THAILAND Jane Gray First and foremost, I owe the Naples Council my utmost gratitude for their immense support in my embarking on this wonderful journey that I will never forget. I will carry the lessons I learned and adventures I had with me forever, and for that I offer my never-ending appreciation for all the benefactors in the council. Thank you all so very much, I will now try my best to reflect on my experiences and the impact they have had on me, although nothing beats actually being in Thailand and in the moment. As I begin writing this, I am inevitably flooded with the many memories and emotions that accompany my experience in Thailand, leaving me feeling incredibly nostalgic and dismal that it is over. Time was in a standstill in Thailand, void of any worries or troubles that I had back home in Naples. Because of this, I was able to truly be in the moment, living life to its utmost capacity and taking it all in. Being away from my family and friends for five weeks, while daunting at first, forced me to come out of my shell and make relationships that I know I will have for the rest of my life. I remember the day I left being full of mixed emotions: excitement, anxiety, and everything in between. My mother, grandmother and I headed to Ft. Lauderdale where I was to meet another girl in my group who I would be flying with to Los Angeles. Thankfully, this girl ended up being one of my best friends in the group, and I still keep in contact with her and have plans to visit her in the future. It
couldn t have worked out any better; we clicked almost instantly. After my final goodbyes, we boarded our plane to L.A. where we spent the night and met up with the rest of the group in the morning. That next day we all met at the airport, and I finally got to meet the ten other experimenters and get on our next flight to Beijing. After that twelve- hour flight (which wasn t too bad), we boarded our next plane to Bangkok. By that time we were all completely beat, quickly passing out in our hotel rooms, only to endure yet another flight the next day to Chiang Mai. After what seemed like hundreds of hours of travelling, we finally made it to our humble hostel in Chiang Mai. I spent the first day in Chiang Mai walking around the market (which was right across from the hostel), and later going to a traditional Thai meal, dancers and all. This was our introduction to life in Thailand, and this is where it finally hit me that I was spending the next five weeks in this wonderful country, and I couldn t have been more excited. The remainder of our time in Chiang Mai was devoted to getting to know one another in the group, acclimating to Thai life and customs, and learning as much of the language as possible. Every day was different, however. Some days we would go to language classes, others we would tour temples, shop, learn about Buddhism, and more! One of my favorite things we did was go to a Thai cooking class, located in what must be the most beautiful, organic, and pure place in the entire world. Our teacher grew all of the ingredients himself, and would educate us on all of the health benefits they may offer. I remember leaving that class completely content, stuffed with delicious food and being surrounded by the lush greenery of rural Thailand with the rolling mountains out in the distance, absolutely breathtaking.
One of the last things we did in Chiang Mai was go to a Buddhist meditation retreat, which was something I had really been looking forward to. I really wanted to take back with me to America knowledge of Buddhism, meditation, and enlightenment, for this type of lifestyle was unlike anything I had ever seen in America. Going into this retreat with very little insight as to what meditation is and how it is done, I was surprised with how much difficulty I, and many others faced throughout the experience. Meditation is not easy, and definitely not something I could have mastered overnight. I will never forget the monk chanting Samaa sambuddhassa while we were all supposed to be meditating but all I could focus on was how my foot had fallen asleep. Our next stop was the first homestay, the part of the trip that we had all been most anxious about. Would our families like us? Would we like our families? How are we going to communicate? All of these questions and more began to take over as we headed to the village. Thankfully, most of us had a remarkable time, connecting with our families despite the enormous amount of differences between us. In my family, I had a mother and father who were both in their early twenties and who worked in the rice fields, as well as a grandmother and three year old twin brothers. My mother, being only about four years older than me had a lot on her plate with the twins and working, so I became very close with the grandmother (called may ), who devoted much of her time to caring for me. While in the homestay, we helped build a library for the village, learned a traditional Thai dance, and even spent a day at a waterfall! But the best part of the homestay by far was just being with and
connecting to my family. Leaving the homestay was one of the most emotional parts of the trip, I will never forget my family or the experiences I had there. After the first homestay, we went back to Chiang Mai for a few days. During this time, we rode elephants, went zip lining, toured more temples, and spent the night on a houseboat. The houseboat was on a beautiful lake between some mountains, where we could swim in the warm water and reflect on our experiences so far. That night the group stayed up late talking and eating fresh fried fish. Sleeping however was pretty rough. Four girls sharing a bed on a wooden raft with rats and flies was less than pleasant, but ended up being a great experience for the group dynamics. It was then time to head to our next homestay, the hill tribe. Here, we taught English at the local elementary school, teaching them songs such as head, shoulders, knees, and toes and the hokey pokey. It was great seeing the kids learn and appreciate American culture, and throughout our time in the hill tribe I learned to really appreciate their culture. While most people in Thailand are Buddhist, the majority of people in the hill tribe were animist, worshipping spirits and ancestors. Our group got the chance to see a ritual in which the people would sacrifice a chicken to the spirits, for this was supposed to make the spirits happy and protect the tribe for the upcoming year. This was so fascinating to me. I find it so interesting to see how people live their lives so differently than what is seen in America. Although I may not quite understand it, I appreciate getting the chance to open my mind to what is not familiar to me.
After the hill tribe we only had about one week left in Thailand, a very depressing thought at the time. This last week was spent in Sukothai (the first kingdom of Thailand), Hua Hin (a beach town), and Bangkok. While in Sukothai, we toured the incredible ancient Buddhist ruins. We would spend hours riding bikes through parks and monuments, trying to take in all the beauty surrounding us. Shortly after, we left for Hua Hin. Here, we had the chance to relax on the beach, gazing at the clear blue water and the mountains in the distance. We had a short amount of time here, but it was one of the most stunning places I have ever been. We then left for Bangkok, where almost as soon as we got there, we had dinner in the tallest building in the city. It was a delicious Thai buffet with views of the city surrounding us, one of the more luxurious meals of the trip. The next day was spent touring the well- known sites of Bangkok, such as the palace and the reclining Buddha. Our last night in Thailand was spent on a dinner boat touring Bangkok, complete with Thai dancing and karaoke. Travelling back to America was tough, for we all knew this could be our last time seeing each other and maybe our last time in Thailand. The relationships I made and experiences I had have changed me for the better, and I have made it my mission to see my friends again and travel the world, hopefully visiting Thailand once more. I must say cop-coon-cah (thank you) to the council once again, for without their help this experience never would have happened.
