Pastor s Notes Scripture Meditation Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles Father Euk has been away on retreat this this week. "But who do you say that I am?" What if Jesus asked this question today? How would people respond? Some might focus on his role in history, saying, "You are the founder of the Christian religion." Others might describe his work: "You are a teacher, a healer, a spiritual guide." Perhaps there are some who would identify him by his character, suggesting that he is a loving, generous, compassionate, and forgiving role model. But surely some would answer in the same spirit as Peter in today's reading, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." This is a profound statement of faith. To call Jesus "the Christ" is to profess that he is the Messiah, the long-awaited savior of God's people. To call him the Son of God is to profess that he is not only a miracleworking man, he is also divine. Among the disciples being questioned, Peter was the one who responded with this real insight into Jesus' identity. "Flesh and blood has not revealed this to you," Jesus replied to Peter, "but my heavenly Father." In other words, recognizing Jesus as our savior and our God isn't something we figure out on our own. It's a spiritual insight that comes through faith. Jesus did many amazing things while he walked the earth. He gave us a powerful example of love and forgiveness and he offered us teachings that help direct our lives. But we are called to see even more than these historical facts; as Christians we are called to recognize him as the Christ. Through faith, we know who Jesus really is: our God and our Savior. Thus, we are called to give him more than our respect and admiration as a remarkable man. We are called to give him our full allegiance and to worship him as the one true God. Prayer for Religious Liberty This month the US Supreme Court will make some decisions that will either insure or remove religious liberty in the United States. Starting yesterday, the feasts of Sts. John Fisher and Thomas More, we began two weeks of prayer asking God to guarantee religious liberty in the United States. I have directed that after each weekday and Saturday Mass that we recite this prayer in place of the prayer to St. Michael. PRAYER FOR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY O God our Creator, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us this great land will always be one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. PARISH INFORMATION Parish Census- Every family in the Parish should be properly registered. A prognosis of six months to live can be wildly inaccurate. And it s a medical fact that many terminally ill patients are clinically depressed and could benefit enormously from counseling and medication, yet a required consultation with a psychiatrist or hospice care expert is absent in the proposed law. There is no requirement to notify family members either. Excerpts from the US Catholic Conference of Bishops on this issue: Assisted suicide would demean the lives of vulnerable patients, exposing them to exploitation by those who feel they are better off dead. The poor, the elderly, those lacking insurance and those with disabilities would be the first to feel pressure to die. In an era of cost control and managed care, patients with lingering illnesses may be branded an economic liability, and decisions to encourage death can be driven by cost. With modern pain control methods, physical suffering can be brought under control for all dying patients. Parishioners are urged to contact their representatives NOW to voice opposition to this deadly piece of legislation. Send an email through https://votervoice.net/njcc/home or call the NJ Legislature at 609-847-3905 (Toll Free 800-792-8630) for the contact information for your Legislators.
