Pastor s Notes I would like to thank all those who have been mowing the lawns, but we still do need more people to cut the grass. A weekly two hour commitment would probably be enough to get things done. I also want to thank the landscape people who have also volunteered their time to make the church and school area look so nice. Please call the rectory if you can help. We are also in need of getting about six people to work on cleaning the radiators in the cafeteria and the church. It looks like these may have not been cleaned in many years. This would be a commitment of five hours for each location and it will not only save on the gas bills, but also on the comfort in our church during Mass. Please call the rectory if you can help. I also want to thank the team of electricians who have fixed the lighting in the gym and on the stage in preparation for the spring play, Annie. The April 18th performance will have a pre-play dinner sponsored by the Knights of Columbus after the Sunday Vigil Mass. Thanks also to the two volunteer high school students, graduates of SVS, for setting up thirteen new computers in the school. They spent many hours updating the computers. This time we purchased used laptops to replace the now obsolete XP computers in the computer lab. I am happy to report that our school enrollment exceeded my projections by about 70 students. We are hopeful that the school will be self supporting in two more years or less. If you would like to assist in helping needy parents pay their tuition bills, please call the rectory. We will be honoring SVS graduates who are serving us in law enforcement with a fund raising dinner after the Sunday Vigil Mass on October 25th. This too will be sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. The Knights of Columbus will be selling red roses for the Right to Life on the weekend of October 4/5. They will also be recruiting members. I personally have benefitted from being a 4th Degree Knight for over 32 years. It is a wonderful group of men and they do lots of charity work. They are supporting the EWTN and Salt & Light television networks. They also have a woman s group too. Fr. Euk Chapter 55 of Isaiah is the last chapter of the Book of Consolations, also known as Second Isaiah. It contains those beautiful images of come to the waters and snow and rain come down. It also stresses the complete otherness of God His ways are not at all like our ways. In this passage God is deeply concerned about our affairs in a loving way. God is seen as being extremely generous in forgiving to those who change from their evil ways. Today we know God is ever present to us not only in church, but in our personal lives. Phillipi, where St. Paul is writing from, is located in Macadonia which is now in northern Greece. Today s letter was written about 50 AD and Paul is in prison awaiting a sentence of life or death. He has a keen awareness that Jesus is the source of Life and he is looking forward to death where he can make the big transition into Eternal Life. But even Paul, being so much like Christ, still is willing to live in his suffering flesh as long as God wants so he can continue to lead others to Christ and Eternal Life. The Gospel portrays the unlimited generosity of God who is concerned about the needs of all people. He is concerned not about justice, but about His generosity and His absolute control over everything. At the end of the day, the landowner deliberately has the last come first and they get a full day s pay. He could have avoided the grumbling by paying them in the order that they started work. The landowner symbolizes God Who has compassion for the poor and unemployed. He gives a wage that is calculated not on laws of the market, but on the real needs of people. The compensation symbolizes our heavenly reward. It is not a legal claim on God because no one who has walked the earth can claim it. It is independent of any claims of human merit and work because it is from His overflowing generosity. God is loyal in keeping His word to His loyal subjects. If you love me, keep My commandments. An early call to discipleship does not entitle us to a calculated degrees of reward. The reward depends on what we do with our gifts that God has given us. God's justice cuts through the embellishments of evil. God sees what our intentions are because He knows the human heart. His judgment rebuffs the proud claims of merit. Let us pray for humility before God so that we do not fall prey to the illusion that we know God so well that we can ignore Him and get away with it. Fr. Euk
