3 Medlin Around I need a truck! There, I ve said it. I have been whining for a couple of years about needing a truck and wanting a truck, but I still don t have one. I do not want a bright, shiny one, with all the bells and whistles. I don t want one that is too nice to use. In fact, I want one for the very purpose of throwing stuff in and hauling it. Sarah is always asking me to stop by Lowe s and pick up some mulch..20 pound bags at least three bags. Or she would like for me to get some fertilizer and grass seed or some plants or small shrubs or trees. And just exactly where is this list of things to go? These items are to go in the trunk of my car, that s where! My Toyota is not new it is a functional car the interior is in good shape..the floor mats protect the carpet nicely. But in the blinking of an eye my car suddenly becomes a hauling vehicle! Just toss these lawn and garden items into the trunk of my car or cover the back seat with plastic and toss them on the back seat. And, in the blinking of an eye, my car becomes a truck. Plants are hanging out the windows, and trees are coming out of my trunk. I look like a joke driving down the road. Well, I am tired of this. I am sick of getting home, unloading all this stuff, and having all sorts of residue in my trunk and back seat. All the spills require that I vacuum. Then one thing leads to another, and all at once I am cleaning the whole interior of the car in lieu of setting out plants. I have had it. I am going to buy a truck. Not a nice one. Just an old, used one that has a good bed in it where I can toss bags of mulch, fertilizer, shrubs, pine needles, and all the rest. I don t care how old the truck is as long as it runs properly and doesn t burn oil. I hate the cars and trucks that burn oil. When you get behind someone like this you can t see too well, and you can hardly breathe at all. You see oil, you smell oil, and you taste oil. I just want a good old work truck to call my own. It doesn t have to be easy on the eyes, as long as it is gentle on the earth. All of us who serve in ministry know that the work of planting requires not only having the things to be grown, but having the method of getting these things from a current location to the location where they are needed. The truth is that we cannot grow what we do not have! For that reason talking about spiritual growth is not enough. We cannot describe it and hope someone catches it like they do the flu. If we are to grow it we have to know, feel, and understand the things of God that we are planting. Hummm, sort of sounds like making provisions for lawn and garden care, doesn t it? God be close to you. Bill 3

New topics include: Moving from good things to God-Things: strategic visioning Checking Vital Signs: assessing local church potential Staff Development Retreats based on the needs of your staff Leadership/Ministry Team Retreats based on your leadership needs Transitional/Situational Leadership Coaching Church Transformation Teams are trained by Plowpoint and serve as unpaid servants to journey with your congregation through various phases of ministry. As this ministry is supported at the conference level, the costs, often less than $500, are based solely on travel reimbursement and materials. If you feel you want to explore the possibilities of Plowpoint for your congregation, please contact Dr. Medlin, District Superintendent, bmedlin3@aol.com or Donna Cooke, Director of Church Revitalization,. If your Missional Network has met and has an idea to be the hands and feet of Christ to the world, please contact Donna Cooke,, before November 2 nd. You can find the Scorecard on the conference web-site or in hard copy form with your charge conference materials. 4
5 TEN TIPS TO KEEP YOUR MINISTRY (AND YOU) FROM BOTTOMING OUT 1. Make time for a personal spiritual retreat. It need not be far away Well of Mercy or the Starrette Farm to practice the spiritual disciplines meaningful to your growth in God. 2. Develop a mentoring relationship as you ask God who you can help raise up as a leader in the next generation. 3. Turn off your technology even if only for 10 minutes. Believe it or not, the world can spin without you for 10 minutes. 4. Talk to the people on the margins. You already know the person who points out the typos in the bulletin so seek a silent worshiper who may have intriguing unspoken insights. 5. Mine your church s goldmine. Teens are tech-savvy and can help spruce up your graphics and photography; older adults have rich stories to tell. Odds are you have gifted congregants who would be willing to share, if even on a short term basis, if you ll just ask. 6. Engage in activities that bring life to you. What do you love to do? Just do it! 7. Spot-check your health. Are you sleeping well, eating well, and walking intentionally? 8. Develop healthy friendships. Give and receive encouragement. As Carole King said, You just call out my name and you know wherever I am, I ll come runnin. 9. Set boundaries. Your family/spouse will treasure your full attention by declaring that time sacred. Delegate what you cannot accomplish. 10. Laugh (out loud!) and embrace the gift of joy. We have a set of DVDs in the resource library of I Love Lucy shows. They are hysterically funny and you can check them out at no cost. Credit: Outreach Magazine October
