Smith, Potentate From Your Potentate Phil Smith The year of 2012 is off to a super start and we are moving along at a fast clip. Don't be left behind by not attending the events that are being planned for you and your family's enjoyment. Like the Kid's Easter Party on March 30th and the Easter Buffet on April 8th. The Ceremonial is just around the corner on the 5th of May and I am proud to announce that a long time hard worker at the Temple will be Honored as the Class Honoree, and that would just happen to be Herman (Sonny Boy) Stock. Give Herman a pat on the back and best wishes when you see him. Go out and get those candidates so we can have a nice group of New Nobles for Herman's Class. We have started work on the parking lot and are moving right along. Please bear with us as we work in the parking lot and have to deal with less parking for a while. We have extra parking in the Hotel parking lot next door and behind the Temple at the McCurdy for the time being. So please pass this information along to your friends. First Friday Prime Rib Buffet has been so well attended we are now having the Prime Rib Buffet on the 1st and 3rd Fridays. We will soon be getting a visit from the Imperial Potentate Sir Michael G. Severe and his Lady Patty and are making arrangements for this event. They are scheduled to be here on the 22nd of May, so make plans now to attend the dinner in their Honor on the evening of May 22nd. Only a few Temples are Honored each year with a visit from the Imperial Sir and his Lady, so come out and help make them feel welcome. I wish to thank everyone who has come forward this year to help make our Temple one of the best Temples there is. On another note, the Potentate's Book is now out and if you have not got one, stop by the Temple office and ask for one. There is a lot of great information in this book, so pick one up soon. My Book this year is dedicated to everyone that has ever had to deal with any kind of Cancer. Pray for a cure.

5 Hadi Legion of Honor Notes By Curran Wilkinson, Adjutant Greetings from the Hadi Legion of Honor. As we approach the month of April, we discover that one quarter of the year, 2012, is now history. We are 11 days into the spring season which is the time of the year when the creation awakens and starts another period of growth or production. The trees in the forests take on a different hue and will soon be putting out new twigs for the leaves that are to follow. The animals and creatures are preparing nests that will be home to the young they are expecting to create. All in all, this is a period of preparation by the divine creator, where by all of nature comes to life and a new process begins. At Hadi Legion of Honor a new process has been created in which several people have been rewarded for their hard work and dedication to the unit. During an event titled The Leap Year Bash several nobles and ladies were given tokens of appreciation for their hard work and dedication to the unit. Among these, Dale The Hawk Hawkins was awarded with the title of Sergeant of Arms Emeritus. Congratulations Hawk and thanks for all your hard work and dedication to the Hadi Legion of Honor. There are several veteran nobles of Hadi Shrine that do not belong to the Legion of Honor. We welcome you to our unit and invite all of you to become Legion of Honor members. Veteran Shriners who are not active at the present time may join us in The Red Fez at 6:30 P. M. on the 4 th Monday and become active in the unit. Remember, it is an honor to belong to the Legion of Honor. OFFICAL NOTICE!! 6 DRUM CORPS BLASTS By Jerry Minto The lovely season of Spring is now upon us (we hope) and with the blooming flowers and growing grass comes parade season. Let s get those horns, drums, cymbals and uniforms in tip top shape for the upcoming season. It might not be a bad idea to come down for a little practice to work out the Winter kinks. A big Thank You to all the members who got out of bed before dawn to fry sausage for the YMCA s Pancake Days. This is an annual endeavor and I am sure the YMCA appreciates it very much. Also, we wish to thank Jim Scheller for his work in coordinating the effort and to Hadi Shriners for the use of the kitchen and cooking equipment. We need each member to line up your orders for the onion sale. This fundraiser benefits not only the Shriners but also your unit. The Circus Ad Kick-Off will be held on April 19th, so be sure and line up those ads for this years circus book. 7 Hadi Shrine Horse Patrol By Billy Joe Bebout President and Captain of Hadi Horse Patrol Brethren I must sadly inform you that Swinger, one of our Hadi Shrine Circus horse performers, passed away around on Thursday, March 1, He apparently died of a heart attack. He was 25 years old and one of the last two white horses in the unit. His breeding was Tennessee walker and quarter horse mix. Riding him was like sitting in a rocking chair. He was a white gentle giant. Lordy, Lordy the miles my family and I put on him. It didn t matter if we were riding him at our camp in Shawnee National Forest or on the street in a parade, he was always ready to go. I have ridden him all over the country. In Chicago, Indianapolis, Ohio, Boston and Dallas Texas for the opening of the Mesquite Rodeo, just to name a few of the places we have traveled. One of the most important things he has done is carry flags at the opening of the Hadi Shrine Circus. He has carried flags with his sister Snow for 13 years at Roberts Stadium and his last was the new Ford Center. Many of you brothers have brought your families to the back of Roberts Stadium to see the white horses. There was a great pride when a young child wanted to pet a horse for the first time or to sit on one and have their picture taken. Their smiles said it all. Sometimes the parents were happier then the child. I know at the Ford Center this was not permitted and it was a great loss to the young children. At the Shrine Circus at the Ford Center this past November, I was presented with a copy of the magazine entitled White Tops (it is the Circus Fans Association of America) from Past Potentate Paul Egbert. This magazine is widely known and it covered several pictures of acts from Hadi Shrine Circus. One of the photos was me riding Swinger and my other White Horse Snow being ridden by one of the other brother presenting the flags at the start of the Circus at Roberts Stadium November Believe me, I was overwhelmed and please beyond words. I was raised on a farm and worked with horses. I have ridden many good horses but I would consider Swinger a Great Horse. If the good lord wanted to ride, may he saddle up Swinger and carry and American Flag to the Blue here after. Then give old swinger what he always wants (a bucket of grain and a bale of hay). Swinger you will always be missed by the Bebout family and especially me. So long Old Friend and Partner and Happy Trails. Billy Joe Bebout, President & Captain Hadi Horse Patrol PATROL POINTS Rick Ennis-Secretary arabpatrol@hotmail.com Once again, there was over 30 Nobles present at March s meeting. A lot of business was taken care of that evening, and a lot of camaraderie was had. Again, we would like to thank the Oriental Band for attending our breakfast, and I hope we can have as many Patrolmen attend your breakfast on April 15th. On June 2nd, the Hadi Shriners will present Roll n on the River Car and Bike Show. Captain Russell Redmon and Kevin Hazelwood are in charge of parking cars for this event. Help will be needed for this event from all Shriners. Please contact Russell or Kevin if you can help. Well, here it is already April. It has been a busy year already. At the March meeting, we chose to have the Patrol trailer at Shrinersfest. This will be a great chance to make money for our unit. We cannot do this unless we have the support of ALL of the Patrolmen, and their ladies. As you know, in years past, we have done a lot for the Potentate at this event from selling T- shirts and raffle tickets, to working the bierstube, and anything else that is asked of us. This year with us taking on the trailer during Shrinersfest, we will need even more volunteers from the Patrolmen and their ladies. As you know the onions will be arriving soon. If you need some please contact me at to place your order. We have a set amount of onions to sell, so, call early to get your order in before they are all gone. It is circus time once again!! The ad kickoff starts on April 19th. Our Temple relies on this money to get our circus going. Last year we had a good year with ad sales, so lets make this year as good, if not better than, last year. As you know, this is our Temples 100th year anniversary for the Hadi Arab Patrol. We will be having a celebration for this momentous event on August 4th. Please join us in celebrating this special occasion. More details to come on food and entertainment. Please keep sick Nobles that can not be with us in your thoughts and prayers. We wish for them a speedy recovery. In closing, take a moment to remember those last three important points in our Shriners Creed: As individuals we pledge ourselves to integrity, virtue and nobility of character. Our intentions will be honorable, our relations will be trustworthy and our spirits forgiving of each other. Picture Courtesy of As brothers we offer each other fraternal affection and respect. Together we will support each other in adherence to this creed, so that we and our communities will be the better because of our fraternity and its principals. As Shriners we look beyond ourselves to serve the needs of other, especially children who cannot help themselves. We believe Shriners Hospitals to be the world s greatest philanthropy, and we covenant with each other to support its temples of mercy with spirit, time, talent and means. Circus Fans Association of America Commit to be active in your unit for 2012!! HAVING FUN & HELPING KIDS I AM PROUD TO BE A SHRINER 7

This will be a general meeting to launch the upcoming PR and Marketing plan as well as the Shrinersfest Button Drive and Gate Workers needs. Scuttlebutt in slang usage means rumor or gossip, deriving from the nautical term for the cask used to serve water (or, later, a water fountain).[1][2] The term corresponds to the concept of a water cooler in an office setting, which at times becomes the focus of congregation and casual discussion. Water for immediate consumption on a sailing ship was conventionally stored in a scuttled butt: A butt (cask) which had been scuttled by making a hole in it so the water could be withdrawn. Since sailors exchanged gossip when they gathered at the scuttlebutt for a drink of water, scuttlebutt became Navy slang for gossip or rumours "What is a nautical Hammerfer?" Answer: Driving nautical nails... Don t miss the Boat! FREE ALCOHOL CERTIFICATION CLASS Tuesday, May 29th at 6:00PM Valid Drivers License & Liquor License Required Call Chad to Register: Ext. 2 8

12 Hot Sands Vol. 87 No. 4 April 2012 A Wild Party! by Potentate Phil Smith Yes, on the 3rd of March we had one fantastic Wild Game Feast! What a feast it was, with succulent food, large crowd, hard working Nobles and great band. I am so proud to be the Potentate of a Temple that could make close to 300 people happy and to see everyone enjoying themselves. The party was so good, no one wanted to leave. This says something about the fine work done by all the volunteers who donated, cleaned and cooked the food and saw that they made the crowd feel very welcome. All these I give my thanks too and also to the Aides who helped by serving and bussing the tables. I thank all those who made this the fine event it was and I know with your help the year of 2012 will be a great one. Walk of Friends These bricks will be used to build a patio around the flag pole in the courtyard of the Hadi Temple.
