March 14, 2002 JEREMIAH BARTON S GRANDCHILDREN Allen Barton [Information from research by Allen Barton, Arlene Frodey, Jim Barton, Doug Losty, (descendants), Lauraine Horbak ( Sullivan Co. Genealogist), and Adolph Law Voge s research in the 1920s. JEREMIAH BARTON ( ) and his wife Elizabeth had eight known children: 1. Jesse, , m. Jane B 2. Joshua, ,. Sarah Wiesemer 3. Susan, 1799-?, m. William Denike 4. William, , m. Eleanor Jane Galloway 5. James, 1804-? 6. Daniel H., , m. Nancy Dickinson 7. Henry, , m. Sally Ann Bates 8. Mary, ? m. Philip Root 1. CHILDREN OF JESSE BARTON, and JANE B. Jesse s parents lived in Yorktown, Westchester Co, NY from at least Jesse lived in Cortland Twp, Westchester Co. in1820, in 9 th Ward of NYC in 1830 and 1840, moved to Liberty Twp., Sullivan Co., NY by Children: 1. Son, b (not in census list 10 years later) 2. Daughter, b (not in census list 10 years later) 3. Son, b Son, b Ebenezer, b Daughter, b : Jesse and Jane were listed by the census in Yorktown, Westchester Co, NY with a boy and a girl under 10, hence born : Jesse and Jane were listed by the census in 9 th Ward of NYC with a boy aged 5-9 (born ), and two boys and a girl under 5 (born ). One of these 5-9 year old boys would have been Ebenezer, listed as age 23 in the 1850 census and hence born c The two previous children are not listed they would have been years old. They might have died or stayed with other relatives in Yorktown or married and moved out. 1840: Jesse Barton listed in 9 th ward of NYC [Roll 303, p. 5] NEED TO KNOW ACTUAL HOUSEHOLD COMPOSITION
2 1842: Jesse Barton of NYC bought 20 acres in Liberty Twp, Sullivan Co. and some time thereafter moved there. 1850: Census lists Jesse Barton, age 60, farmer in Liberty Twp., with wife Jane, 56, and son Ebenezer, 23, farmer, deaf and dumb. No other children listed : Jesse died. [Voge notes - no further details.] 1855 NY State census lists widow Jane Barton living in Liberty Twp. with two grandchildren who had lived there for two years (hence since 1853): Charles A. Barton, b. c in NY County, 2 years in Sullivan Co. Emma C. Barton, b. c in NY County, 2 years in Sullivan Co. Ebenezer not listed in the household or elsewhere in Sullivan County. Since Ebenezer was born in 1827 and would have been only 15 when Charles A. was born he is unlikely to be the father. The father of the two grandchildren, who were born in NYC, must be one of Jesse and Jane s other sons shown in the 1820 or 1830 censuses. He may have sent the children to his mother in the country, or they may have been orphaned. [Lauraine Horbak could not find these children listed in any family in NYC in 1850 census.] No listing of any of these in Sullivan County in the 1860 census census found an Ebenezer Barton, age 35 (approximately right for one born in 1827), a bookbinder, married with three children, living with his mother-in-law and brother-in-law Hollister in the 9 th ward of NY City. It would help to know where this and our Ebenezer were born. [In the early 20 th century deaf people were often trained as printers on the theory that they could work well in the noisy environment of a printing plant; but as far as I know bookbinding is not associated with the deaf.]
3 2. CHILDREN OF JOSHUA BARTON, AND SARAH WIESEMER [Voge has her maiden name as Acker and cites NYC VR # Lauraine Horbak has land records which identify Sarah with the Wiesemer family.] Joshua s parents lived in Yorktown, Westchester Co, NY from at least 1800; his father Jeremiah left him a piece of land where Joshua had a house when he died in Joshua lived in Yorktown in 1820, in 9 th Ward of NYC in 1830 and 1840, moved to Sullivan Co. NY in 1848, moved to Ramapo Twp., Rockland Co. NY in 1859, died there in 1876, buried in Spring Valley, Rockland County. 1. Son, b , probably b. in Yorktown. Possibly Jeremiah, b. 1813, d. Aug , age 66+6 mo, Spring Valley, CT. Buried in New Haven,. 2. Daughter, b Daughter, b Willett, b. 1820, Westchester Co., d. 1893, NYC 5. Daughter, b William, b. 1828, d.? 7. Sarah H., b. c. 1831, m. John Onderdonck, b. Rockland Co Jeremiah Barton II? b. 1813, Yorktown, NY; d. Aug. 25, 1879 in Spring Valley, NY and buried in New Haven, CT. (From death records, New Haven per Doug Losty, a descendant.) Plot bought by a William Barton. Married Maria or Mary b. in NYC, d. [1870s?], in NYC but listed as resident of Spring Valley, NY, and buried in New Haven, CT. in plot bought by a William Barton. A Jeremiah Barton is listed as machinist in New Haven directory [date?] Doug Losty s information. Adolph Law Voge s handwritten notes from his research on Barton genealogy done in the 1920s lists Joshua s children as: Wm Jeremiah m. John Onderdonck [This must be Sarah who married John Onderdonck and lived with Joshua and his wife in Sullivan Co. in 1855.] [This list omits Willett, who appears on another page of the notes, but it suggests that Voge had been informed that Joshua had a son Jeremiah.] Children of Jeremiah II: On another page, Voge has an enigmatic listing on an illegibly headed page of: Children (prob. more) Jeremiah (fine violinist) (to NYC + then New Haven) Delaware Co Mary Carter d (187--) (or Cartier) [presumably Jeremiah s wife]
4 Children: [of Jeremiah and Mary] 5. Mary m. Hine Sep fr. husband. Both Mary and Lillian used Barton ch. Lillian 1. Joshua (oldest) 3. Richard 2. George 4. Isaac 6. William Henry All went to New Haven, Ct. [bracketing Joshua through William Henry] From Barton of Art Sect. N.Y. P. L. (a descendant, bro. Of Bernard Barton, 92 Liberty St., Lawyer. Doug Losty lists his ancestry as Jeremiah Barton, Joshua Barton, Walter Barton, Evelyn Barton Losty. Voge s list certainly sounds like a list of Jeremiah II s children, and includes both a Joshua, whom Doug Losty lists as a son his g-g-g grandfather Jeremiah, and a William H. who could be the cabinet maker, piano and melodium maker whose marriage certificate discovered by Losty lists his birth date as 1844, and also the William Barton who bought the New Haven burial plot for Jeremiah and his wife. Douglas Losty believes that Jeremiah s father was also named Jeremiah, but says he has no positive proof. Since Jeremiah Sr. lived until January, 1816, and had a daughter born in 1812, it is possible that he had yet another son in 1813, but no such son was named in the probate of his widow s estate in I have listed Jeremiah II as a son of the older Jeremiah s second son Joshua, who was listed in the census as having two sons born and living in Yorktown. Joshua was buried in Spring Valley on his death in 1876 at the age of 84. This Jeremiah II died in Spring Valley in 1879, and might have been living there with his father and stayed on after his father died. That he and his wife were sent to New Haven for burial associates them with the New Haven Barton family and with the William who bought their plot. 2. Daughter b , listed in 1820 census in Joshua and Sarah s household in Yorktown and in their 1830 household in NY City. No further information. 3. Daughter b , not listed in 1820 but listed in Willett Barton, b. Feb. 8, 1820, Westchester Co., d in NYC Married Phebe, b in NYC, d in NYC. Children of Willet and Phebe: Isaac Barton, b Emily L. Barton, b or 1846 in NYC.
5 1848: Willett came to Liberty Twp, Sullivan Co. 1850: Census lists Willett Barton, 30, farmer, land worth $1500, with wife Phebe, 26, son Isaac, 13, and daughter Emily, :Willett bought land in Sullivan Co. from William Bradley [Book 29 p 140]. 1855: NY State census shows Willet Barton, 35, b. Westchester Co., 7 year resident; wife Phebe J., 30, b. NY County; daughter Emily L., 9, b. NY County. Isaac, now 18, not listed. 1858: Willett Barton s land in Sullivan Co. sold by court on foreclosure action of Henry McClellan (Book 39 p. 38). He probably moved back to NYC, but does not seem to be in the 1860 census there. 1875: Phebe died Oct 22 in NYC. 1893: Willett died in NYC August 28, age 73, at 122 W. 127 th St. Voge notes that Willett had scroll-sawing factory, presumably in NYC. 5. Daughter, b , listed in household in 1830 census in NY City. 6. William Barton, b. 1828, Westchester Co. Voge s notes say see Richmond Co. slip. His notes are classified by counties, and the researcher in the Library of Congress manuscript collection did not pursue this cross-reference. No further information. It is possible that he was the William Barton who bought the burial plot for his brother and sister-in-law Jeremiah and Maria in New Haven in the 1870s. However, since apparently Jeremiah had a son William Henry, and a William H. was living in New Haven at the time it is more likely that William Henry bought the burial plot for his presumed parents Jeremiah and Maria. 7. Sarah H, b. c. 1831, m. John Onderdonck, b in Rockland Co., 1855 NY State census of Sullivan Co., lists John Onderdonck, 28, b. Rockland Co., 2 year resident, wife Sarah, and son Augustus, 4 mo., living in same house with Sarah s parents Joshua and Sarah, who had lived there since CHILDREN OF SUSAN BARTON b AND WILLIAM DENIKE 1820: U.S. Census lists William Denike and wife living next door to Elizabeth Barton, widow of Jeremiah Barton : Jeremiah s widow Elizabeth died, Surrogate Court records list Susan Denike, wife of William Denike as an heir. William Denike of Sing Sing and his wife released their share of the proceeds of sale of Jeremiah s land, and were paid $ principle and interest for money they had loaned to Susan s mother in They also inherited a bed and chairs belonging to her mother. No information on children would need to check Census for Denike in Sing Sing.

11 make her mark. Eleanor Jane may be been visiting one of her three children living in Woodlawn.
