2 The Epiphany of the Lord 2 January 7, 2018 A MESSAGE FROM FR JOSEPH RIGHT TO LIFE MARCH Dear Friends, This Sunday the Church celebrates the Feast of the Epiphany The word means appearance, manifestation, or showing forth In the Western Church, the Feast commemorates the coming of the Magi as the first manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles In the Eastern Church, this Feast primarily commemorates the baptism of Christ The angels revealed Jesus to the shepherds, and the star revealed him to the Magi Later, God the Father revealed Jesus' identity as His beloved Son at His baptism in the River Jordan In the synagogue at Nazareth, Jesus revealed himself as the promised Messiah These multiple revelations are all suggested by the Feast of the Epiphany St Paul explains this revelation as he says, The mystery was made known to me by revelation It was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit What is this mystery? Paul puts it very directly: that the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel Jesus is the Light of the world who calls us children of the Light He calls us to continue His mission of building God s kingdom on earth, the kingdom of peace and joy, kingdom of love and forgiveness We need to stretch ourselves, to leave our comfort zone, and realize life is not all about me Life is about us, about our shared inheritance, our membership in the same body and the same promise in Christ Jesus God has been manifested to all and to each of us As we begin New Year 2018, let us take some time and ask ourselves What should we do to find Jesus, to deepen our relationship with Him? Where will we find Him? What should we do to present Jesus to others who come to us this year? May the Lord bless you, your families, and all of us with His grace of peace and joy this New Year 2018! The annual Right to Life March, hosted by the North Lee County Right to Life group, will be held on Saturday, January 20th at 10:00 am The start of the March is at 10th Street and Avenue F Dress warmly and bring your family and friends to support the right to all human life, from conception to natural death Refreshments will be available at McAleer Hall after the March THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD On Monday, January 8th, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord This brings to an end the season of Christmas The Church recalls Our Lord's second manifestation or epiphany which occurred on the occasion of His baptism in the Jordan Jesus descended into the River to sanctify its waters and to give them the power to beget sons of God The event takes on the importance of a second creation in which the entire Trinity intervenes Many of the incidents which accompanied Christ's baptism are symbolical of what happened at our Baptism At Christ's baptism the Holy Spirit descended upon Him; at our Baptism the Trinity took its abode in our soul At His baptism Christ was proclaimed the "Beloved Son" of the Father; at our Baptism we become the adopted sons of God At Christ's baptism the heavens were opened; at our Baptism heaven was opened to us At His baptism Jesus prayed; after our Baptism we must pray to avoid actual sin Excerpted from Msgr Rudolph G Bandas
