2 ONONDAGA'S CENTENNIAL. GLEANINGS OF A CENTURY DWIGHT H. (DWIGHT HALL) BRUCE. Publisher: [Boston] : The Boston History Company Vol 1 Town of Pompey, p. 708 David Hinsdell, a native of Salisbury, Conn., born June 30, 1754, lived in Galway, Saratoga county, N. Y., from 1787 to 1795, when he removed to Pompey, and settled on his purchase of one-fourth of lot 6. In September of the year last named, he sent his oldest son, Moses, then eighteen, to Pompey to build a house which the family could occupy the coming winter. The house was completed and the family came on in February, David Hinsdell was the father of twelve children, and died in The names of six of these children are found in the list of scholars who attended Levi Jerome's school in the winter of , taught by Levi Jerome. The Hinsdell homestead passed into possession of Chauncey Hinsdell. Excepting Chauncey and Moses, all the sons removed from the town. Moses bought fifteen acres on lot 17, in 1801, of Mr. Sweet, for which he gave his note, and in the course of time added 500 acres to his purchase. He was the father of ten children, among whom were some of the prominent citizens of the county. Source: Bruce, Dwight H. (Ed.), Onondaga's Centennial. Boston History Co., 1896, Vol. II, pp PERRY H. HINSDELL, "Salina, one of Salina' most practical, progressive and successful farmers, was born in Pompey in 1820, son of Moses and Rachael (Hibbard) Hinsdell, natives of Connecticut, who died in Pompey. The father died in 1857 at the age of 79 and the mother in 1841 at the age of 57. Mr. Hinsdell, after attaining his majority, spent one year in Michigan, then returned east and spent a season codfishing on the Greenland Banks. In 1847 he married Sarah Adams, and has since devoted his time to agricultural pursuits. His first wife died in 1877, leaving five children, two surviving, Cora E. and Samuel W. He afterwards married Mrs. Ellen S. Fenner. Politically he was a Republican, until in 1876 he became convinced that the principles of the party were not what they should be, and since he has worked faithfully for the promulgation of the principles of the Prohibition party, feeling sure that what our great country needs is the votes of honest men to save the youth of our land by giving a death blow to the rum traffic. He hopes the day is not far distant when every saloon door will bear the notice 'Out of business,' and will then feel he has not lived in vain, hoping his action in life may have had some influence in bringing about such a reformation." Hinsdell Was a Popular Resident of Salina A Great Traveler. Perry H. Hinsdell, one of the oldest and best known residents of the town of Salina, died yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Leroy M. [H.] Dyer, on the Cicero plank road. Mr. Hinsdell had been suffering from a weak heart for some time, and two weeks ago his horse ran away and threw him in a snowbank and he was obliged to walk two miles through the snow, which weakened him considerably. Last week he suffered two strokes of paralysis. Mr. Hinsdell was 87 years old and was born at Pompey, and was married twice. In 1847 he married Miss Sarah Adams, who died in Mrs. Ellen S. Fenner, his second wife, died in Mr. Hinsdell was a republican until 1876, when he became an active Prohibitionist. During the last six years he had traveled extensively in the West, each summer visiting nearly every State west of the Mississippi. Funeral services will be held to-morrow afternoon at 2 o'clock and burial will be made privately at Oakwood cemetery. 7 THE PROBLEM OF DETERMINING THE ACTUAL DATE OF DEATH WILLARD SAMUEL HINSDELL HINSDELL In the town of Salina, July 9, 1901, Willard S. Hinsdell, aged 37 years and 7 months, only son of Perry H. and the late Sarah Hinsdell. Funeral at the house on Cicero plank road Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Syracuse, New York, The Post-Standard newspaper, Thursday morning, July 11, 1901 Page 8, Column 6 The above obituary gives July 9 th as the date of death, however Willard Samuel, who was also known as William, was not the ONLY son of Perry and Sarah Hinsdell. He had three brothers who had preceded him in death. The age is also off by one year. It should be 38 years and 7 months. Now this obituary has the family name wrong Hinsdale instead of the correct Hinsdell. This one has the date of death as July 10 th and uses the name William instead of his full correct name. The obituary also gives his age incorrectly, adding 12 years. Both of the above obituaries contain incorrect information. Which is to be believed? The inscription on Willard Samuel Hinsdell s gravestone gives July 9 th as his date of death. It is usually best to go with that which is engraved in stone, the family is paying for that and they will see that it is correct. Hinsdell Genealogy Records docx mfmcgraw@austin.rr.com
