President: Martha Isenberg Fall greetings to all United Methodist Women! We have had a busy year in our district and I want to thank you for all you have done reaching out to those in your communities and around the world. I look forward to reading all about the accomplishments of your unit in your year end reports that are due December 15. Now is the time to evaluate whether your unit has met the criteria for a Mission Today Unit. If you haven t reached it yet, there is still time. Thanks to Mary Jo Brewer, our vice president, and her committee for planning an excellent Annual Meeting which was held at Trinity UMC in King. We were privileged to have Julia Willis, our conference president, to share highlights of our 150 year legacy. It was wonderful to see 7 more units recognized for being Mission Today Units than in the past year and to see many recognized for being Justice Today Units, giving in all Five Channels of Giving, and participating in the Reading Program. One of the most important meetings of the year is our Leadership Development Day on November 3 at Concord UMC in Mocksville. This is a day for training all new and continuing officers for For the past few years, this has been the district event which had the lowest attendance. I d like to see that changed this year. If you are a president, this is the meeting that you will receive the report forms for the year plus new information that will help you do your job more easily and effectively. If a president is not able to attend, please ask one of your members to pick up your information pack so we won t have the expense of mailing those. More information about Leadership Development Day is in Ruth Hoyle s article. I look forward to seeing you there! Martha Bethlehem Center Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Did you know that there is a new building addition to the Bethlehem Center that will add 4 new classrooms and additional parking space? Construction is moving along and you are invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, November 13 at 9am at the center at 520 North Cleveland Avenue, Winston-Salem. Mayor Allen Joines will be there to cut the ribbon and celebrate the grand opening of the new addition. The Center has provided Five-Star Early Childhood Education to the Winston-Salem community for over 95 years and this expansion will allow them to serve even more children and families. United Methodist Women owns the building and the center is one of our mission institutions, so come and celebrate this expansion and tour the facility after the ceremony. 2

Vice President: Mary Jo Brewer This year is just racing by. I can t believe that it is fall already. It was a busy summer for United Methodist Women, with our Spiritual Growth Retreat at Lake Junaluska, Mission u at Pfeiffer University and our Yadkin Valley District Annual Meeting. This fall is busy also with Conference Annual Celebration, Conference Leadership Development and our Yadkin Valley District Leadership Development/Officer Training. Thanks to all who attended the Yadkin Valley Annual Meeting and to all who helped in any way with it. And a special thanks to the Trinity UMC United Methodist Women for hosting the meeting and for the delicious refreshments. Debra Lawson, Trinity UMW President, was a joy to work with. Conference President Julia Willis had a good message for us. We had good music and the Legacy Fund skit proved that we have some good actresses/comediennes in our district. Through our Hands-On project, we collected $ for the Legacy Fund. Thank you for your contributions. The annual meeting is the time for us to conduct the business of the district and to share reports. There is a lot to do at the meeting and we try to do it all in the least amount of time possible. Thanks again to all who attended and to all who helped with the annual meeting. I hope that you learned something and enjoyed it. It is a privilege to serve as your Vice President. Let us continue to support the work of the United Methodist Women in our local units/churches, in our Yadkin Valley District and in our Western North Carolina Conference. I look forward to seeing you at our next event, district and conference. Love and Peace to All, Mary Jo Leadership and Development : Ruth Hoyle The year is passing quickly. 5 Treasurer: Jamie Smith The Power of Bold, our theme for Annual Celebration, continuing with our Assembly theme in May. While reflecting on the program and sessions I attended at Assembly, I think there is no better time than the present to be more BOLD. As our Conference President, Julia Willis wrote in her most recent Conference Gram article We can feel helpless or take action, take a stand, and be BOLD! Many local units are feeling the crunch, saying member numbers are down, members are getting older, their giving is decreasing All these things, to me, indicate that they are feeling helpless. I wonder how helpless those eight women in Boston felt in 1869? Instead of feeling helpless and hopeless they put their faith into action, stepped up to be BOLD organizing the Women s Foreign Missionary Society. Without their BOLDness where would we be today? Think of how many lives the UMW have touched through our many missions! Be strong and bold; have no fear or dread of them, because it is the Lord your God who goes with you, he will not fail you or forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:6 I encourage you to be BOLD, keep the faith, take action, take a stand. Read response magazine and check the UMW website to see where our mission dollars go. It takes all of us working together to help those in need locally, nationally and globally. We may not be large in number in some local units but For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am among them. Matthew 18:20. Jesus will be with us when we meet, just as he was with the eight in Boston. At our Annual Meeting in August, we collected $3, for our Hands On project The Legacy Fund! Our undesignated love offering was $1,191.83; program resource sales were $ and Gift to Mission and in Memory card sales were $230. Do you doubt Jesus was with us? Let us remember the pennies those eight women in Boston saved to send the first two Women s Foreign Missionary Society mission ladies to India. If they could take action, take a stand, be that BOLD in 1869, just think of what we can do in 2018! Continue the work they started! Be BOLD! In Christ, Jamie Because of the necessary rescheduling of Annual Celebration, and Leadership Development Day for District Officers, our Ubuntu Day of Service originally scheduled for October 20th has been CANCELLED. See you next year on October 12, 2019! 5

Greetings UMW Sisters, Social Action: Joyce Irby I know that units are doing what we are all about helping those in need in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence. As we seek Social Justice, let s keep an eye on the aid that comes now and in the long term. There are some communities that still did not get help from our government agencies from just a few years ago. Economic inequality exists today but also the effects from the past are still with us now. Communities of color were restricted by laws, regulations and city planning zones as to where they could live. Those areas were across the railroad track, swamp lands and undesirable properties. SHOUT OUT TO: UMW at Trinity in King! I enjoyed my visit with them. We had group discussions with presentations on Mass Incarceration, Climate Justice, School to Prison Pipeline and a few other topics. The ladies brought such insight and concern about these issues and what we can do. This unit has a lot going on such as: supporting two missionaries; providing Bingo prizes for a nursing home; providing classroom supplies throughout the year; and supporting the King Outreach Ministry. KUDOS, ladies! In Peace, Joyce Communications Coordinator: Deborah Brooks I hope you were minimally impacted by this devastating hurricane. Maybe took advantage of a rainy day to catch up on the Reading Program. My husband and I travelled to various towns in the eastern part of the state during Labor Day weekend. In the news, I recognized towns and highways mentioned that we visited/travelled and could not imagine that they are now under water. Prayers to all who were impacted. Don t forget to send us your 2019 unit officer information. Forms should be available at Leadership training and I plan to send an electronic version to your presidents and/or officers on behalf of Pam Myers, your new Communications Coordinator. My tenure is up as Communications Coordinator and I have enjoyed all four years! Seriously! I found it interesting to read all the various names of members and addresses. Some common some quirky. I have learned a lot and I appreciate everyone working with me to get the newsletter out. Thank you to the YVD UMW district team for all their contributions. Thank you to all who submitted pictures and all of you who were patient with me as I took pictures. Please continue to send us pictures either to the Historian and or Communications as we want to see what our units have accomplished. And thank you to PIP/Sir Speedy for their friendship and skills in getting the newsletter out. Many blessings to you. Deb 6

Secretary of Program Resource: Donna Ireland Greetings to my UMW sisters! I hope you have had an enjoyable summer and have read at least one book. Fall is approaching and before you know it this year will be over. There are lots of books on the reading program that you can read in the next few months so you can complete Plan 1(5 books and one from each category) and many of these are not long. I encourage you to read so you can become educated on the issues that UMW focuses on. I have read another book that I want to share with you. It is called Across Many Mountains: A Tibetan Family's Epic Journey From Oppression to Freedom. In this memoir, Yangzom Brauen tells the story of her now 90-yearold grandmother Kunsang (a nun) and grandfather's (a monk) daring decision to flee from Chinese controlled Tibet to India with her mother, then 6 years old. With little money and no idea of what they would meet along the way, they began their journey to cross the Himalayas on foot. It is another book that I learned so much from and it was really good. There is the possibility of changes coming to how Program Resources will be handled in the future. As soon as I know more about it, I will share the info with you. I know many of us do not like change because we are comfortable with how things have always been done. But sometimes change is for the better. I guess if it does change I might not find it too hard since I m still pretty new at this job and still learning. Just giving you a heads up. I am happy to come and visit with your unit and will be glad to share info with you about the reading program. I always enjoy visiting with my UMW sisters. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions and if I don t know the answer, I will find someone who does. Blessings, Donna Parlimentarian: Brenda Wills DID YOU KNOW? One of the questions often asked is as follows: Isn't it necessary to summarize matters discussed at a meeting in the minutes of that meeting in order for the minutes to be complete? Answer: Not only is it not necessary to summarize matters discussed at a meeting in the minutes of that meeting, it is improper to do so. Minutes are a record of what was done at a meeting, not a record of what was said. [RONR (11th ed.), p. 468, ll ; Brenda 7

The Legacy Fund: Rhita Newcomb Dear Sisters in Christ, What will be your Legacy? In a little over 6 months we will be celebrating 150 years in mission, what an accomplishment!! It s a story I never tire of hearing two cents and a prayer, women seeing a need and fulfilled that need. I am so honored to be part of an organization that is constantly looking at the needs of the world and helps to fulfill those needs by making us aware and educating us on the needs and the ways we may be able to help. What is your two cents and what is your prayer for United Methodist Women and the future? What will be your Legacy? The United Methodist Women know the legacy they want to leave for the future members a legacy that will continue to support and help women, children, and youth around the world with their many missional organizations and programs, they are too numerous to list in this article, I hope you have discussed these programs at your circle meetings and have read about them in response magazine and have been involved in working with these programs but it cannot continue without your support Please pray about how you can help this Legacy to move forward and continue the work that started on two cents and a prayer. The Legacy Fund is a great way to remember the women that have changed your life through United Methodist Women and the lives of others. It is also a great way to thank the women that have been your mentor, encourager, friend, and sister in Christ by making a donation in their honor. What a great way to honor or remember their legacy as a United Methodist Woman!! Blessings, Rhita Secretary: Cathy Smith UMW Secretaries Please bring your questions and tips about secretarial duties to our Leadership Training meeting. We'll discuss best practices at that time. Looking forward to seeing you there. Cathy 8

Spiritual Growth Coordinator: Barbara Crotts Hello fellow U.MW Sisters. I have been reading a book from our Reading Program, and would like to share something about one of the books "50 Women all Christians Should Know...Learning From Heroines of the Faith." All of the women written about are interesting, but the one that I would like to focus on is Clara Swain. Clara was born in Elmira, New York in 1834, the youngest of ten children. At the age of eight she officially joined the Methodist Church in Castile, N.Y. and declared herself a Christian. She discovered her gift of nursing at a young age when, as a teenager, she cared for a Presbyterian minister and his family as they suffered through the ravages of typhoid fever. After the minister and two of the children died she stayed with the widow and surviving children for many months as they recovered from their loss By 1859, she was teaching school, where she taught for three years, but did not enjoy her role and looked for any other opportunity, which came when she was asked to train with Dr.Cornelia Greene at the Castile Sanitarium. Three years later she was admitted to the Women's Medical College in Philadelphia. She graduated in The Women's Union Missionary Society of America invited her to serve as a medical missionary in India. She departed from N.Y. on November 3, 1869 and arrived in India Jan. 20, On her first morning of duty, she stepped outside her humble dwelling to be greeted by a group of Indian women in need of her medical services. She treated 14 patients that day, despite the fact that her medical supplies and medicines had not yet arrived from America. By the end of her first year in India, Clara treated more than 1025 patients and made 250 home visits. She often included Bible study with her medical visits. Scripture passages were often included on the back of her prescriptions. By 1874, construction of the Women's Hospital and Medical School was completed...the first of its kind in all of Asia. Clara spent 27 years of her life as a medical missionary, visiting America only twice to restore her health. Today Clara Swain is honored with the distinction of being the first woman physician in India, and the first fully accredited female physician sent out by any missionary society into any part of the non- Christian world. Her impact on the people of India, particularly the women and children, was tremendous.. Clara loved India and its people, and she considered India her true home. "This is my country, the land to which my Father has called me", she wrote. It's clear that when God called Clara to offer her services to the Indian people, she didn't give them only her medical expertise, Clara Swain gave the people of India her whole heart. I have only briefly touched on her life in this article, and highly recommend that you read this book, and enjoy all the chapters of the 50 women included. It will help to grow spiritually to know and experience how these women's lives have made an impact on so many. I truly hope that all of you have been safe during the stormy time we have experienced from Florence. I look forward to our time together at Lake Junaluska and the next events of our Yadkin Valley District and Conference. Blessings to all Barbara 9

RED BIRD MISSION On Thursday evening, August 2, Valerie Prim, Polly Caudle, Rev Marilyn Weiler, Glenda and Tony Beauchamp loaded up the Sharon UMC trailer with household items, baby items, school supplies, office supplies, and medical supplies. We had a heavy load. Early on Friday morning, August 3rd, with Tony Beauchamp driving his truck, we had breakfast and headed to the Red Bird Center in Kentucky to deliver all those goodies. It was raining when we left and there were some flooding in places, but when we crossed the state line into Tennessee, the sun came out and was a beautiful day. We got there around noon time and unloaded the supplies at different places. We enjoyed a tour of the facility and all of us hopes to return again. They do so much for the community with the stores, gardens, medical help, and schools. We enjoyed going into the store to see the crafts that the people in the area make to sell. We would like to thank all the Yadkin Valley District for collecting all those supplies as many were collected from our District Mission Study back in March. For Sharon UMC for the use of the trailer. For Pine Grove UMC for keeping them safe until we could go to Kentucky's Red Bird Conference Center and school. The trip was an education for all of us. Polly Caudle, Historian 10

Happy 150th Anniversary! Let s Celebrate! by Sandy Wilder In just a matter of months, we will celebrate together our 150th year as women organized for mission. In the midst of this busy fall season of conference, district, and unit events and leadership meetings, we don t want to lose sight of the biggest celebration of all! We re fast approaching our anniversary year of How will you celebrate? With whom will you share the story of United Methodist Women in these upcoming months? If you don t already have your celebrations planned, let us offer a few 150th suggestions for you: - March 23, 2019, our actual 150th anniversary date, is a Saturday, so consider organizing a celebration of United Methodist Women that lasts for that entire weekend (March 22-24). Activities might include, on Friday: a service day, a unit program. On Saturday: a 150th birthday party or special event, a women s slumber party, a retreat, a service day, participation in the Day of Giving (March 23). On Sunday: a worship service planned and conducted by United Methodist Women, a festive luncheon, a prayer service. - Plan a Fun-Raiser and announce the amount raised at a 150th birthday party over the March 23 weekend. What is a Fun-Raiser? It is an activity your unit, circle, or conference creates to raise money for the Legacy Fund Endowment Campaign. Details about how to Fun-Raise for the Legacy Fund can be found at the Legacy Fund website: unitedmethodistwomen.org/ Remind your members that because every woman needs to have a valid will, everyone can easily plan for a gift of any size to United Methodist Women in her will. Could we get 150 bequest commitments from each conference in our anniversary year?

- Promote the legacy of your United Methodist Women community and global work by sending a story to your local newspaper or pitching a news story to your local news station. - Challenge all your members to stretch during the anniversary year by giving an amount every month during 2019 to the Legacy Fund. For instance, if only 179,000 of us gave only $18.69 twelve times once per month in 2019, we would exceed our entire campaign goal! Could you suggest that each member give $20 per month, or more? - Honor your leaders by presenting them with the special 150th Mission Recognition pin or the 150th necklace. - Continue your 150th celebrations in 2019 at Mission u, Annual Conference, conference and district Annual Meetings, and all conference, district, and local events next year. Where do you find the resources you need for your regular Legacy Fund displays and for your anniversary celebrations? First, contact your conference Legacy Fund Liaison. She can help provide commitment (pledge) envelopes, blank 150 note cards, a one-pager describing the Legacy Fund, a promotional flyer for the special 150th anniversary pin and necklace, and copies of the new fun-raiser, planned giving, and Legacy Fund brochures. If you don t know who your conference Legacy Fund Liaison is, ask the Legacy Fund team by ing: legacy150@unitedmethodistwomen.org. And finally, you ll find further information and resources such as the Legacy Fund toolkit on the Legacy Fund website: unitedmethodistwomen.org/150. You may already have your 150th birthday celebrations planned and, if so, please share your ideas and photos with Anissa New-Walker, awalker@unitedmethodistwomen.org, at the National Office so we can in turn share your creativity with other members. God will make our love fruitful, whether we see that fruitfulness or not. ( Bread for the Journey by Henri Nouwen). What a privilege we have: to be faith, hope and love in action at this time in the history and the future of United Methodist Women. Together, we are building our legacy!
