandwe Airport to Mya Pyin Village. An alternate route to the resort includes not only a long day s drive on high forested roads of the Arakan Mountains, at 3100 m (10,000 ft) above sea level but, also, an intimate glance into the daily life of isolated villages as well as unexpected encounters with wild elephants in their natural habitat. The resort is a masterpiece of Myanmar art and culture. Decorated by Interior Designer, U Kyaw Sein and designed by British Architect, David Wordsworth, our thatched roof, high-ceiling Villas are crafted with local white marble, teak wood and sandstone from Yesagyo, Pakkoku District in central Myanmar. The walls exhibit one of a kind pieces from the late U Khin Maung Yin, one of the most influential Burmese modern artists, in addition to antique artifacts collected throughout the many regions of Myanmar. We offer a wide range of activities and adventures, including private boat trips to Pearl Island, snorkeling, e-bicycle rentals for exploring nearby villages, excursions to Kin Pun Chone Village where the Elephant camp is located, visits to local art galleries and Thandwe Market or just spend the day sunbathing on your private lounge with beachside service from Tamarind Restaurant. Our Executive Chef will tempt your taste buds with traditional Rakhine fare. The à la carte menu provides seasonal local produce and seafood with a fusion of Myanmar dishes with Western cuisine. Be sure to enjoy our unique wine collection from around the World. In the 7th and 8th Century, the town of Thandwe was once the capital of the ancient Arakan Empire. It also served as a major seaport on the Bay of Bengal, at the mouth of the Sandoway River. After the Anglo-Burmese War in 1826, the region was then ceded to Great Britain. During British colonial rule in the early 20th century, Ngapali, formerly known as Sandoway, was (even then!) a popular resort destination. British-Indian company streamers would bring tourists from Calcutta to Andrew Bay before sailing south to Yangon and beyond. It was on such a trip that the impressionable young poet Rudyard Kipling was inspired to pen Mandalay after falling in love with a Burmese girl at the foot of the pagoda steps in Moulmein. Today, visitors and guests of the Rakhine State mix naturally with the local Myanmar village people. In the evening, you can observe the fishermen pushing out brightly colored, long-pointed boats and setting course towards the breath-taking sunset. We believe the only way to achieve this, is by organizing your excursions directly with local businesses here. We offer a wide range of adventures, including private boat trips, snorkeling, e-bicycle rentals to explore nearby villages, visiting local art galleries, adventures to an elephant camp or an afternoon at Thandwe Market and many more! Enjoy a day trip up the Thandwe River to Ta Lal Nal Elephant Camp, where you will bath, feed and play with a charming (and sometimes naughty) family of elephants. At Thandwe Market, you will observe the local trade, traditional fabric weaving, including a combination of weaving bamboo and thread to make place mats and coasters. Go to Sandaw, Nandaw and Andaw Pagodas, where you will find enshrined relics of Buddha. Hop on an E-Bike Rental, arranged by a local shop up the street and make your way to the Standing Buddha on Ma Day Hill. Don t forget your camera for breathtaking pictures of the bay as well as Jake Taw Fishing Village, where local vendors sell vegetables and freshly caught or sun-dried seafood. Join our very own Captain Jack for an unforgettable Fishing Boat Trip, where you will be able to snorkel with colorful fishes among the coral reefs of Ngapali Bay.
