3 Chapter 19 of the Kenyons of Cattaraugus County, NY John S. (Jr.) and Eliza (Sherman) Kinyon Brother of Madison S. Kinyon Richard L. Kenyon 32 Almond Tree Ln, Irvine CA Nov 3, 2012 John S. Kinyon, Jr. was the first of the nine sons of John S. and Susan (Sheldon) Kinyon. He was born in Rhode Island, May 4th, 1810, according a record made many years later in his family Bible. His grandparents Thomas W. and Sylva Kinyon had already moved to the Town of Sangerfield in Central New York. John's parents soon left Rhode Island as well, and by 1820 were living in the Town of De Ruyter, roughly 15 miles from Sangerfield. The map, below, shows the location of these towns, and others mentioned later. Note that they are in different counties, but separated by comparatively short distances Scale in miles Map showing the towns in central New York where John S. Kinyon and his relatives lived. Grandfather Thomas W. Kinyon appears in the 1814 and 1820 census in Sangerfield (1), moving to Plainfield (2) where in 1832 he applied for his Revolutionary War pension. His son John S. Kinyon, the father of John S. Kinyon Jr., appears in De Ruyter (3) in the 1820 census, and Truxton (4) in 1825 and 1830 censuses. John S. Kinyon Jr. married in Lebanon (6) and after moving west to Cattaraugus County returned about 10 years later to spend the rest of his life in Smyrna (5). Most of his children also lived in Smyrna. On January 1, 1832 the 21 year old John S. Kinyon Jr. married 20 year old Eliza Sherman of the Town of Lebanon. They were married at the residence of her parents by Reverend Levi Gardner. Eliza was born May 3, 1811 in Madison County, New York. She was the daughter of Palmer and Elizabeth (Hoxie) Sherman. Palmer Sherman was the great-great grandson of Philip Sherman. Philip arrived in the United States in 1633, only 13 years after the Pilgrims. He settled 19 John S. Kinyon Jr. page 1

4 first in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Banished in 1637 because of his religious beliefs, he fled to the colony of Rhode Island. There, led by Roger Williams, he was one of the founders of the colonial government, which was the first in the United States to proclaim the separation of Church and State. He was the first Secretary of Rhode Island and remained very active in the government during his lifetime. Eliza had an older sister, Susan, who was married to Parley G. Carver. In 1832, Parley and Susan moved west to Great Valley, Cattaraugus County, New York. Not long after their marriage, John and Eliza also moved to Great Valley, where John farmed 50 acres of land belonging to Parley Carver. It was probably due to John's influence that his brothers Silvester, Madison, Nelson and Matthew also moved to Cattaraugus County. Parley Carver died in Parley's will gave John the option to purchase the 50 acres that he had been farming. About 1842, John and Eliza returned to Madison County, where Eliza's parents lived. They soon moved to the nearby Town of Smyrna where they remained. In contrast, John's brothers continued their westward migration, leaving Cattaraugus County during the period John's farm was located in the northwest corner of the Town of Smyrna, in Section 79. The location was along Pleasant Brook, accessed by what is now State Highway 60. John died October 8, 1889 at the age of 79. He was buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in the Town of Otselic, the next town to the west of Smyrna. His wife Eliza died at the age of 87 on May 4, 1898 and was buried beside her husband. Questions, Corrections and Additions I welcome questions, corrections and additions. I can be contacted at the or postal address at the top of page 1. Acknowledgements Special thanks to Art Cohan of Harlingen, Texas, for help with the Sherman Ancestors, the quality and quantity of which was exceptional. Sources were provided by the Guernsey Memorial Library, Norwich, NY; the Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints, and their Huntington Beach, California, Family History Center; and the Orange County Genealogical Society collection at the Huntington Beach Public Library. Shirley Hegeman of Oneonta, NY, created a map showing town boundaries in Central New York by pasting together photocopies of individual county maps. I enlarged and retouched a section of this map, reproduced on page John S. Kinyon Jr. page 3

6 Sources: John S. Kinyon's Kinyon ancestors: See chapter 18, John S. Kinyon Sr., and Chapter 23, Thomas W. Kinyon. Birth dates for John S. and Eliza: Family Bible of John S. Kinyon. The Bible was published by the U. S. Publishing Company in The present location is unknown, but it was in the possession of Avery Reynolds, Earlville NY, when copied by Miss Lillian Stebbins of Earlville, N.Y. There are three almost identical versions of this copy: 1. NYS DAR Bible Records, vol. 75, pt. 1, pp 24-26, copy at NY State Library. This appears to be the original copy made from the Bible by Miss Lillian Stebbins, a professional copyist. Undated. 2. NYS DAR Bible Records vol. 126, pp 52-54, copy in NY State Library. Copied from Miss Stebbins' record in 1966 by Gertrude Smith. 3. Mrs. Edwin P. Smith, Family Bible Records Found and Copied in Northern Chenango County, New York, Vol. 4, Sherburne, NY, FHL film Copied by the author in 1966 from Miss Stebbins' record. Eliza's Sherman ancestors: The most authoritative source is a 4600 leaf manuscript by Prof. Frank Dexter Sherman, donated to the New York Public Library in 1917, and available on microfilm from the LDS Family History Library (FHL and ). This source is the basis for 1) Roy V. Sherman, Some of the Descendents of Philip Sherman, The First Secretary of Rhode Island, 1968, and 2) Roy V. Sherman, The New England Shermans, The early Shermans have been heavily researched and there are many other sources. Parley Carver: Adams, Historical Gazetteer and Biographical Memorial of Cattaraugus County, New York, Syracuse, 1893, in a biographical sketch of his son Solander Carver, p 695. Parly's wife Susan is identified as Eliza's sister by Roy V. Sherman 1968, cited above. Parley is found living next door to a John Kinyon in the 1835 census for Great Valley, Cattaraugus Co, NY, (the pages are not numbered). The will of Parley Carver (NY Cattaraugus Co Deeds 67:461-2 dated Apr 18, 1836) makes it clear that this John Kinyon is our subject. Places lived: The NY 1855 census gives the county of birth of most of the children. From their known birth dates, I was able to determine approximately when the family moved from one place to another. The family of John S. Kinyon Jr. is found in the census records for Smyrna, Chenango Co., NY, with names and ages of each member, as follows: 1850 p 013; 1855 page illegible; 1860 p 117; 1870 sheet 518; 1880 ED116 p14. Location of John's farm: Atlas of Chenango County New York, compiled by Beach Nichols, Philadelphia, Burial of John S. and Eliza: Guernsey Memorial Library, Norwich, NY, Chenango County Cemeteries, Book 2, Maple Grove Cemetery, Otselic, NY, p 35: Kinyon, Johns S., May 4, Oct 8, 1890 [Bible record is 1889] Eliza Sherman, his wife, May 3, 1811 May 2, [Bible record is d May 4] Children of John S. and Eliza: I have additional information, which I can send on request. 19 John S.
