1 Volume 8 Issue 9 September 2017 From the Commander Here we are close to the end of summer and the start of fall. Those of us at the post and all of the elected members have been working on getting the building ready for winter. We cleaned the kitchen, painted the fire lanes, put a new down spout on the back gutter, and are going to replace some bad siding. Now that the new events committee is in charge, they now have a lot planned for the next year and we hope that you make plans to come in to have fun with us at YOUR post. If you are not sure of what is going on, check the "Scuttlebutt" or come into the post and check out the new television that is dedicated to listing the latest news and upcoming events. In closing, all members that have not come to the post lately, should make it a point to come in and see what is new! We think that you will be surprised. In This Issue From the Commander From the President From the Canteen Manager Classifieds Officers Auxiliary Officers Event Flyers Commander Terry Clark From the Auxiliary President From the Events Committee September Calendar The Back Page Canteen Menu Here we are in the Football Season! Yippee! I am so excited to see how my favorite team season. So come on down to the Post and have some fun! And of course all of the other teams do this Now, for some Auxiliary business: During out last meeting, August 24 th, the members that were present voted on the following expenditures: We donated $ for this year s Stand Down taking place in September. We donated $ to the Veteran s Administration Volunteer Services (VAVS) form them to purchase new t-shirts-sweats-socks for incoming and for long term patients For the SRO (single residence occupancy) and Freedoms Path we agreed to buy Wal-Mart gift cards bus passes movie passes sweats socks and some other items for them and their pantry. Here are some dates to remember: September 23, 2017 The VFW Auxiliary will be having a Poppy Drive during the Car Show. All donations will go towards our Relief Fund to help Veterans & their Families. September 28, 2017 This is our normal meeting night. However, due to a lot of the officers being out of town there will be no meeting that night. October 07, sewing bee to complete wheel chair bags. Also, make ponchos and do rags. From 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 pm. Bring your sewing machine and if you do not sew believe me there will be plenty of things to do! October 27, 2017 Our regular monthly meeting at 7pm Continued on Page 3
2 Well here we are, another summer behind us. It seemed to fly by! Nevertheless lets welcome September. I only have a couple of updates from the Canteen this month. From the Canteen Manager We tried serving and having available our steak bites and battered steak strips. However the demand for them didn't keep up with the preparations we had to keep in the kitchen. We ended up with more waste than sales. So we will be occasionally offering them during our weekday lunch specials. I will have Tina get that information out via Facebook. I've also mentioned that our Saturday night meal special will be some sort of a smaller meal. That has seemed to be working so we will continue with that, unless we have a celebration that falls on a Saturday. I also need to make mention that we need to only have our staff members in our kitchen during our dinner service. I know that you are only trying to help our bartenders but unless you are signed up to volunteer for dish washing you are not allowed in the kitchen. I hope you understand the importance of this matter. Please keep in mind that if you do want to help with volunteering in the kitchen you need to have a current food handler card posted. They are obtainable online for a minimal amount. We can always use your help doing dishes on Friday nights and it is so appreciated!! Our new Events Committee has a few things planned for us this month. First will be the Labor Day Luau on Monday the 4th. The Committee/Post will provide the meat and the side dishes will all be potluck. So please bring a dish to share. The cost will be $10.00 to cover the cost of the meat. We will also hold another Corn Hole Tournament that day too. It's a fun day so don't miss out!! Next they will be celebrating the Air Force Birthday on Saturday the 16th, dinner will be lasagna starting at 5pm and ceremonies beginning at 7:15 followed by the cake cutting and our always fun loving Benny. Our last Event of September is the 2nd Annual Car Show on Sunday the 23rd. Car/bike registration is only open to members of our VFW, AMVETS and their Auxiliaries. Stop on by and grab a burger or hotdog enjoy music of the "good ole days" and place your vote for your favorite car/bike. My last thing to mention is something that some may have already heard of.. You've gotta love social media:/. It has been publicly brought to my attention that some members of the Post are upset with the voice and noise level during the karaoke hours. This is not something I will try to control but I will make mention that the Post has tried many different types of entertainment and hands down Benny fills our seats. We appreciate him for all of his "extra" things and time he gives us, out of love and kindness. I also feel that our karaoke has become a background type of music for our weekends. I sing and I feel that those members and guests that want to sing, do it for their entertainment and not acknowledgement. We do have some very good singers, thank goodness:). However we are a VFW and many of our members merely are here to be social and meet new people. We have new members joining daily. And I hope you all greet them in a welcoming manner. I try my best to say hello and remember everyone but I can't expect that of everyone. I do require that of our employees and volunteers. I don't feel any of us are going out of the way to be rude during someone singing. Our building is small and we need to deal with that! Benny has worked with me in ways to control his sound level so others can hear to talk. And I think we have found a valid balance of that. If anyone has any issue that they want addressed please don't hesitate to contact me personally. My promise to you all is I will do what I can to resolve any problems that arise. I wish you all a fantastic month and pray that God blesses us all. Michelle Rex My name is Rob Hunt. I am a retired US Army First Sergeant and VFW Lifetime Member # Standard Parking Plus is the largest parking management company in the United States. Locally we manage parking at PDX and at a few locations downtown. I was recently hired by SP Plus to help solve their hiring problems. Basically, we have many open positions and not a lot of applications. We all know that veterans are the best possible choice for employers. I am reaching out to you directly to ask for your help in getting more vets to apply. If you know of any veterans looking for a job, please give them my contact info or direct them to our careers website Thank you for your time. 3 From the President Continued from Page 1 We will also be having our Annual Christmas Bizarre. Again this year we will be selling tables for $10.00 (1 small) $15.00 (2-small). So stay tuned for further information on that. The VOD (Void of Democracy) and Patriots Pens theme are out. So, here they are: VOD Theme is - American History: Our Hope for the Future Patriots Pen Theme is- America s Gift to My Generation Youth Essay s Theme is- What does a veteran mean to me? (this is run by the Auxilary) Stay tuned for more information from the Post side. We have new tiled bracelets with all of the services along with three new ones. If anyone is interested please see me for them. We are selling them for $7.00 each and the proceeds will go to our Veterans National Services. If anyone has any community service to report for the months of July & August please give me the information. You can always use one of the forms towards the back on our wall. Please feel free in contacting me if you have any questions and or concerns. Best Regards Jenifer Harris / The Bottom Line George Tiny Whitecloud Bottom Line The bottom line here is, it doesn't matter who I am or where I come from. The importance is, after I served, "I was allowed to come home". So what I'd like to share is what I've seen and experienced in life, regarding our Brothers and Sisters; the MIA's & the POW's. The ones who were never allowed to come home. When the wife and I were invited to visit the VFW, I tried to familiarize myself with how things were being done to make things flow smoothly ; so we could find a way to help; with hopes of joining. Thankfully, we have now joined and are currently a Life Member family of the VFW Post # 7824 here in Vancouver Washington. So when we began attending the Post, I started nosing around to see how we could help without stepping on anyone's toes, so after reading all the walls, it didn't take long to see that a very important matter had sadly been over-looked. I realized the MIA's & POW's table was being neglected. The Brothers and Sisters were not being honored properly or routinely scheduled according to written orders. When I mentioned this to one of the Brothers, (who's father hadn't come home) he and I started a routine of doing honors to his father and the other MIA's & POW's ourselves. So you might say the bottom line is, what we found as mistakenly being overlooked and forgotten, we have taken to a whole new level with the Post Ships Participation. What started with two Brothers and a simple half slice of fresh lemon, is now become a regular routine in the Post's weekend agenda here at our VFW Post #7824. With the help and direction from our district commander Dale Rex we now have close to a 90 percent participation. Our hopes are to see this spread nation wide to all of our nation s VFW's; all the way to our presidents recognition.. So we'd like to invite each and every one of you Brothers & Sisters (& visiting guests) from across our great nation to come and join us to pay respect to these never to be forgotten ones, the MIA's & POW's. Every Friday and Saturday evening with total silence in the Post, around 9:15 PM we have our special moment, to remember and pay honor to our Brothers & Sisters, the MIA's & POW's who haven't come home. 11 VFW 7824 Scuttlebutt 400 N Andresen Rd Vancouver, WA USA PLACE POSTAGE HERE The Back Page with Nelson Happy Labor Day!! Wow, soon it will be Christmas. I hope this edition finds everyone doing well. I would like to use this to post a public service announcement for all our members and friends. This upcoming time of year people do a lot of shopping, both online as well as in-store purchasing. In an attempt to keep you and your money safe, here are a few tips to follow, not only during this time of year, but all throughout the year. I am going to do this in a 3 or 4 part series, this month I want to focus on scams. I receive a lot of , most of it junk, and lots of times it is phishing attempts. The latest is one that could come to anyone, and could cause problems for anyone using Amazon or other online outlets for purchases. I received this this week: See the above . The first hint that it is not a real is the address; Amazon <cqcollin@purdue.edu> Notice that is from Purdue University and not from an Amazon server. The second hint would be that they are asking you to click on a link and update profile or security information. NO financial or merchant organization will ask you to do that, and if they do, drop them. Remember, if an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Also, NEVER click on a link in an where you don t know where it came from and especially if you were not expecting it. Stay safe and have a Great September.
