6 Whatever I am today it is all because of my hard efforts, diligence and grace of my elders. In life I had faced multitudinous hassles and hindrances but despite of that I never abdicate my goals. There is no shortcut to attain success. For me there were three mantras to reach the sky and attain my goal - 1. Respect your parents and elders 2. Respect your work and remain scrupulous throughout 3. Try to be an altruist So, these are the three mantras I taught to my son and I am glad because he acquiesce me, At the green age of 26, he has already earned name and fame, seeds of maturity and firmness can be seen in him clearly. 10 About The Author ANKIT TYAGI, PhD Scholar, NET-JRF- After completing his Bachelors in English (hons.) from Delhi University. He did his masters in English from Hindu College, Sonepat (MDU). UGC-NET/JRF is considered as one of the toughest exams in India. Mr. Ankit Tyagi had qualified both NET and JRF in first attempt with 80% marks. He is currently working towards the PhD degree in English at SRM University, Sonepat, Haryana under the supervision of Dr. Sushil Kumar Mishra. He is also getting a handsome amount of fellowship from UGC for qualifying JRF (Junior Research Fellowship). He has attended various National and International Conferences and Seminars. He has also published dozens of International Journals. He is very fond of composing poetry by ix

In prehistoric times people used to judge an individual on the basis of his religion. People who belongs to upper castes, they were too harsh and rude towards all those who belongs to lower castes. So, through this play I want to encourage people to abolish caste barriers. Every individual is born equal so, there should be no partiality in the society on the basis of caste, race and xiii

16 A holy untouchable - A play Introduction A holy untouchable is a fictional play. All the characters and events in this play are fictional. Somehow through this play I tried to share my personal views and perspective. In the post independent era Brahmins were exploiting minorities in the name of god and religion. Although I am a Brahmin but yet I have guts to accept the vices and flaws which we Brahmins possess. I also acknowledge the fact that in modern time the situation is somehow reversed. Now a day s minority groups are getting adequate reservations and subsidies but yet they are not contented.the whole play is a sarcastic remark on all those who discriminate on the basis of caste and gender. The play reveals the plight of minorities during the post independent era. The crux of this play is to make people aware that education is the only medium to uplift in this unjust society. Throughout this play my intentions were to satirize vices of men. ~ 1 ~

17 Ankit Tyagi Men is micro but his proud is macro. Through this play I want ardent amendments and refinement in the psyche of men. In case if any character, event or situation hurt your sentiments or feelings.then I deeply apologies from the core of my heart. My intentions are very clear.through this play I want to expose the vices and flaws of all such people who misuse their power for their personal benefits. I foresee that my readers will enjoy this play and took it as a parable and as a consequence they ll try to amend their flaws. I foresee that this play will work AS AN EYEOPENER FOR ALL SUCH SUPERCILIOUS AND EGOIST PEOPLE WHO EXPLOIT MINORITIES ON THE BASIS OF CASTEISM. l Ankit tyagi ~ 2 ~

19 Ankit Tyagi Setting {Satyawan s house} [Satyawan enters, while lighting a tobacco pipe] Veena. Where were you? Satyawan. I went to Sarpanchji s house for sweeping his courtyard. Veena. Okay, but does he allow you to enter his mansion? [Satyawan smiles slightly, shakes his head and in low tone says, isn t it enough that an untouchable entered a Brahmin s courtyard] Veena. [Trying to change the subject] you know today I made onion chutney [sauce]for you. Satyawan.[smiles] so, bring it fast I am hungry [Veena exits towards kitchen] [The stage darkens, when the light comes up again, it is morning] ~ 4 ~

20 A holy untouchable - A play [Scene set at Jai Bhagwan s mansion] Kamlesh. Why you allow that chuhra to enter our courtyard? He profaned it, now I need to sprinkle Ganga jal all around. Jai Bhagwan. I told that bloody bastard to sweep minutely, but still he left the trash on the floor. [Kamlesh curses him in a filthy tone and says, don t allow that manhus to enter again] Kamlesh. Sprinkles Ganga Jal Jai Bhagwan. Give me the bowl of Ganga Jal, I will sprinkle it. You just go in and bring my cigar and madira. Kamlesh. Okay, but sprinkle it everywhere. Jai Bhagwan. Okay, I will. [Kamlesh exits] [Stage darkens] ~ 5 ~

21 Ankit Tyagi [Light comes up again, scene set at Satyawan s house] {It is evening. Karuna, Satyawan s daughter sitting up in a broken cot and reading book in the hazy light of Earthen Lamp} [Enters veena] with a cup of tea Veena. How is your preparation for tomorrow s exam? Karuna. It is good maa, but you never know what they may ask in exam. So, I am revising everything very minutely. Veena. Okay, beta carry on, but firstly have some tea. [Enters Satyawan] {Karuna quickly stands and keeps her book aside and touches satyawan s feet} Karuna. Namaste Baba Satyawan. Namaste Beta ~ 6 ~

22 A holy untouchable - A play {karuna ran towards kitchen and brings a glass of water for satyawan and serves him } Satyawan.[while holding glass in his hand] taiyari kaisi hai beta. Karuna. Aachi hai Baba. Satyawan. So, what have you decided? Soon you will complete your education. Veena [interrupts] what she will decide? Now it s our responsibility to find a suitable match for our princess. Karuna [Reluctantly] Maa please, I am just 15 and secondly I want to study further. It is just a beginning for me. I want to attain success in my life, and for that I need to study further. Satyawan. What do you mean? We can t afford more than this beta. Veena. You know it very well neither we are financially sound nor Sarpanchji will allow you to enter higher school. It is meant for Brahmin s not for Dalits like us. ~ 7 ~

23 Ankit Tyagi Satyawan. Don t you know how I begged for your admission in this school. This time surely sarpanchji and other Brahmin s will throw us out of this hamlet. Karuna. What is our fault Baba, if we are Dalits? Why everyone in this village call us manhus? Satyawan.[In mournful tone] because we are not born to live rather we are born to serve others. Veena. [With moist eyes] Beta we cannot challenge fate. Karuna. [In polite and consoling tone] Maa, Baba we are also human beings like them. Who are they to decide our fate? Who created these caste barriers, God or men? If we don t raise our voice against their unjust policies then they will keep on tormenting us eternally. Education is the only medium to uplift in the society and to attain rights. ~ 8 ~

24 A holy untouchable - A play Satyawan. Whatever you are saying is absolutely right beta. But we can t win this battle against this unjust society single handedly. Karuna. I don t know Baba. But do you want that I should abdicate my aspirations and dreams only because of this unjust society. [Karuna ran towards Veena] Karuna. You tell Maa, you and Baba did countless sacrifices for providing me this valuable education. And now when I am trying to stand on my feet you want me to quit everything. I don t like the way when people mocks at my Maa and Baba. They glare us as if we are criminals. They taunt us unnecessarily. They abuse us without any fault. Why they show us their aggression? Why there is partiality? Why they possess such low mentality. {karuna broke into tears} ~ 9 ~
