Deanna Goodwine (843) or Ladies of the Walterboro District! Let me begin by saying Thank you very much to each and every one of you for all the work you do for United Methodist Women. I appreciate each and every one of you. As our purpose states we are a community of women whose purpose is to know God and experience freedom as whole persons. We are tasked with the job of expanding the concepts of mission. It is very evident that UMW is truly passionate about missions. Our Spiritual Retreat at Lake Junaluska was awesome. The theme for this year was One in Charity. Our dynamic speaker was Reverend Pattie Gordon. She was absolutely amazing and provided spirit filled messages each session. If you were unable to attend this year, you missed a treat. You have time to plan to attend next year. It is always so refreshing to be at the Lake and have your spirit fed with God s amazing words. To God be the Glory. Our Come Together Be Together held on June 3rd at Buckhead United Methodist Church. Thank you very much to the Women of Buckhead, you were such great hostesses. You ensured 2 that everyone in attendance felt welcomed. What can I say about our workshop Leader, (cont. next page)
President s word s continued; P.2 Andreia Shecut? She was absolutely amazing and provided a wealth of vital Social Action information. Her presentation was presented in the manner that everyone could use it in some manner. Andreia is our Social Action Coordinator. She stressed the fact that everyone should get involved with Social Action. We can make a difference in so many ways. Thank you for that wonderful presentation. Please be reminded that Mission U will be held in July. I pray that I will see many of you there. Also, bring some youth along with you so that they can have the experience. I would like to also remind the Local Presidents of the reports due by August 31st. Reports must be received so that the required certificates can be done prior to our Annual Meeting schedule in September. In closing, I pray God s blessing upon each of you and your family. Once again, thank you for your continued support. The Walterboro United Methodist women are on the move. I can be reached at (843) or at deannah4391@gmail.com or
Marilyn Bogard It was an exciting pleasure to sit and discuss with the Vice Presidents of the Walterboro District when we had our officer training day. The Vice President is the "Program Police"--making sure that UMW activities and programs are in accordance with the UMW purpose: -to know God, -to experience freedom through Christ, -to develop a creative supportive fellowship, -to expand concepts of mission by participating in the global ministries of the church. We also reviewed the Mission Today form and how the activities listed can help plan programs through the year. Please read the Mission Today form (found in this newsletter) to see how your unit can expand your programs this year. 4
Thelma Hudson Greetings, Praise God form whom all Blessings Flow. We thank God for all his blessings that we are receiving. Thank you to all the units that sent in their first quarter pledges. Your next quarter report is due June 15th. Remember our pledge for the Walterboro District is $25, We need each unit to take a look at your pledge for this year. If you pledge less than $ we ask you to take a look at your pledge again at your next meeting. We need your support as we try to meet our pledge for All the treasurers should have received a folder from the treasurer s training. In this folder there are some things you should be aware of: A local organization of United Methodist Women may organize in one of three ways: Local church-based group. Charge/cluster group. District group. Make sure you have one checking account in the name of United Methodist Women. The Unit s Treasurer and President are the signers on the account Please use the United Methodist Women conference tax ID number. Do not deposit United Methodist Women funds in a personal or a local church account. Keep supplies, papers and books in a safe place Keep a file of all signed pledge cards until the next pledge service. Record all contributions received at each meeting. Emptying the Treasury at the End of the Year The monies given for United Methodist Women are given for mission. You may keep enough to pay your pledge for the first quarter of the coming year. However, a local group may discover, toward the end of a given year, that it has more money than it needs to carry it into the first few months of the new year. This may have happened because: (cont.. next page) 5
Page 2. continued Thelma Hudson The budgeted amount for the Pledge to Mission was too low. Sources of income were underestimated. Income from a fundraising event may not have been budgeted. A local group should keep in its treasury only the minimum amount necessary to carry it into the first few months of the next year, until members Mission Giving pledges and gifts begin coming in. The committee on finance recommends how to use these extra funds. The committee could choose one of the following options: 1. Send the extra funds as additional mission funds (added to your Pledge to Mission). 2. Present one or more Special Mission Recognitions or Gifts to Mission to members or friends of the unit. 3. Make a supplementary gift to A Brighter Future for Children and Youth, a mission program that receives United Methodist Women National Office funding. Funds given in these ways to empty the treasury should be sent to the district treasurer. The act of emptying the treasury is important because the funds were given to be used for mission, not to build up a bank account for the unit. Saving for a rainy day is not good stewardship since today is a rainy day for thousands of women, children and youth for whom our mission money offers hope. Mission Locally: Contributions to local mission programs are appropriate. 6 Items that are the responsibility of the total church are not e.g.) church budget or building fund, parsonage upkeep, or groups, such as boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and the united Fund, not all inclusive. Blessings for the Journey. Thelma Hudson, District Treasurer Phone number (843) Address: 326 Locust St. Walterboro, SC 29488
Eva Risch Now is the time to catch up or finish your Reading Plan for the year. I hope many of you have completed Plan IV, having read two books from each of the five categories plus 10 additional books from any category and regular reading of Response and New World Outlook. Selections can be from the reading lists. Please send me your report before August 30 to receive your certificate at Annual Meeting. The new UMW Handbooks will be available at each District event, price is $ Each Unit is encouraged to have the Handbook available for your membership. You may contact me at or erisch25@aol.com Blessings, Eva Risch, Secretary of Program Resources Queen Trappier 1 Thessalonians 3:12 states May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else. Thanks to all our Walterboro District United Methodist Women who attended Quiet Day and the Spiritual Growth Retreat at Lake Junaluska. It s always a wonderful time at the lake, are time to reflect upon your relationship with God, and are time to listen to God. Ladies Thanks for all you do. Be reminded that each unit must send me the names of any United Methodist Women that passed since August 31, Names must be received by August 31, Micah 6:6 He told you, O mortal, what is good: and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice and to love Kindness, and to walk humbly with you God. 7
Social Action: On Saturday, May 20 th 2017 I had the pleasure of joining some of our UMW and multiple others from Sand Hill, Canaan and other South Carolina United Methodist churches for F.A.N. training. Our session was blessed to have two pastors attending; one was Reverend Jeffrey Salley my Pastor. Canaan UMC hosted this training session. What is F.A.N. and what does it have to do with Social Action? The South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church is partnering with the Prevention Research Center at the University of South Carolina to offer Faith, Activity and Nutrition a free faith-based program that works to create a healthy church environment. FAN helps churches create an environment conducive to physical activity and healthy eating.(1) This training was focused on UMC volunteers who will work with church committees to help them make changes in their church environment. Andreia Shecut It was interesting to note that South Carolina consistently ranks near the bottom nationwide in overall health.(2) Don t we all know of someone who has diabetes and/or high blood pressure? A UMW Social Action could be to work to ensure that there is a healthy food choice at every church function where we serve food and to report on it at our meetings. How was it received and will we serve it again? Lastly, I was blessed to give another presentation titled Social Action What Is It? to the UMW at the Walterboro District Come Together Be Together on June 3, 2017 at Buckhead UMC. There were 45 women from 9 different churches in attendance. The chapters from these churches have probably met the Diamond Unit Award criteria. Please check and mail or the form to me at acl398@aol.com. Sincerely submitted, Andreia Shecut Andreia Shecut acl398@aol.com & (2)
Walda Letson Please remember that our next newsletter will be published in September, If you would like to submit an article in the Angelic Times, please send it two weeks before the beginning of September. If I don t have them, I can t share your units experiences and blessings. I would very much like to see more news and pictures from all of you; however I am very excited to have all the new pictures some of you did send in. THANK YOU!. Send your articles anytime! I will save them for the next newsletter. ENJOY YOUR SUMMER!!! In God s Grace and Blessings, Walda Letson Thank you to all who have collected and contributed, since last August, our District UMW has turned in about 8 POUNDS of pull-tabs to the Ronald McDonald Charities, about 150 Box tops for Education to the Brunson Elementary School in Hampton County, and 80 Campbell's Labels for Education were sent to Wallace Family Life Center 9 (one of our 5 SC missions). I have probably turned in a gallon of used stamps with another gallon to go in July, these go to Marion Mission Warehouse to help fund their projects. These are four ways each of us can help worldwide need. Every district meeting, look for the collection containers to drop off what you and your unit have saved and/or collected. Remember the MISSION TODAY form needs to be completed by August 31st and sent to Marilyn Bogard istres97@msn.com.

St. George UMW has a annual Mother-Daughter Luncheon. This year ours was held on February 4th. This year we had a slide presentation and program on Alaska, given by two of our church members who lived in Alaska for over 10 years. Our theme this year was "Redbirds and Snowflakes," and the Parlor Hall was decorated with snowflakes and colorful redbirds. We had shrimp and grits and delicious fruit and desserts. It is a popular bonding event for many generations of our church family. Sincerely, Melissa H. Smith, St. George UMW 11 Buckhead UMW at Spiritual Growth Retreat. Thelma Hudson, Patricia McClellen and Marie Thompson enjoying their spiritual friendship and the beautiful Lake Junaluska together.
Mr. Bill Love, Exec. Dir. of Beaufort Cty. Dept. of Disabilities and Special Needs spoke to our unit meeting this month. Prior to him coming we all met in the Fellowship Hall with 5 sewing machines and a table full of items to put on the activity mats, and completed over 25 to present to Mr. Love for the people in the program. These activity mats are intended to help them learn small life skills, such as buttoning, zipping and tying a shoelace among other things. We had great fun being creative and enjoying each other s company. We learned a lot about the organization and were very excited to present him with a $1, check for Camp Treasure Chest, supported by ABLE. beautiful Bible Verse purses for to take to 2017 SC Conference UMW Mission U in July held at the Spartanburg Methodist College. In spite of a very rainy Bluffton Village Festival ephant sale was a sucmoved everything inside did as good as the year The theme this year is Embracing The World With12 The Gospel.
