So, you ve decided to take A.P. European History. Congratulations!! The following is a list of two readings to be done over the summer. You will be tested on the books upon your return in September. Sophie s World by Jostein Gaarder Do the Attached Assignment Packet DUE AUGUST 11th Candide by Voltaire **You must also purchase and review a copy of Cracking the A.P. European History Exam (Be sure to purchase the most recent edition published by the Princeton Review) During the school year we will also be reading selections from Nicolo Machiavell s The Prince and The Communist Manifesto by Marx and Engels -- You may wish to familiarize yourself with these works. In addition to the required reading you may also wish to read some or all of the following selections. This is not an exhaustive list. Students may wish to contact me for other pertinent titles. Weisel, Night The following films provide a painless and enjoyable way to learn about certain periods of western history. They are recommended for all students (please clear all R ratings with your parents). You must watch at least two of them and write two reaction papers. Film Reaction Paper Guidelines - A two page paper (minimum) in which you react or respond to some element(s), theme(s), or detail(s) of the film that you have watched. Your paper must prove to me that you have viewed and seriously thought about the film. Aim to impress the reader. Remember that this is a reaction paper and not a summary. 3 Sophie s World Packet Get a copy of the book and start this assignment early. You should give yourself at least two to three weeks to get through it. Read Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder and answer these questions as you read the book. You do not want to have to go back and read it again just to answer the questions. Bring both your questions and answers to the first day of classes. Impress me with your complete sentences. This will be your first assignment grade. You may find this a bit overwhelming at times but that is to be expected. This should be all your own work. Do your best. C1. 1. Find out how much a Norwegian crown is worth, compared to the US dollar (this is outside research and not in the text). 2. Cite 3 elements (or examples) of a mystery novel in C In ONE sentence each, summarize chapters Who are YOU? C2. 5. What is the origin of philosophy? 6. Also--In the 20th c., philosophers (and society, for that matter) questioned the validity of the "old order"-don't answer these: Did that lead to the chaos and destruction of the 2 world wars?
