Mike Bailey and Rev. Randy Blanchard sat with 12 pastors and laity to brainstorm on formalizing a Yadkin Valley Congregations 4 Children Team. Congregations 4 Children (C4C) is an initiative in both the North Carolina and Western North Carolina Conferences to resource churches in helping families and children in poverty through school-church partnerships. C4C is not a set program but a tool of best practices to assist churches in working with the schools. Many may recall the work of the former Winston-Salem District under the leadership of Vickie Sigmon around twenty years ago to launch the School-Church Connection. The school-church relationships created under this outreach remain today and model some key C4C objectives including weekend or summer meals, backpacks, mentoring and reading support. After reviewing C4C materials from the Conference website and an informative discussion to better understand just what C4C is all about, the group decided the Yadkin Valley C4C Team would focus on 4 C s : Celebration Highlight existing churches and Missional Networks working with schools and pray on behalf of these efforts; Communication - Make known resources available to start or enhance C4C related work; Collaboration - Engage with people and agencies to that can support the work; Connection - Recruit laity to serve on Yadkin Valley District Team and serve as C4C contact for county or Missional Network. Surveys will be provided during upcoming Charge Conferences to obtain information on C4C activity in each county via our Missional Networks. For more information on Congregations 4 Children in Western North Carolina, visit the website If you are interested or know someone who should serve on the District C4C Team, contact Yadkin Valley Chair, Camille Z. Roddy at czroddy@hotmail.com. Camille Z. Roddy Community Outreach Coordinator St. Paul UMC Winston Salem

2 October 2018, Volume 7, Issue 10 Page 2 The Spiritual Academy for Leading Transformation (SALT) is an eight-month program designed to identify, inspire, train, and support a new cohort of spirituallymature lay people able to partner with clergy to lead effective change in congregations and communities. As mentioned last month, SALT is one of the main foci of my work with the District. I am excited about working with the program and hope that many of you will find encouragement to join in. I thought it best to hear from those who have benefitted from the course, in their own words. If you are interested in the course, please feel free to contact me: My name is Michelle Cobb, from Centenary UMC in Winston-Salem, and I am a member of SALT 2. The processes that we learned in SALT have enriched my life to the point that my self-talk has even changed notably. We worked through various methods to identify our strengths and take full ownership of them. The course reached me spiritually so that I knew that God gave me these strengths, and gave the other members theirs, so that we could work together to bring about positive change in this world. By learning to look at my strengths and not focus on my weaknesses, my overall self-esteem improved. One of my strengths is leadership. The methods taught in the class about leadership were geared towards helping society as a whole and not just a company, which was what my previous leadership classes had taught me. We learned to identify ways to help the community by bringing people together and knowing that many minds working towards a common goal can make much more progress than a single person can. A very important part of this was the ICNU ( I see in You ) methods of letting others know that you see their strengths, and how this will engage them to be a part of these forward moving changes to help God and his people. FREE 5-Part Bible Study Amy Johnson, in the District Office, has sent word around previously, but if any churches would like copies of a Bible study which I prepared for the Methodist Church in Great Britain, they are available for free. Simply stop by the District office. The title is Exploring the Word of God in Scripture and the topic is how both Testaments look at and understand the word of God. If you want to read more about it, please visit my web site: Also, if your churches have any interest in putting some sparkle in their understanding of scripture, have a look at this link to my web site The Joy of Texts ; I am happy to deliver a seminar at your church. But as Mike Bailey is quick to remind me this is above and beyond my normal District hours. With you in common ministry, Jack Lawson, Mission Implementation Coordinator jlawson@wnccumc.org;

3 October 2018 Volume 7, Issue 10 Page 3 With the transition from the former admin website to the new website, we are unable to access the reports to update the Apportionment Honor Roll. We will hopefully have this rectified by next month. APPORTIONMENT - A portion meant for the service of God. (The above is the definition of what the word apportionment really means as stated by a former Conference Treasurer, Bob Meyers.) We will continue to add to our Apportionment Honor Roll as churches pay 100% of their apportionments. The churches added this month are in bold lettering. Congratulations to the following churches who have paid 100% of their District AND Conference apportionments for 2018: Bethel (Mocksville) Center (Mocksville) Cherry Street Cooleemee Delta East Bend Epworth Longtown Mallalieu-Jones Maple Grove Mountain Grove Mount Herman Mt. Pleasant (W-S) New Union Oak Grove (Mt. They need to make sure that everything required to be in the buckets are indeed included. This must be done before they can ship them out to the needed areas. If a group from your church would like to assist the Mission Response Center in this task, please call Dwaine Morgan at to schedule a time. Resources Available from the District Resource Center The District Resource Center has several Advent studies available. If you haven t selected your study for Advent, stop by and browse the selections. There are also ideas for children s ministry as well.
