4 Upcoming Event Upcoming Event Psyche and the Sacred: A Depth Psychological Approach to Spirituality Lionel Corbett, M.D. Presented by The C.G. Jung Institute of Los Angeles and The University of Philosophical Research When our spirituality cannot be contained within traditional institutions, there is an urgent need for new ways to articulate our experience of the sacred. From within the depth of the psyche, a new image of the divine is emerging alongside traditional Judeo-Christian images. Depth psychology gives us a language to articulate this emergence, allowing our experience of the sacred to be articulated without the need for recourse to traditional theology, doctrine or dogma. This workshop, which is based on Jung s religious writing, describes an approach to spirituality based on personal experience of the sacred. These numinous experiences are forms of continuous revelation that arise from transpersonal levels of the psyche. They may take completely novel symbolic forms, and rather than being collective they are often uniquely tailored to the psychology of the individual. Dr. Corbett will illustrate the ways in which these experiences may appear in dreams, in relationships, in visions, through the body, the natural world, and by means of our emotional difficulties. Define authentic spirituality using a depth psychological approach Describe the history of numinosum Identify examples of the numinous in dreams, visions, psychopathology, the body and the natural world Lionel Corbett, M.D., trained in medicine and psychiatry in England and as a Jungian analyst at the C. G. Jung Institute of Chicago. Dr. Corbett is a faculty member at the University of Philosophical Research. His primary dedication is to the religious function of the psyche, especially the way in which personal religious experience is relevant to individual psychology. He is the author of Psyche and the Sacred, (Routledge, 1966) and The Religious Function of the Psyche (Spring publications, 2007). He is co-editor, with Dennis Patrick Slattery, of Depth Psychology: Meditations in the Field and Psychology at the Threshold. He has also authored Spirituality Beyond Religion, a set of audiotapes published by Sounds True. 5 Pre-registered: $160 Series: Religious Nature of the Psyche Myth, Ritual, Symbol and Meaning Individual lectures are available as listed Jung informs us that symbols of religious traditions and their corresponding rituals possess deep psychological meaning. These symbols and the myths in which they are embedded stand in a relationship of living reciprocity to the psyche The archetypal motifs arise as individual products of unconscious origin; their universal nature allows them to be refined into religious contents that live in people s hearts and inform the meaning of their lives over centuries. We can study the continuing evolution of the religious instinct through the observation of contemporary dreams and other numinous manifestations of the unconscious. This series explores these symbols and their meaning as they occur in historical religious traditions and as they continue to evolve in individual consciousness. Ancient Greece: WOMEN ON THE ROAD TO ELEUSIS 1/7 Janis Jennings, Ph.D. In antiquity, the Eleusinian mysteries enacted the experience of Demeter as she grieved the loss, and the eventual return of her daughter. The myth of Demeter and Persephone offers unique insights about the contemporary relationship between mothers and daughters, and how this relationship can begin to be healed. Our discussion will focus on one facet of the rites of Eleusis, the feeling-toned core of the mother-daughter dyad. Wednesday, September 23; Identify ways in which historical injuries to the mother-daughter dyad live in the contemporary psyche Describe the intra-psychic and archetypal aspects of the mother-daughter bond List implications for treating difficulties in the mother-daughter relationship All levels 2 hours CE, CN available APA, MCEP: see p. 23 Series: Religious Nature of the Psyche Fall Library Booksale! 6 Series: Religious Nature of the Psyche Series: Religious Nature of the Psyche Christianity: SYMBOLISM OF THE MASS 2/7 Father William Axe Wednesday, October 7; "I will take up the cup of salvation..." or is it "the cup of tears?" In his "Symbolism of the Mass," written in the mid-1940's, Jung suggested that the symbols within the Mass have their origins deep in human history and human consciousness, first touched by shamans only, and later, gradually opened to a wider consciousness. He saw alchemical processes reflected in the progression of the ritual, itself, assigning alchemical significance to each part. Jung was aware of traditional theological teaching, and sought to pair theological insights and dogmatic teachings with the outcome of the shamanic/alchemical oeuvre he saw taking place in his patients or in his work. Since Jung's treatment of this topic, major changes have taken place within Catholicism, changes that have brought some insights to greater consciousness, and changes that have buried others. Identify symbols of the Mass Define connection between human consciousness and the ritual of Mass Identify connections between Jung, alchemy and the Catholic Mass All levels 2 hours CE, CN available APA, MCEP: see p. 23 Judaism: The Mosaic Within 3/7 Susan Vorhand, Ph.D. Jung, Alchemy and Jewish Mysticism 6 Wednesday, October 14; Resonating concepts exist between Jung's interpretation of Alchemy and that of Jewish Mysticism. This presentation will discuss these parallels within Alchemy, Kaballah and Jungian psychology and their perspectives on paths to reparation and individuation. Rather than consider suffering, brokenness and struggle as detrimental, this presentation demonstrates how these are part of the journey towards individuation and transformation. Describe the relationship between Jungian Psychology, Alchemy and Jewish Mysticism Discuss how each is a path towards self-transformation Identify the mosaic within as it relates to the process of individuation All levels 2 hours CE, CN available APA, MCEP: see p. 23

7 Series: Religious Nature of the Psyche Buddhism: THE WISDOM OF UNCERTAINTY 4/7 Michael Gellert, M.A., L.C.S.W. Jung, Buddhism, and Psychotherapy No one goes so far as the person who does not know where he is going. C.G. Jung This talk will explore the psychological and spiritual value of embracing uncertainty. We will examine the role of doubt in Jung s personal journey and in Buddhism as a way to foster our own ability to entertain uncertainty with a playful yet religious attitude. We will also discuss some case illustrations that show how wisdom can be hidden in both the patient s and therapist s uncertainty. Wednesday, October 28; Describe such Zen practices as cultivating the Great Doubt and don t know-mind Describe Jung s own relationship with Buddhism as a movement from uncertainty to deep appreciation Identify the powerful role of uncertainty in individuation Series: Religious Nature of the Psyche All levels 2 hours CE, CN available APA, MCEP: see p. 23 Gnosticism: MARY MAGDALENE 5/7 Steve Galipeau, M.A., M.Div.. The Missing Feminine Wednesday, November 4; The success of The DaVinci Code affirms an unconscious yearning in our culture for the long forgotten sacred feminine. We will discuss the success of Dan Brown s novel in the light of Jung s psychology and in particular his own discovery of the lost feminine. Special attention will be paid to the Gnostic Gospel of Mary Magdalene and how its discovery reflects the internal process of rediscovering the neglected feminine in the souls of women and men today. Discuss the psychological fascination of The DaVinci Code from the perspective of analytical psychology Discuss the history and nature of the Gnostic Gospel of Mary Magdalene Describe the personal psychological process of self discovery as reflected in this modern novel and ancient Gnostic text All levels 2 hours CE, CN available APA, MCEP: see p. 23 7

8 Series: Religious Nature of the Psyche Series: Religious Nature of the Psyche Hinduism: PATH TO THE SOUL 6/7 Ashok Bedi, M.D. Friday, November 13; A Jungian rendering of the Hindu Path to Healing, Health and Wholeness By decoding incarnate symbols in our life, this lecture will integrate Hindu and Jungian perspectives to establish a path to the soul. These symbols manifest as dreams, fantasies, complexes, synchronistic events, accidents, relationship tangles, creative outputs, and medical and psychiatric symptoms. These symbols have the potential to renew and rekindle the vitality and purposefulness of our life. Specifically, we will explore the myth of the god Ganesha - an archetype for Removal of Obstacles and Auspicious New Beginnings. Describe the basic tenants of the Hindu path to the soul Describe the concepts of Maya, Karma and Dharma Identify the fundamentals of Yoga from an analytical perspective of Ganesha as an archetype of auspicious new beginnings All levels 2 hours CE, CN available APA, MCEP: see p. 23 Jung s Psychology: NATURAL SYMBOLS OF SELF 7/7 Michele Daniel, Ph.D. Wednesday, November 18; In the Terry Lectures, Jung describes how natural symbols of the Self arise spontaneously from the Collective Unconscious and how many of these archetypal images have been codified into creeds and religious dogmas that have retained their numinal power over centuries. However, natural symbols also continue to arise through individual dreams and imaginal experiences, leading to an ongoing renewal of the connection to the Self. This lecture will explore this notion of natural symbols; consideration will be given to the image of the mandala to show how these images of the Objective Psyche continue to evolve in contemporary times. List examples of natural symbols of the Self Describe how natural symbols arise Contrast images of mandalas as they have appeared historically and spontaneously in contemporary dreams and imaginal experiences All levels 2 hours CE, CN available APA, MCEP: see p. 23 8

15 Individual Lectures and Workshops THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS: GLUTTONY John Dobbs, Ph.D. Wednesday, December 2; From the ancient tale of Erisichthon, whose impiety was punished with insatiable hunger, to The Biggest Loser, TV s ironically-named salute to the reformed obese, we find ourselves fascinated, enthralled, appalled or amused by Gluttony. Though we may tend to associate Gluttony with obesity, it also incorporates many of what are considered to be today s dietetic virtues, such as fastidiousness. This talk, coming between Thanksgiving and Christmas, will address psychological aspects of the omnivore s dilemma of sustenance, self-care and the call from that quart of Rocky Road in the freezer. (Included will be a recipe for the World s Best chocolate chip cookies.) 16 Individual Lectures and Workshops THE ERA OF THE GODDESS: FROM WOMB TO TOMB Elise Collins-Shields, Ph.D. Saturday, December 12; 10:00am-1:30pm Michele Daniel, Ph.D. Julie Sgarzi, Ph.D. Presented in Collaboration with OPUS Archives and Research Center Lectures and Workshops Artifacts discovered in old Europe during prehistoric times indicate that religious life was centered around the Goddess. From the upper Paleolithic into the Neolithic period, these images of the goddess suggest that her functions and aspects focused on the generation and nourishment of life, destruction and death, and regeneration. OPUS Archives and Research Center will bring materials from the Marija Gimbutas Collection demonstrating these functions and aspects of the Goddess. Elise will review the story of Marija Gimbutas the person and present an overview of the amazing breadth of her work and contributions, Michele will present a consideration of the archetypal patterns that are manifested in these early material artifacts. Julie will conclude with reflections upon the cultural aspects of the matriarchal and goddess mythology and the significance of the goddess sculptures that have been recently unearthed. OPUS Archives and Research Center is an active site for wonder and participation in the great questions of our time. Located on the campus of Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, California, OPUS is a dynamic center for the advancement in the fields of depth psychology, mythology and the humanities, and their place on the world platform especially as they inform the areas of social justice and environmental sustainability. 18 The Analytical Psychology Club The Analytical Psychology Club provides a forum for members to socialize and to share experiences as Jungians. It is dedicated to expanding understanding and consciousness of Jungian thought. APC lectures are open to the general public. Continuing education units are not available for APC presentations Analytical Psychology Club THE ARCHETYPE OF THE MOTHER J. Gordon Nelson, Ph.D. Friday, October 2; Between Medea and the Virgin Mary -A personal journey When Jung explored the course of the hero, he inevitably became mired in the discussion of the mother. Here he discovered the reality of the archetypes, the images in the collective unconscious that eternally mesmerize us, energize us, and attract us. And if we are not careful, these same archetypal images may wind up owning us and destroying us, as Medea did to her own children. Or conversely, that mother may give birth to something so beatific, so wonderful that we call it God. Between these two poles lies the human experience of what individually mothers us, and the almost miraculous result of human consciousness, the living anima, the soul. Yet, free will is never complete, and in Jung s terms the claims of the injured archetype must be met." Thus, the cycle begins anew, this time with consciousness of the personal mother as an archetype. This process becomes analysis and individuation: a new energy we must carry. THE FEMININE: A RETROSPECTIVE Elisabeth Strahan, M.A. Friday, October 9; In the early 1900 s, Jung brought forth the idea of the feminine principle as an archetypal reality in the lives of women and men. After forty or so years exploring this archetype, Strahan will look both backwards and forward at the development of the feminine principles personally and culturally. What are essential feminine values? How do women and men embody these values? 18

19 The Analytical Psychology Club Styles of Feminine Entrapment in Fairytales Katharine Bainbridge, M.A. THE PLAIN OF SILVER Joe McNair, Ph.D. The Source of Imagination in Celtic Mythology Friday, October 16; For thousands of years women have been disempowered by a separation from their own deepest nature and values. This separation/alienation makes women vulnerable to serious disturbances within the psyche, including eating disorders, anxiety, depression and self hatred. This talk will explore some of the troubling energies contributing to these problems as they are depicted in fairy tales a direct window into the collective unconscious. Friday, November 6; The Plain of Silver leads us to a place of enchantment, magic, and vision. It is the place we enter naturally at twilight, when the worlds mesh and meld at the between light. This is the Plain that restores us to Memory. The task of the Celtic poet is to use his or her skill to bring the soul to the point of vision, rest and stillness. The music of this healing skill is realized in the three strains: the Laughter Strain, which raises spirits; the Sorrow Strain, which releases tears; and the Sleep Strain, which brings rest to troubled souls. We will have a look at the difference between a folktale and a fairytale and how one can see them manifest in analytical work. Prerequisites: Humor and Imagination. Power Point Images provided. I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE Sharon Heath, M.A. Gossip, Envy, Secrecy, and Belonging We humans have been gossiping about each other since the beginning of time. Though we tend to associate gossip with superficiality and ugly excesses of pop culture, it is rooted in vital, archetypal feminine energies of relationship and birth. With the help of music, artistic imagery, and personal story, we will trace the dark branches of the grapevine back to their source: the flawed and tender numinosity of the revealed soul. 22 Website ANNOUNCING OUR NEW WEBSITE! We are pleased to announce the arrival of our new website, which will be ready to be explored online in September. After two years of hard work we have created a multi-layered, user friendly, aesthetically beautiful website for your use. Each section, defined by the menu headings, has a different mandala along with pictures from the ARAS archive framing each page to keep you oriented. The menu bar at the top remains in place to help guide you through the site as you move from page to page so you never lose your way. On our Home page we present our new mission statement and have an overview of some of our current offerings. From there we move to the next menu heading, The Institute, which includes a history of our Institute, a list of the names and photos of all past presidents, a biography of C. G Jung, and a description of analytical psychology. Here we have our Support the Institute page with information on why we need your continuing support to offer all that we do, including this new website. The last page under The Institute heading gives our contact information with photos of all the hard working and helpful employees you will meet when you visit the Institute. Public Programs has its own menu with pages that allow you to browse our current or past class schedules, our series, APC and special events. Lecture content can be explored in detail and now you can register online as well as download our brochure. Our online Bookstore offers books and DVDs for sale along with reviews and recommendations. Come wander through and make you purchases online. Or, if you are interested in our Clinics and Analysts, move to the next heading in our menu bar and learn about our adult and child clinics or find a listing of our analysts and candidates by area. Education is the next heading reflecting a large part of our mission. On these pages we have information for the Analyst Training Program, Field Placement/ Internships, Continuing Education, Analytical Psychology, and Sandplay Courses. Following this, under the heading Word and Image, are pages for ARAS (Archive for Research in Archetypal Symbolism), the Film Archive Project, Max and Lore Zeller Library, and Psychological Perspectives. Friends is the next heading and includes pages for the APC (Analytical Psychology Club), links to other sites, and news and events. We are currently announcing the publication of Jung s Red Book, which is available for purchase in the Bookstore. The last two menu headings are Sign Up and Login. Happy browsing and if you have a comment or run into a bug, please let us know by contacting our Executive Director, Christophe Le Mouël. 22
