DIONYSOS: PAST AND PRESENT Daniel Anderson, J.D. Saturday, June 12 10:00am-2:00pm Dionysos, the Greek god of wine, ecstasy, license, and theater has long captivated the Western imagination. From romantic artistic portrayals of Dionysos as the jolly god of wine and pleasure, to his destructive appeal for Nietzsche, to his invocation in the 1960s counter-cultural revolution, Dionysos has survived on the margins of a society dominated by Christian values. This lecture will explore the historical and psychological aspects of this archetypal figure and his relevance to contemporary life. Describe the role of Dionysos from an historical perspective Describe the archetypal aspect of Dionysos Give an example of how this archetype functions in contemporary life Pre-registered: $50 At Door: $55 All levels 4 hours CE, CN available APA, MCEP: see p. 19 Registration for all public programs may be completed via phone, ( ), or by going online to 4

AVATAR: THE JOURNEY ON PANDORA Steven Galipeau, M.A., M.Div. Wednesday, June 16 7:30-9:30pm Jung wrote, "The most we can do is to dream the myth onward and give it a modern dress." In our culture, certain evocative films often serve this function. Using the film Avatar, with references also found in other earlier films, we will descend into the dreamlike quality of the planet Pandora in order to investigate key psychological dilemmas posed by an encounter with the unconscious. We will focus on the role of the anima, and the ways in which the call to individuation can bring a person to a more complete psychological state, one that challenges us to fully navigate the "compass" of the soul. Discuss the role of film as a medium for experiencing the unconscious Compare themes that appear in Avatar with similar ones in earlier films Describe the symbolism of the film in terms of Jung s concept of individuation Pre-registered: $25 At Door: $30 All levels 2 hours CE, CN available APA, MCEP: see p. 19 THE MOTE IN YOUR EYE: IN PRAISE OF PROJECTION Robin Robertson, Ph.D. Saturday, June 19 10:00am-1:00pm For Jung, projection was not seen only as a defense mechanism, but also as a tool which can lead to greater consciousness. The evolutionary aspect of projection as evidenced in animal behavior, suggests new ways of understanding the adaptive nature of projection. Drawing from contemporary theories of the mind, we will examine some of the ways in which projection serves as an integrating aspect of the personality. Describe how projection operates as a normal method of engagement with the world Describe how animals project instinctual behaviors to accomplish a variety of complex tasks Compare current models of the brain/mind relationship with Jung's model of the archetypes Pre-registered: $45 At Door: $50 All levels 3 hours CE, CN available APA, MCEP: see p. 19 5

SURVIVING A CRISIS OF FAITH Stephen Kenneally, M.B.A., M.A. Wednesday, June 23 7:30-9:30pm When life presents us with difficult experiences that challenge our fundamental view of the world and our place in it, our broader belief in the redemptive promise of life can become threatened. As previously held beliefs begin to erode or crumble, a sense of despair and cynicism may initiate a crisis of faith. Drawing on psychological, historical, mythological, and religious material, we will address the process of grieving the loss of meaning in our lives, and the anguish and disorientation which can ultimately lead us towards a renewed commitment to life. Describe what is meant by a crisis of faith Using historical, religious, or mythological material, give an example of grieving the loss of meaning in one's life Describe how the process of mourning can help an individual re-engage with life Pre-registered: $25 At Door: $30 All levels 2 hours CE, CN available APA, MCEP: see p. 19 THE BEHOLD: FLOWERS IN MYTH AND CONSCIOUSNESS Rosalind Wholden Saturday, July 10 10:00am-1:00pm Being called to the sacred by seeing is called 'Darshan' in Hindu religious practice. This witnessing of the ineffable is evident both in the mystery of Eleusis, as well as in the Budda's "Flower Sermon". In this lecture, we will use slides to focus on the symbolic, cultural, and individual aspects of flowers, and their role as a metaphor for psychological transformation. Participants are encouraged to bring flowers to the presentation. Describe the flower as a symbol of death and rebirth using an example from mythology Give an example of the flower motif as a metaphor for psychological change Give an example from a dream or fairy tale in which the flower symbolizes transformation Pre-registered: $45 At Door: $50 All levels 3 hours CE, CN available APA, MCEP: see p. 19 6

THE CONFERENCE OF THE BIRDS AND THE PATH TO INDIVIDUATION Sherri Mahdavi, Ph.D. Wednesday, July 14 7:30-9:30pm The legendary Sufi poet Farid al-din Attar is one of the most ancient poets of Persia. His poetry inspired numerous mystic poets including Rumi. In The Conference of the Birds, (Mantiq u-tayr), Attar tell us the story of a group of birds who desire to know the king of all birds, the great Simorgh, the mysterious bird in Persian mythology. Their quest takes them through seven valleys as they experience longing, suffering, and gradual awareness of the Divine Mystery, God's presence within man. Describe the archetypal themes in the poem The Conference of the Birds Give an example of how this poem is relevant to contemporary life Describe how a desire for a connection to the Divine is necessary for psychological growth Pre-registered: $25 At Door: $30 All levels 2 hours CE, CN available APA, MCEP: see p. 19 THE HURT LOCKER: THE HERO S WOUNDS Arlene TePaske Landau, Ph.D. Friday, July 23 7:30-9:30pm At the beginning of The Hurt Locker, Chris Hedges quote War is a drug suggests the autonomous cellular charge of combat. Director Kathryn Bigelow's film is a story which describes Iraq as an utterly dissimilar universe, harsh, brittle and horrible, in which everything and everyone is a probable adversary. Even the ground beneath one s feet can burst and gulp one up. This lecture will consider the symbolic and psychological meaning of the film, focusing on the archetype of the hero. Describe the autonomous nature of war and combat Illustrate the psychological aspect of fighting the unknown and unpredictable Describe the symbolic aspect of the archetype of the hero as exemplified in the film Pre-registered: $25 At Door: $30 All levels 2 hours CE, CN available APA, MCEP: see p. 19 7

COLLAGE AS DOORWAY TO THE SELF Janie Ingalls, M.F.T. Saturday, July 31 10:00am-2:00pm As a process which utilizes drawing, writing or sandplay to symbolically engage the unconscious, active imagination can be both fascinating as well as intimidating. Collage, in which an individual chooses images and then organizes and pastes them together to form a picture, is also guided by the Self and is only completed when the conscious ego consents to bring all of the images together. In this workshop we will explore the medium of collage as a way to connect to the unconscious. Participants will have the opportunity to create their own collages in a quiet meditative space with time at the end for sharing feelings and insights with the group. Describe Jung's concept of active imagination Describe how collage can be a form of active imagination Describe the role of the Self in organizing unconscious experience Pre-registered: $50 At Door: $55 All levels 4 hours CE, CN available APA, MCEP: see p. 19 EXPLORING THE MUSICAL UNCONSCIOUS Rich Ryan, Ph.D. Wednesday, August 4 7:30-9:30pm Both Freud and Jung found music to be emotionally confusing, and neither ever explored music as a pathway to the deep unconscious. However, late in life Jung met a music therapist who demonstrated her work with patients by playing for and with Jung. He became very excited, stating, "This opens up whole new avenues of research I'd never dreamed of.this reaches the deep archetypal material that we can only sometimes reach in our analytical work with patients. This is most remarkable." Since then, much research has been done on the psychological aspects of music and its use in healing. Attendees will have the opportunity to access and engage the musical unconscious. Describe what is meant by the concept of the musical unconscious Identify the healing potential in music and demonstrate an example of accessing the musical unconscious Demonstrate the connection between music as archetype and as instinct Pre-registered: $25 At Door: $30 All levels 2 hours CE, CN available APA, MCEP: see p. 19 8

A Series: ON FAIRY TALES Mandana S. Chambers, Esq. Series: Pre-registered: $60 Individual Classes: Friday: Pre-registered: $25 / At door: $30 Saturday: Pre-registration required: $45 Enrollment for Saturday is limited All levels 5 hours CE, CN available / 1 per class hour APA, MCEP: See note on p. 19 THEORY Friday, August 6 7:30-9:30pm Marie-Louise von Franz, the Swiss Jungian analyst and close collaborator with Jung, believed that fairy tales are collective dreams and the purest and simplest expression of the collective unconscious. They represent the natural wisdom of the ancients and, like dreams, utilize a symbolic language to connect us to the transpersonal or archetypal dimension of the psyche. Jung believed that a familiarity with myths, fairy tales and folk legends is crucial for analytic work as a means of developing a deeper relationship with the unconscious. Describe what is meant by the archetypal or transpersonal dimension of the psyche Give an example of how a fairy tale can represent an unconscious process Give an example of a how a fairy tale utilizes symbolic language PRACTICE Saturday, August 7 10:00am-1:00pm In this seminar, we will explore some of the basic structures which underlie many fairy tales and will trace them to the archetypal dimension of the collective unconscious. Using the method of amplification developed by Jung and von Franz, we will work together to interpret the deeper meaning of a fairy tale. Enrollment will be limited to twenty-five participants to facilitate an understanding of this method s application. Describe some common themes which underlie many fairy tales Describe how to apply the technique of amplification to fairy tales Give an example of how this theory of amplification can lead to an integration of the personality 10

FOUR, PART IV: A REFLECTION ON THE WHOLENESS OF NATURE Christophe Le Mouël, Ph.D. Wednesday, August 11 7:30-9:30pm Drawing from Jungian psychology and quantum physics, we will complete our reflection on the wholeness of nature by presenting a model which articulates both psyche and matter. Following the motif of the Four in dreams, we will focus on the ways in which this symbol expresses both a containing quality as well as what von Franz referred to as the "total reality." A brief review of Parts 1, 2, and 3 will be included at the beginning of the lecture. Describe a model of wholeness based on Jung's concept of Unus Mundus Describe how the symbol of the Four can manifest in one's personal life Give an example of the symbol of the Four as it appears in nature or the collective unconscious Pre-registered: $25 At Door: $30 All levels 2 hours CE, CN available APA, MCEP: see p. 19 Psychological Perspectives Psychological Perspectives is a unique journal with a strong foundation in the arts, whose mission is to promote greater consciousness by honoring and amplifying the psychology of C.G. Jung. Psychological Perspectives offers a broad view and publishes a wide range of articles, from depth psychology to science, politics to philosophy, as well as fiction, poetry, and current book, video, and film reviews. Each issue is a feast not only for the mind but for the eye as well, filled with art that flows from the cover through the articles. 11

The Analytical Psychology Club THE SISTER FROM BELOW Naomi Ruth Lowinsky, Ph.D. Friday, June 25 7:30-9:30pm Who is the Sister from Below? She s certainly not about the ordinary business of life: work, shopping, making dinner. She speaks from the other realms, and if you will allow Her to, She might whisper in your ear, lead you astray, or fill you with strange yearnings. She s a siren, a seductress, a shape-shifter. Why listen to such a troublemaker? Because She is essential to the creative process: She holds the keys to the doors of our imaginations and deeper life the evolution of Soul. In this lecture, Naomi Ruth Lowinsky will present material from her new memoir: The Sister from Below: When the Muse Gets Her Way. Pre-registered: $25 At Door: $30 Two Perspectives on the Puer A Series MICHAEL JACKSON: PUER IN THE MIRROR Chris Miller, M.A. Friday, July 9 7:30-9:30pm At a public memorial for Michael Jackson, actress Brooke Shields paid homage to her friend by quoting from Antoine de Saint-Exupery s The Little Prince. Perhaps unbeknownst to Shields, this text provided the model of the boy who never matures into manhood in Marie-Louise von Franz s classic work on the subject, The Problem of the Puer Aeternus. This talk will blend song and spoken word to show how, as the boy-man musician from Neverland Ranch, Jackson embodied both positive and negative aspects of the puer aeternus as well as healthy and unhealthy energies found in the puer s eternal counterpart, the senex. Pre-registered: $25 At Door: $30 12

PROBLEMATIC PUERS AND THEIR WENDYS Jon-Patrik Pedersen, Ph.D. Friday, July 16 7:30-9:30pm The puer aeternus (eternal boy) archetype manifests both positively and negatively. We will focus primarily on the problem of the puer, as Marie- Louise von Franz has put it the difficulty men can have in moving into mature adulthood. Using film clips and music, we will explore some common puer personalities (the Charming Puer, the Nature Puer, the Spiritual Puer, the Malignant Puer) and how they are experienced in relationships. We will also address the problem of the Wendys, i.e., women or partners who, hoping for true intimacy and commitment, work hard to take care of their Peter Pan-like puers, only to end up unfulfilled. Pre-registered: $25 At Door: $30 THE WRITING PROCESS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF ANAЇS NIN Nan Hunt, M.A. Saturday, July 24 10:00am-2:00pm Anaїs Nin, whose respect for analytical psychology and struggle for acceptance by the literary world had a profound influence on non-fiction and experimental fiction, continues to influence writers today. In this workshop, designed to help you enhance your own writing process, we will focus on the appeal of the frank, intimate, and lyrical attitudes of Nin's prose, especially her portraits of people. Through discussion, workshop writing, and feedback, each person will have the opportunity to develop his or her own voice. Please bring writing materials. We will have a working lunch, so it is best to bring a sack lunch; snacks, fruit and drinks will be provided. Pre-registered: $55 At Door: $60 SHELLEY S SIBLIOGRAPHY: RELEASING THE INCARCERATED VOICE THROUGH MEMORY, IMAGINATION, AND DIALOGUE Rochelle Duffy, Ph.D. Friday, July 30 7:30-9:30pm This reading performance is the product of Dr. Duffy's work in family mythology and self-discovery. Beginning with the question "What was it like for you to be part of our family?", she collected oral histories from her seventeen siblings and turned them into first person narratives. These memories are stitched into a dialogue between one incarcerated brother and a silenced sister. Dr. Duffy's work demonstrates both the power of memory and dream to ignite voice and transform spirit, as expressed in her reading performance of "Prison Is Where I Learned to Fly: Shelley's Sibliography." Pre-registered: $25 At Door: $30 13
