GHS members, friends, South County neighbors and others are invited to be part of this exciting, new initiative. Dedicated to the continual preservation of the Galesville Heritage Museum, the GHS has worked diligently over the past couple of years to update the museum interior, including upgrading the quality and scope of our historical displays. The GHS is now focused on updating the museum s building and grounds. One key element of the museum s exterior facelift is to improve the access and aesthetics of the existing museum pathways. In concert with Maryland Historical Trust guidance and in accordance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations, the current oyster shell pathway will be replaced with an attractive, safe all brick walkway. The walkway will ease access from the street and both parking lots. To participate in this new initiative, you are invited to purchase one or more engraved bricks for prominent display along the Pathway to Memories. Each engraved brick may be purchased for a $100 donation, a portion ($75) of which is a tax-deductible donation. Three lines of text (maximum 16 characters per line, including spaces) can be etched on each brick. The engraving may take many forms, including your family name, the name and birth date of a child or grandchild, the name of a departed loved one or even the identity of your business establishment. The GHS s initial goal is to sell 300 engraved bricks. You will be receiving a letter and form to fill out in the mail. Please return your form and donation by October 1. A dedication of the new Pathway to Memories is tentatively planned for Sunday, November 4. The GHS will hold annual drives, providing more opportunities to purchase additional bricks. Thank you for your support of the Galesville Heritage Society Pathway to Memories initiative. Your donations will enhance the museum and expand museum visitation, preserving our heritage for years to come.

Edward Smith, the eldest of the brothers, began a business building piers around the West River. Smith Brothers, which grew to include six brothers and a partner, became legendary for their hard-work and high quality. In the 1950 s, the State Roads Administration of Maryland tapped Smith Brothers as one of its leading contractors, and for half a century they built and repaired many of the highway bridges in Maryland. Today, Jeff Smith handles the day-to-day business with operations manager, Preston Hartge. 4 Page 4 Galesville Tidings 4TH Of July Parade Recap Our annual Independence Day Parade was bigger than ever this year with many new and returning participants. The annual event kicked off at 1:00 with a clear sky and high temperatures that matched the spirits. The appreciative crowds lined the flag adorned parade route down Main Street and the tight return west by way of Benning Road. Our parade is always a crowd pleaser, with both participants and spectators coming from near and far to enjoy the event. The 4 th of July Parade is one of the many events throughout the year that our community relishes. It is a throwback to a simpler time when a parade was a great way to show your pride in the community and celebrate how wonderful it is to live in Galesville. As always, the Galesville Volunteer Fire Crew, the Galesville and other nearby stations of the AA County Fire Department led the way with engines and joining in. Uncle Sam made his yearly appearance sharing the spotlight with a float in recognition of the 200 th anniversary of Fredrick Douglass birth. After the Parade, the Galesville Community Center gave out a Fredrick Douglas biography to the youngsters and provided hamburgers and hot dogs to the large crowd that gathered at the center. Old cars outnumbered the old tractors this year, with everyone enjoying their annual appearance. Our parade always has a good representation of old cars and tractors from the last century. We had a Model-T and an Model-A this year and we had some newer models too. Local organizations showed off their float building skills and peppered spectators with candy to the delight of the kids along the route. Many thanks to Jean Trott as this year s Parade Grand Marshall. A big thanks goes to Jim Chandler for organizing this year s parade and the rest of the volunteers and all the participants for making the parade a great success.

5 Volume 17, Issue 3 Page 5 Galesville Heritage Museum Events Recap Celebrating West River Market on Sunday June 10 Keeping with tradition of Kolb s Store, the West River Market was the hub of the Galesville community, providing essential staples, but most importantly, handdipped ice cream! The Market was also a gathering place to meet friends and neighbors and get caught up on daily life and a little gossip. What a special time all our friends and visitors had sharing their countless memories of West River Market. Hot dogs, chips and, of course, ice cream was served. If you could not attend and would like to contribute your memories of this Galesville history, please your memories to galesvillemuseum@gmail.com. Ice Cream Social The rain didn t damper the desire for ice cream. In spite of the bad weather, the Ice Cream Social on July 22 was a great success. Adults and children enjoyed making their own sundaes with toppings provided by the Society and Holly Clark. After enjoying your sundae, you could sample cookies and brownies. As they do countless times, many thanks to Cynthia Czubat and Susie Cosden for making the Ice Cream Social a fun way to raise money and at the same time build community spirit. A big Thank You to Cynthia Czubat and Susie Cosden for making the Ice Cream Social a fun event. Galesville Community Square Dance Everyone is invited to attend the upcoming Square Dance & Potluck Dinners- September 29 at Christ Church Parish Hall in Owensville & December 1 at the Galesville Memorial Hall and supported by the West River Improvement Association (WRIA). The optional Potluck Dinners will start at 5:45 PM followed by family-friendly dancing at 7:00 PM and then, from 8:30 to 10:00 PM, there will be more challenging dancing. With Gratitude: Emily H. Peake Adults: $10, Ages 5 to 17 years: $5, and under 5 can come in for free. For more info, call or communitysquaredance.wordpress.com Emily H. Peake, a longtime resident of Riva passed away in December A generous bequest was made by Emily to the Galesville Heritage Society. Emily was a teacher at the South County Center and a member of St. Anne s Cemetery Committee and the Annapolis History Consortium. The Galesville Heritage Society is deeply grateful for this bequest. The Galesville Heritage Society has acquired two laser sailboats. Anyone interested in purchasing the lasers, please contact Jim Chandler at or jim20765@verizon.net.
