UNITED METHODIST WOMEN YADKIN VALLEY DISTRICT Newsletter Third Quarter 2017, Volume 5, Issue 3 Our Community Calls Annual Meeting Yadkin Valley District UMW August 19, 2017 New Hope United Methodist Church

PRESIDENT: Darlene Gardner Greetings to my UMW Sisters! I have just returned from two major events at Lake Junaluska Spiritual Growth and Annual Conference. There is really nothing on earth like being in Stuart Auditorium with several hundred, or a couple of thousand, fellow Methodists singing, praying, and praising God. Both experiences were unique and I am so thankful I was able to participate. Maybe that is a little like heaven will be praising God with fellow believers all around us. This year is going by so quickly that we will soon be working on the downward turn of Yadkin Valley District, there is still so much that we can do to make life better for women, children and youth. Our Mission u will be a special part of July and then we have our own Annual Meeting in August. That is a special time when we celebrate the differences our district has made during the previous year, I know Vice President Martha Isenberg and her committee will make this Saturday one you don t want to miss. And looking ahead, the end of September finds us back at the Lake for our conference Annual Celebration. Remember, we must have at least 400 in attendance to be able to book Stuart Auditorium for next year. And where else can you get that almost heaven experience I mentioned earlier? October will bring our annual Ubuntu day and officer training will be held November 4. WOW, the year will be over before we know it! I am always so proud to say that I am a United Methodist Woman. At this year s Annual Conference, President Tonya Lanier gave an excellent report on what our conference has been doing. Sometimes it is easy to get weary in our well-doing, but when we think about the differences we make, the strength to go on comes from God himself. The many kits that were brought to Spiritual Growth will help so folks we will never see. Think of the tiny babies that will be wrapped in the receiving blankets and lovingly dressed in the warm sweaters we provided in layette kits. Bedding kits, health kits, and school kits will all go out to women, children and youth because you cared enough to support the United Methodist Women and UMCOR. Because of your commitment, lives will be changed in positive ways and the love of Jesus will be shown to those who need it the most. And through our Bible studies, meetings, and fellowship, we can grow as women and as Christians. Join me in proudly declaring yourself a United Methodist Woman putting Faith, Hope and Love in Action for 148 years! Yours in Christ, Darlene 2

Vice President: Martha Isenberg Please join me to celebrate at our Annual Meeting on Saturday August 19 at 2pm at New Hope UMC, 5125 Shattalon Drive, Winston-Salem, NC. All the awards and accomplishments are based on the reports unit presidents turned in for It s always amazing to see what has been done. Election and installation of officers for 2018 will also be held at this meeting. Our theme this year is Our Community Calls, which is based on our program book this year, A Call to Community. Rev. Marilyn Weiler, minister at Pine Grove UMC in Winston-Salem will be our guest speaker. The Bible has much to say about community and living in relationship with God. United Methodist Women is a community itself and can reach out to the greater community to help those in need. Rev. Weiler will help us better understand how we can benefit our changing community. I hope you make a special effort to get a good number of your members to come to the district Annual Meeting and help us celebrate. Refreshments will be served at the end of the meeting. Reservations are not necessary and there is no cost, but it would be helpful if you call or me the number coming from your unit by August 2nd On another note, now is a good time to see how your unit stands for the Mission Today criteria. If you see there are things you haven t done, there s still half the year ahead to do them. Have you contacted your Nurturing Partner or another district officer for a LUV visit with your unit? Doing this will help you meet one of the Mission Today requirements. Blessings, Martha See page 4 for details of YVD UMW Annual Meeting Secretary: Cathy Smith Being the Secretary for your local unit is a job of great importance. Did you realize that secretaries have been performing record keeping duties, and recording history since biblical times? They were called scribes. Without the original secretaries, we might not know of the works of our wonderful savior, Jesus Christ. Remember, by keeping accurate minutes at your meetings, and recording events in your church and unit, you are telling future generations about United Methodist Women. Happy record keeping! Cathy 3

We collected 50 suitcases for the Crossnore School and Children s Home and as Jamie reported in her article you have been very generous in your giving. We had a great time warming up with Valerie and chicken fat, walking for mission, enjoying delicious refreshments, and discussing the value of the suitcases we collected for the children!!! I would like to share with you a quote from Kim King, Director of Community Outreach at Crossnore School and Children s Home On the behalf of the children and staff at Crossnore School and Children s Home, I want to thank you and the United Methodist Women for the luggage you all generously donated. As you know many of our children frequently arrive on campus with their belongings in a grocery bag or garbage bag. Just last week you made two little boys very happy when they were each allowed to pick out a piece of luggage to keep for themselves. Please remember you can hold your own local unit walk for mission and collect funds for your walk until the end of the year. The last date to count your LUV visits for this year ends August 24. 8 SMILES to all the Yadkin Valley Ladies. Spiritual Growth Coordinator: Barbara Crotts The Spiritual Growth Retreat at Lake Junaluska was really fun this year. Our speaker really did a good job, and I am sure we all thought about all the miracles we have around us each and every day. The Legacy skit was a fun, and enlightening part of the program. Makes us think how we might plan for leaving something to the continuation of United Methodist Women and the mission work that happens thru this organization. The Legacy Fund is something we might give thought to and make plans for when we are named in the Day Apart Prayer Breakfast memorial (in the future)...but...speaking of the future....it is not too soon to start thinking of next year s Day Apart Prayer Breakfast. This event is very well attended with the number attending averaging from 250 to 300 now. If there is a church that is able to accommodate this and prepare a breakfast...full or continental, please let me know. I know there are a lot of churches that are just not large enough to handle this, but on the other hand...there are those churches that can. If you happen to be one of those churches that can host an event, PLEASE...contact me, and we will be very happy to come. April is usually the time we have this event, but we are flexible and can make it happen when it fits your schedule. My is imacrotts@yadtel.net and my cell no. is text me and I will get back to you. I also remind you...please attend our district annual meeting and leadership training coming up. And the Annual Meeting at Lake Junaluska in the fall is a great get away for us ladies. Hope to see many of you at all these events. If I can help in any way...please contact me and I will do my best to be of assistance to you all. Keep those smiles going...and look for miracles everyday. Barbara YVD UMW DAY APART / PRAYER BREAKFAST 2017 MT TABOR UMC 8

Social Action: Joyce Irby Greetings UMW Sisters, As we are in the middle of 2017, it is a good time to check our guidelines for being a UMW Justice Today Unit. But let this not be just a check off list, we truly need to seriously think about doing justice, loving our neighbors and walking humbly with God. The rise in hate crimes, bans, environmental and economic inequalities, ALL call to us to commit ourselves to continue our struggle for justice in attitudes, relationships, laws, policies and practices in our churches, states, country and around the world. Some things units can do are: a study and discussion on the Charter for Racial Justice Policies; a program from the UMW Program Book on racial justice/human rights; invite the District Social Action Coordinator to do a meeting; attend as a unit a music program or theater performance by person(s) of a different ethnic background or invite them to come to you; send a member to Mission U to take the Social Action study; and write letters or postcards to legislators concerning policies that promote equality and justice. These are just a few of the actions we can take to make standing up for racial justice a regular part of our spiritual practice. SHOUT OUT TO: Pine Grove UMW in Kernersville! It was an awesome meeting with fantastic food. Our study was on Mass Incarceration and Its Fall-out. It creates a cycle of poverty which affects the family and the community. This unit supports the Open Arms Ministry, their Community Garden, a Backpack Program for an elementary school (over 400 backpacks provided) and a lunch program called Bethany Café. WOW! Let Justice Roll Down Like Waters, Joyce Leadership Development: Mary Jo Brewer Greetings UMW members! I hope that you are enjoying the summer with all the busy fun activities. Even though it is summer, it isn t too early to plan to attend the Officer Training event in November. The Officer Training will be at Main Street UMC in Kernersville, Saturday, November 4, :00 12:00. The UMW at Main Street UMC will serve a continental breakfast no cost. Our speaker will be Marty Driver from the new Hospice House in Yadkin County and our hands-on project for the day will be items or monetary donations for the house. After the house opens this summer, Marty will send a list of needed items that I will share in the next newsletter. We will also have an offering for undesignated giving that day. Since this is our Officer Training event, we will have breakout sessions for officers, program area coordinators and circle leaders following the opening activities. We will be finished by noon. Please come to the Officer Training event and get the materials that will help you in your UMW area and encourage other members of your unit to attend. It is a great time to see other UMW members and enjoy the fellowship with one another. Look for directions to Main Street UMC in the next newsletter, as well as the list of items for Yadkin County s new Hospice House. See you in November. Love and Peace to All, Leadership Training Mary Jo November 4th Main Street UMC - Kernersville 9

Treasurer: Jamie Smith UMW Sisters, This year is passing quickly, we re already into our Third Quarter! We ve had three District Events and three Conference Events. All of these have had awesome speakers, and I ve left them feeling inspired. Just being at Lake Junaluska for Spiritual Growth was uplifting and rejuvenating! I m sure many of you feel as I do, that place always feels like Holy Ground! To report on our giving at our events our Love Offering at the Mission Study was $565; at the Day Apart/ Prayer Breakfast it was $1,285.68; and our Walk For Mission received $1,113 in pledges. It was disappointing that the Walk for Mission was not better attended, but those of us who were there left feeling better physically and spiritually! Our leaders for that event did a great job, as did our host, Oak Forest UMW! In the report I just received from our Conference Treasurer, we are second in the Conference in WfM giving. Yadkin Valley is the largest District and we always are at the top in giving in most a areas each year, so I think we should be doing better in our pledges for WfM. It is not too late for your Unit to send your pledge money, I would like to see us be first in the Conference for giving to Walk for Mission! Another Treasurer REMINDER: Our Conference Goal for this year is to increase Gift in Memory giving by 20%. Remembering those who helped us grow in our faith by their exemplary lives by giving a Gift In Memory of $5 or more is the best way I can think of to honor that person. There have been many in my life I want to honor in this way! I hope to see ALL of you at Mission U in July for fellowship, fun, learning and spiritual growth another UMW event to refresh and renew us! I ll be looking for the Unit Treasurer s third quarter remittance. Continue to pray with me that we will again meet our annual pledge to fulfill the UMW Promise of working to help the lives of women, youth and children all over the world! What does the Lord require of you: To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8 (CEB). Jamie Education & Interpretation: Valerie Prim This summer like many of my summers starts off like a whirlwind of traveling, visiting, fun and fellowship. Whats making this year different than the others is I am staying mission minded. What does that Mean? To begin with it means to S.M.I.L.E. It also means to listen more to those around you and to ponder what Christ may be asking you to do. And then Pray, the most important thing you can do to strengthen your relationship with Christ. So ladies as you're enjoying your summer S.M.I.L.E. and Pray On, Jesus is counting on Us!!! Valerie 10
