2 John Nield 1 John Nield I, John Nield, was bom at No. 13 Greengate Street, Oldham, Lancashire, England on the 23^*^ of February My father, Luke Nield, was the son of John Nield, the son of William Nield, son of Isaac Nield. My mother Martha Wild was the daughter of Benjamin Wild. My father was bom 1796, October 30 and began work at a cotton mill at 5 years of age. In the years 1843, he first heard the gospel and the same year became a Latter Day Saint, and in a short time was ordained a Priest and began to preach, which brought much persecution as well as joy. My father baptized Joseph, Alice and myself. All were confinned about the time of baptism. Joseph M. Nield, November 18,1844, Alice Nield, January , and John Nield, June 21,1847. On July 18,1852,1 was ordained to the office of Priest by my father and under the hands of his counselors. Joseph and John Whitehead. November 26,1853 my brother Joseph M. Nield married Jane Standering, a member of the Rochdale Branch. They were married at Rochdale Church. Our first child was blessed by it s Grandfather, Luke Nield and was named Orson William. February 26,1854 was ordained to the office of an Elder. Same day my father preached his farewell. Sunday, March 12 we left Oldham and arrived a Liverpool to sail in the R.C. Johnston on the 15^, butwere disappointed, as the vessel had been sold to the govemment to go out to the Crimes with soldiers and supplies. We were detained one month and then sailed in the ship "Marshfield" on the 8^ day of April IMMIGRATION: April 1854; ship Marshfield; passenger list for family; Luke Nield, male, age 57, origin Oldham, strip & peckor maker. Martha Nield, female, age 56, origin Oldham. John Nield, male, age 20, origin Oldham. Sarah Nield, female, age 18, origin Oldham Alice Nield, ifemale, age 18, origin Oldham. 3 John Nield 2 Our baby died when 2500 miles from Liverpool. This was hard to bear. May 29**^ we landed In New Orleans. Stayed in St. Louis 3 days and were well treated bysome Oldham friends. Started up the Missouri and on the 17^^ of June landed near Kansas City. I am sorry to say my dear mother took the cholera and died on the 25*^ of June Started across the plains about the 23'^ of July. Got to Salt Lake City on the of October, somewhat over 8 months from home. October 25^"^ Istarted for Lehi on foot 35 miles. Found James Taylor and family and other Oldham friends who treated me kindly. team backfor the folds and all gotto Lehi on the 29*^. I took Bro. Taylor's February 13^^ my Fathermarried a widow named Mrs. Ann Weeks. October 6,1855 Wm. H. Stott and my sister Alice were married by Pres. Brigham Young in Salt Lake City. June 15^"^ 1855,That evening I was ordained an Apostle ofthe Seventies and a memberofthe 44**^ quorum by Wm. Hyde and underthe hands of all the Presidency of the same quorum. In the Spring of 1858 I moved to Fillmore. Found that my father had been called and started on a mission to the White Mountains. We got into Moroni, Sanpete County on Christmas morning...we stopped till early spring of Then moved to Spring City. In July 1869, My father died. I had moved to Meadow, Millard County in October My brother Joseph's three daughters came from England In the Spring of They are Martha Alice, (Allie), Hannah, Emma Jane. March 7,1879 at Meadow, Millard, Utah Ben Goddard and Martha Alice Nield were married. Witnesses were Sarah Nield, Hannah Nield, and Emma Jane Nield. At this time my oldest son is married, that is John E. Nieldto Jane Parker. They have one child a little boy. Taysom. My oldest daughter, Hannah is also married. Her husband is A. D.

John Nield 3 In 1888 our second son, Joseph L. Nield, had a bad spell of sickness that spring in Star Valley, Wyoming. I was called by telegram to his bedside. I am happy to say he finally recovered.

I am happy to say he finally recovered. Well, this is the place where we took up new houses for myself and wife, and five boys and two girls. We did not move until June I am Justice of the Peace for the Afton Precinct. This is now my sixth year in service in that capacity. The organization of the Star Valley Stake of Zion, I was ordained a High Priest and called and set apart as an alternate member of the High Council. We now have 32 grandchildren and we all live pretty close together and are all members of the Afton Ward, except Lizzie and her family who are members of the Fairview Ward. Am pleased to say that Last June (1901) we all went to Logan to do Temple work there; about thirty of us, all told. My grandson John W. Nield was married in the Temple. The families of our sons Joseph L. and Seth B. Nield had been to the Temple previously. I must here say that my dear wife was left behind on said trip. She had had sicknessand died on the 10^^ June Since her death, I have felt very lonesome, although all my children are very kind to me. I still feel the separation very keenly. I pray to God to help me bear this bereavement as becometh a Saint. Since her death, I have lived some six months with daughter Hannah and family, about 3 months with son James W. and family and am now with son John E. and family. I still retain my house and lots in town and expect to work there this coming summer. I will here say that my grandson, A.D. Taysom left on a mission to the Northern States on the 11^*^ day of February, He is now laboring in the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I will state here the John Broadbent died at Spring City, Sanpete County, Utah July 25, 1903, taken by an epileptic stroke. He was past 68 years old and was the brother of my late wife, Sarah. He was born in England and immigrated and come to Utah in the year 1862 with his parents. They settled in Spring City and lived there until the time of their deaths.

5 John Nield 4 At the Stake Conference held May 17,1902 my name was presented s a member of the High Council to fill a vacancy caused by the removal of Brother Isaac Biglow to Canada. On the 5^*^ of September 1903 Iwas blessed and set a part as a member of the High Council of the Star Valley Stake of Zion by President George Osmond and President A. V. Call at the general Priesthood meeting. I was baptized June 21,1847 and confirmed the following Sunday by Elder Luke Nield. Ordained: Priest; July 18,1852, by Elder Luke Nield. Ordained: Elder, February 26,1854 By Elder John Cocker. Ordained: Seventy; June 4, 1857; by Pres. William Hyde. Ordained: High Priest; August 14, 1892; by Anson V. Call. April 1857, John Nield received his first endowment in the Endowment House at Salt Lake City, Utah and his wife Sarah Broadbent Nield was sealed to him by Heber C. Kimball. (this is a different date than in the Temple records) 2"^ anointing, 19 Oct 1902 Salt Lake Temple. October 9,1902 I married Mrs. Emma Billings and was sealed for time by Elder John R. Winder in the Salt Lake Temple. I found Mrs. Billings in the town of Liberty, Bear Lake, Idaho. She had immigrated form Nottingham, England some four years previous. She was a widow with three children; one a young man named Henry billings, a member of the Church. Said Emma Billings was born at New Lenton, Nottingham, England on February 12, Her other children are still in England. John Nield died 14 December 1913 in Afton Wyoming. DEATH: 1913; Afton, Lincoln, Wyoming; John W. Nield Sr.; male; white; born 23 Feb 1844; age 79 years 9 months 12 days; married; born at England; farmer; father Luke Nield, born at England; mother Martha Wilde, born at England; died 14 Dec 1913; cause of death, senile insanity which he had for 2 years; witness A. J. Taysom from Afton; File no. 89. HEADSTONE: John Nield; bom 23 Feb 1834; died 14 Dec BURRIED: Afton Cemetery, Afton Wyoming.
