Last three classes of the workshop on dreams in San Luis Obispo THE WAY OF THE DREAM John Dobbs, Ph.D. Saturdays, January 12, February 9, March 9 9:30-11:30am Dreams reveal a profound relationship between our inner and outer states of being, giving unique insights into the depths of the human mind. The late Dr. Marie-Louise von Franz, Jung s intellectual heir, was perhaps the foremost expert on the explication of dream states, and her timeless comments continue to stir and transform those who study them. Each two-hour session of this course will feature two excerpts from her film series The Way of the Dream, followed by discussion and enhancement of topics raised in the excerpts. Enrollment limited Location: 200 Suburban Road, San Luis Obispo, CA Pre-registered / At Door: $25 CEUs: 6 hours APA, CE, CN available, 2 per class DANCING WITH WOLVES Steven Galipeau, M.A., M.Div. Saturday, February 2 10:00am-1:00pm No animal reflects our conflict with our own unconscious internal world and our disavowal of our own shadow more profoundly than the wolf. Wolves have borne the burden of an intense hatred and misunderstanding that has brought their population to near extinction. In this presentation we will review our history with the wolf, our psychological relationship to this noble creature of the wild, and examine several wolf dreams (including one reported by Jung and one by Freud) to help us differentiate aspects of our inner wolf from the wolf that lives in the wild and our projections onto it. Pre-registered: $40 / At Door: $45 CEUs: 3 hours APA, CE, CN available A DAY OF COLLAGE TO SUPPORT THE PROCESS OF MOURNING Janie Ingalls, M.F.T., Saturday, February 23 10:00am-3:00pm Grief opens the archetypal threshold between earth and heaven, the conscious and the unconscious, life and death. Our bearings are lost and we may experience a sense of fragmentation. As a form of active imagination, done in a safe and protected space, collage can mirror our grief and provide us the means to connect to thetransformative powers of the Self. Please bring your lunch. Pre-registered: $55 / At Door: $60 CEUs: 4 hours APA, CE, CN available LEVELS OF THE PSYCHE J. Marvin Spiegelman, Ph.D Saturday, March 2 10:00am-1:00pm Jung gave us a seed for a social psychology of the psyche, in addition to the familiar picture of the inner world of the personal and collective unconscious. Using a diagram which Jung developed in the 30s, we will explore the social nature of the unconscious, including areas such as gender, neighborhood, and nation. By comparing individuals as well as nations, we will examine the psychological aspects of social conflict and suggest some ways towards resolution. Pre-registered: $40 / At Door: $45 CEUs: 3 hours APA, CE, CN available 3

A WEEK-END SERIES WITH LINDA SCHIERSE LEONARD, PH.D. Series: Pre-registered: $60 Friday class: Pre-registered: $25/At Door: $30 Saturday class: Pre-Registered: $40/At Door: $45 CEUs: 5 hours APA, CE, CN available, 2 hours for Friday class, 3 hours for Saturday class Location to be announced THE CALL TO CREATE Friday March 8 7:30-9:30pm Based on her book, The Call to Create, this lecture will explore the creative process by examining some of the archetypal figures in the psyche that can help and/or hinder the creative process, such as the Muse, the Sower, the Cynic, the Perfectionist, and others. We will look at the creativity we need in our lives to transform ourselves, as well as in the artistic process, so that we can learn to work with the insecurities, doubts, and obstacles that block the hopes, visions and insights that foster a rich interior life and its embodiment. Examples from the lives of well-known artists as well as of ordinary people will be used to amplify the material. THE ART OF AGING Saturday, March 9 10:00am-1:00pm Aging with grace is one of the great challenges we all face as we get older, and it requires looking at both the difficulties and joys of this journey. We will examine the archetypal structure in the psyche that relates to aging, as well as phases that the presenter and others have experienced. We will include some examples from film on dealing with the aging process, ane engage in an experiential writing exercise designed to help us age with more awareness, consciousness, and grace. FRANCES TUSTIN AND LOUISE BOURGEOIS: AN ARTIST S RESPONSE TO MISMANAGED PSYCHOLOGICAL BIRTH JoAnn Culbert-Koehn, L.C.S.W. Saturday, March 16 10:00am-1:00pm Frances Tustin states clearly that art can sometimes be used to work through mismanaged psychological birth. Louise Bourgeois used her sculptures, drawings and journals to transform her early misery and keep herself alive. This presentation will focus on her late work, done two years before her death. In "The Red Series," the full depth of her mother wound is revealed. Pre-registered: $40 / At Door: $45 CEUs: 3 hours APA, CE, CN available FROM PROPHECY TO SYNCHRONICITY: JUNG S COSMOLOGY AFTER THE RED BOOK Joe Cambray, Ph.D. Friday, March 22 7:30-9:30 pm In the midst of the major crisis of his life his confrontation with the unconscious Jung felt his world to be near dissolution. His remarkable courage in embracing the upwelling of unconscious material into which he was plunged was sorely tested, yet it served the transformation that made him into who he was to become. Beginning with the fear of madness and risking the dangers of prophecy, Jung finally emerged with an extraordinary new vision of the psyche. A key element of this vision was his formulation of the concept of synchronicity. In this lecture we will track the transformation that led to his emergence from his descent into the unconscious and take this forward into the new cosmological formulation Jung crafted. The arguments and mythological images Jung used to make these claims will be discussed in order to appreciate more fully the radical nature of the bold claims he was making. This examination will include his vision of the origins of the universe and his contribution to cosmogony as well as cosmology. Pre-registered: $25 / At Door: $30 CEUs: 2 hours APA, CE, CN available 4

A 5-PART SERIES: THE RELIGIOUS NATURE OF THE PSYCHE Series: Pre-registered: $110 Individual classes: Pre-registered: $25/At Door: $30 CEUs: 10 hours APA, CE, CN available, 2 per class WHY WE NEED THE SHADOW Michael Gellert, L.C.S.W. Wednesday, March 13 7:30-9:30 pm Where danger is, there is salvation also. -Johann Hölderlin This presentation will focus on the relationship of the ego to the shadow as an inner thou or inner other. We will explore the human problem of having a shadow, and the problem of not having a shadow (or what has been described as having a white shadow ). The latter can be just as dangerous as the former, for we not only fail to recognize our destructive tendencies but we do not benefit from the vital energies of the shadow. All become split off from us. We will also discuss the attitude that the ego must take when confronting the archetypal shadow, or as it is known more commonly, evil. IN THE LABYRINTH OF SECRET: A MEDITATION ON THE EXPERIENCE OF SECRET AND MYSTERY Julie Sgarzi, Ph.D. Wednesday, March 27 7:30-9:30pm We dance round in a ring and suppose. But the Secret sits in the middle and knows. -Robert Frost Imagine a day without secrets, or a life without the experience of mystery. Suddenly we, and the world, feel improperly exposed and oddly two-dimensional, lacking the necessary tension between the hidden and the revealed and devoid of the numinous dimension of psyche expressed as mystery. The evening s conversation will explore the meaning and archetypal nature of Secret as it lives in psyche, and, reminiscent of the Grail question, will inquire into what or whom Secret serves. We will also examine the interconnections between secret, mystery and the sacred and how such archetypal experiences are manifest in psychology as well in cultural expression. THE OTHERNESS OF GOD WITHIN Rabbi Mordecai Finley, Ph.D. Wednesday, April 3 7:30-9:30pm Without making an ontological statement about the Divine, what does it mean to encounter the Divine as Other, and why is our resistance so profound? Is it a challenge to our intellectual integrity, or is it the idea of grace and submission to a Presence that is not experienced as Self which causes conflict? Finally, is atheism a pathology, as Hillman suggests, or another avenue into the mystery of the unknown? THE RELATIONAL NATURE OF THE PSYCHE FROM A RELIGIOUS PERSPECTIVE Rabbi Scott Shapiro, Psy.D. Wednesday, April 10 7:30-9:30pm We are all shaped by our early attachments, and our psychic lives continually and inescapably exist within an inter-subjective context. Yet, according to Jessica Benjamin, the developmental aim and the deepest yearning of the psyche are also relational to be recognized as a self in the eyes of another who is known to be a separate subject, which she called mutual recognition, which is very similar to the relational theology of Martin Buber as expressed in his seminal work, I and Thou. Drawing from Benjamin s and Buber's work, we will examine the idea of a relationship with God as one of the deepest expressions of a mature psyche. SPIRITUALITY AND MEANINGFULNESS IN DAILY LIFE, PSYCHOTHERAPY, AND RELIGIOUS PRACTICE Paul Gabrinetti, Ph.D. Wednesday, April 17 7:30-9:30pm The human need to find and make meaning of our world is inherent throughout one's life, from the need to understand ourselves and others with whom we are in relationship, to contemplation of the Divine. While some find spirituality through religion, others find meaning through the experience of the soul within the context of depth psychology. In this presentation we will examine the role of spirituality and meaningfulness as it manifests in daily life, in psychotherapy, and religious practice. 5

An afternoon workshop PAINTING A FAIRY TALE Marion Anderson, 5 Tuesdays, April 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 12:00-2:00pm Fairy tales have been always a way to enter an archetypal world and therefore speak to all of us with rich symbolism. Our fairy tale concerns a heroine whose work with her hands leads her to her destiny. In this workshop we, too, will explore how our working with our hands can illumine our individuation process by painting scenes of a fairy tale and connecting these images with our individuation. No previous painting experience is necessary, as the primary focus will be on using the process of painting as a means of facilitating contact with the inner world, and on sharing our observations with one another. Enrollment is limited. Pre-registered: $120 CEUs: 10 hours APA, CE, CN available THE KING AND THE HANDMAIDEN Mandana Chambers, Esq. Saturday, April 6 10:00 am-2:00pm Many scholars believe that the story of the King and the Handmaiden, taken from Ibn Sina, the preeminent alchemist of his time, lays the foundation upon which Rumi's entire Mesnevi is based. Using this tale as an allegory, Rumi tries to demonstrate that materialism is the greatest cause of mankind s alienation from God, and that in order to regain his freedom, man must denounce materialism. This psychological interpretation seeks to highlight what happens to a culture when the shadow, with its dual aspect, and the Feminine principle are demonized and rejected by the collective ruling principle. Pre-registered: $50 / At Door: $55 CEUs: 3.5 hours APA, CE, CN available THE MANY FACES OF THE SELF IN SANDPLAY THERAPY Harriet Friedman, M.A., M.F.T. Saturday, April 13 10:00am-1:00pm To Jung, the archetype of the Self is a combination of opposites, containing both light and darkness simultaneously. This theory will be explored though the presentation of a 50-year-old woman's analytic and sand play experience. The effects of her traumatic childhood left her with such primitive rage that she was unconsciously caught in the dark side of the Self. These two analytic processes both the verbal analytic work and the non-verbal sandplay work allowed her to explore both the dark, destructive aspects and the positive numinous aspects of the Self, enabling her to make the necessary transformation to live a fuller and more authentic life. Pre-registered: $40 / At Door: $45 CEUs: 3 hours APA, CE, CN available ANTARCTICA: INNER JOURNEYS IN THE OUTER WORLD Robert Romanyshyn, Ph.D. Friday April 19 7:30-9:30pm Jung posited the reality of an in-between subtle world where psyche and matter are one, which he called the psychoid archetype. His recognition of the subtle world, which bridged his earlier studies of alchemy and his later dialogues with quantum physics, will be explored, using the example of the melting polar ice as a symptom of the breakdown of the old worldview that has split psyche and matter. A DVD of Dr. Romanyshyn's journey to the Southern Ice will open the presentation. Pre-registered: $25 / At Door: $30 CEUs: 2 hours APA, CE, CN available JUNG AND THE SUBTLE WORLD Veronica Goodchild, Ph.D. Saturday, April 20 10:00am-1:00pm This presentation will connect Jung's investigation of synchronicity and UFO phenomena with Dr. Goodchild's study of crop circles as signatures of the new emerging world view which reunites psyche and matter. Using experiential work with images, music, movement, poetry readings, and exercise within nature, we will examine ways of increasing our capacities to be receptive and responsive to the subtle world as part of an evolutionary process towards an Eros-based consciousness. Pre-registered: $45 / At Door: $50 CEUs: 3 hours APA, CE, CN available 6

THE ARCHETYPE OF THE CONIUNCTIO AS ILLUSTRATED IN A THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS Magi Guindi, M.A., M.F.T Wednesday, April 24 7:30-9:30pm The archetype of the coniunctio stands for the union of opposites, most significantly the masculine and the feminine. Universal stories, myths and fairytales often provide solutions to problems in the human psyche which consciousness alone cannot grapple with. Drawing from the story of Scheherazade and King Schahriar in A Thousand And One Nights, we will exemplify the process of evolution from a one-sided masculine position toward a more harmonious and balanced relationship to the feminine, in which a state of wholeness can be discerned. Pre-registered: $25 / At Door: $30 CEUs: 2 hours APA, CE, CN available LIFE AND IDEAS OF JAMES HILLMAN: THE MAKING OF A PSYCHOLOGIST Dick Russell Saturday, May 25 10:00am-4:00pm Location to be announced James Hillman, who authored more than twenty-five books before his death at 86 in 2011, is considered the founder of archetypal psychology, an important post-jungian school of thought. With Hillman's authorization, Dick Russell has been working on his biography for more than seven years. The two-volume work is based upon many hours of interviews with Hillman and others, as well as dozens of Hillman's unpublished letters. Russell s lecture will cover the formative years of Hillman's life, , with emphasis on the experiences that led him to Zurich's Jung Institute in the early 1950s and to becoming its first Director of Studies following his student years. Russell will read excerpts from chapters in his book Life and Ideas of James Hillman: The Making of a Psychologist (Volume One), including revelatory passages concerning Hillman's relationship with Jung. Please bring a lunch. Pre-registered: $75 / At Door: $80 CEUs: 5 hours APA, CE, CN available THE C.G. JUNG BOOKSTORE AND THE MAX AND LORE ZELLER LIBRARY The C.G. 8 A 4-PART SERIES FOR CLINICIANS, CLINICAL DIALOGUES: LOVE AND HATE IN THE INTERNAL WORLD Series: Pre-registered: $90 Individual classes: Pre-registered: $25 / At Door: $30 CEUs: 8 hours APA, CE, CN available, 2 per class For Clinicians Only WILFRED BION AND C.G. JUNG: A CREATIVE CONIUNCTIO Joseph Aguayo Ph.D. Wednesday, May 8 7:30-9:30pm Some clinical commentators have noted a certain resonance between the clinical work of Wilfred Bion and C.G. Jung. This talk will examine these resonances, and take up the question of their similarities and differences in approaching psychological work with analytic patients. Clinical examples will contrast these two approaches of working with the unconscious. THE CHEATING HEART Barry Miller, Ph.D. Wednesday, May 15 7:30-9:30pm Cheating is a psychological mechanism common to all and essential in human development. When it manifests in sexuality, confusion, destruction, and de-integration of existing psychological conditions occur for all involved. Jung emphasized that illicit impulses are at the initiation of the drive for individuation, suggesting that cheating has latent significance for psychological development. Experiences of cheating will be utilized to amplify this relationship between transgression and the psyche s need for evolution. WORKING WITH THE RELATIONAL UNCONSCIOUS Peter Wolson, Ph.D. Wednesday, May 22 7:30-9:30pm Dr. Wolson will discuss how to work with the relational unconscious in clinical practice. Similar to Jung's emphasis on the importance of the unconscious interaction between analyst and patient, this approach bridges the gap between intrapsychic and relational psychoanalytic orientations. From this perspective, transference and countertransference provoke a continual intersubjective/interpersonal unfolding of a co-created infantile drama, emanating from the internal worlds of analyst and analysand in which a vital form of parental- and/or self-loving is at stake. DISTORTIONS OF TIME AND KILLING OF TIME IN SEVERELY DISTURBED PATIENTS Avedis Panajian, Ph.D. Wednesday, May 29 7:30-9:30pm Dr. Panajian will discuss the various forms of distortions of time, and the killing of time in the treatment of severely disturbed patients, including the role of time and space in the context of the transference. The absence of body/mind integration, and its relationship to empty and deceptive use of language, leading to "dead time", will be explored in terms of the countertransference. The role of obsessions, rage, retreat, and the tyrannical mind will be illustrated with case material. THE C.G. JUNG INSTITUTE OF LOS ANGELES is an accredited Continuing Education Units provider for Psychologists, LCSWs/MTFs and Nurses. Full attendance is required to receive credits. There is an additional $10 processing fee for each continuing education course taken for credit. 8

PSYCHOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES In the same way that the body needs food, and not just any kind of food but only that which suits it, the psyche needs to know the meaning of its existence not just any meaning, but the meaning of those images and ideas which reflect its nature and which originate in the unconscious. C.G. Jung Psychological Perspectives is a beautiful quarterly journal whose mission is to promote greater consciousness by honoring and amplifying the psychology of C.G. Jung. It has been published semi-annually since When Psychological Perspectives was conceived by the late Dr. William Walcott, his goal was to create a journal that could be read and loved not only by analysts and psychologists, but by anyone interested in Jung. Psychological Perspectives honors that broad view and publishes a wide range of articles, from depth psychology to science, from politics to philosophy, as well as fiction, poetry, and current book, video and film reviews. Each issue is a feast not only for the mind but for the eye as well, filled with art that flows from the cover through the articles. Each issue spotlights a prominent contemporary artist. To subscribe and for more information: 2- and 3-year subscriptions are also available for a discounted price. 10 THE ANALYTICAL PSYCHOLOGY CLUB THE EMPEROR AND THE FOUR KINGS: METAPHORS OF POWER Yolanda Robinson, Ph.D. Saturday, January 26 10:00am-2:00pm The Emperor in tarot is often associated with Reason, Dominion, Rulership, Power and Structure. This workshop will explore various techniques and spreads using tarot as a tool for self-introspection (know thyself). How we use, delegate, or give away our power might help us understand the ways that we bring structure or chaos to our life. In addition, the four kings in your tarot deck characterize rulership within the element assigned to their suit. Using the four Cabalistic worlds of creation and the four elements of fire, water, air and earth, we will explore these five powerful archetypes as you ask specific questions that are pertinent to your own personal life. Bring your favorite deck and be ready to challenge your own personal perceptions. Pre-registered: $50 / At Door: $55 INDIVIDUATION AND COMMUNITY Allen D. Koehn, D.Min. Friday, February 15 7:30-9:30pm For Jung, individuation was not something that could happen alone, but rather it occurred within the context of a community. This presentation will consider the personal and collective dynamics that arise when a person is following a path of individuation. Drawing from a variety of perspectives, including dreams, alchemy, active imagination, and neurobiology, we will consider how a community can foster the unfolding of one's unique personality, which can support and be supported by others. Individual class: Pre-registered: $30 / At Door: $35 An APC Encore Presentation TENDING THE FIRE TOGETHER: ACTIVE IMAGINATION IN A GROUP SETTING Pre-registered: $65/At Door: $70 Maggie Gwinn, M.F.T. Sunday, April 28 10:00am-2:00pm We need the warmth of the human herd when we face the strange things which the unconscious produces. -C. G. Jung In this workshop we will work in a contained group setting, writing together, to find the wisdom that lies within each of us. In addition to lecture material, we will discuss readings by Jung and others. We will then experience the doing of active imagination with exercises and non-directive feedback. Both, new and former, workshop participants may have the opportunity to deepen their experience of an active imagination practice. This workshop is especially recommended for analytic patients, writers, anyone interested in exploring shadow material and members of Twelve-Step Programs. Continuing Education Credits are not available for programs presented by the Analytical Psychology Club. 10

THETIS: SHE WHO RENEWS Betty Smith, M.A. Saturday, May 4 10:00am-1:00pm There is a natural leisure which is interior and which restores us, and it is to be found in the sea grotto of the goddess Thetis. When the god Hephaestus's world fell apart and he fell from Olympus, he sought this grotto. Within the grotto he came to a life gently companioned, one dense with fundamental knowledge and delight. Always the life of psyche is to be embodied somehow. The seminar explores Greek myths of Thetis, while Betty's written dialogues seek to engage the critical episodes in the psyche's present time. Pre-registered: $40 / At Door: $45 AN AFTERNOON WITH RABBI DAVID WOLPE Rabbi David Wolpe Sunday, May 26 1:00-3:00pm The APC delights in welcoming Rabbi David Wolpe as he addresses Jungian analysis and the Jewish tradition in particular symbols, Kabbalah and spirit. Rabbi Wolpe will also explore what place the Jungian idea of symbolism has in Judaism, with a heavy emphasis on the Jewish mystical tradition, the place of symbols, and the idea of God in Judaism. There will be an opportunity for comments and questions following his presentation. An informal reception will follow. Pre-registered: $35/At Door: $40 - No discounts.
