Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time 2 September 23, 2018 A MESSAGE FROM FR JOSEPH Dear Friends, What were you arguing about on the way? Jesus asked his disciples in this Sunday s Gospel reading Jesus and his disciples are heading toward Jerusalem where he is resolved and committed to his mission, where the cross is waiting for him He is ready to do his Father s will, to die for the salvation of the world The disciples, however, are walking behind Jesus; they are not thinking as Jesus is They are ambitious and their ambition is not what Jesus has in mind Their ambition is to become famous and powerful in the world They want to take advantage of the situation and be on top of others For many of us, being big in the eyes of the world is important Indeed, it is not wrong to be ambitious It is not wrong to dream that we can be better at the gifts God has given us However, as Jesus disciples, we are called to walk on his way: way of love and service, way of sacrifice and the cross By his words and his life, Jesus gives us the great example of how to live our Call of Discipleship: deepening our relationship with God and putting God first in our lives Ask ourselves: do I love God above everyone and above everything? Do I love God as Jesus commands me to do: loving God with all my heart, my mind, my soul, and my strength? The call of discipleship also includes the love for others as Jesus asks us to love one another as we love ourselves Putting God first in our lives and loving others as we love ourselves should lead us to recognize our gifts and blessings given by the Lord and use them for the benefit of our souls and others Therefore, sharing generously what we have received is the sign and testimony of our love for God and the living of our Call of Discipleship This Sunday, in communion with all the parishes in the Diocese of Davenport, we are called to respond to Bishop Zinkula s invitation: taking part in the Annual Diocesan Appeal (ADA) Let us respond wholeheartedly to the ADA this year OPENING MASS FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PRAYER SERVICE FOR THE UNBORN In Christ s Peace, Love and Service
