1 98. Documentation for Samuel Kerr (1778 to Before 08 Oct 1823) father of Nancy Kerr (1809 to After 1838) Samuel Kerr was born in 1778 in Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of John Kerr and Mary Daugherty.(1) John Kerr was born in 1745 and died October 2, 1807, in Guilford Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.(2) Mary Daugherty was born in 1747 in Peters Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania and died in 1819 in Franklin County, Ohio.(3) John and Mary were married September 16, 1765, in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.(4) The family name is correctly spelled Kerr but is often found to be written as Carr, perhaps because the family pronounced the name using an a instead of an e. The will of John Kerr Sr., probated October 21, 1807, in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, bequethed the following:(5) Son Joseph 400 pounds. Daughter Sarah 400 pounds Daughter Jean 400 pounds Son James 1 Spanish minted dollar. Son John 400 pounds Son Samuel Interest only from 400 pounds Daughter Mary 500 pounds for rest of her life Samuel Kerr probably married a Nancy Guin (or Gwyn) in 1799 in Pennsylvania. Samuel moved from Franklin County, Pennsylvania, where their first son, Orson, was born in 1805, to Franklin County, Ohio, no later than 1807, because Samuel Kerr was listed there as a Justice of the Peace in that year.(6) The remaining children of Samuel and Nancy Kerr probably were all born in Franklin County, Ohio. The children of Samuel Kerr as listed in his will dated October 8, 1823, in Franklin County, Ohio, were:(7) 1) Orson Kerr age 18 years 2) Nancy Kerr age 14 years 3) Clarissa Kerr age 11 years 4) Jackson Kerr age 4 years 5) Robert Kerr age 8 years 6) Joseph Kerr age 16 years 7) Samuel Kerr age 9 years 8) Elijah Kerr age 6 years Additional information on the children of Samuel Kerr indicates the following: 1. Joseph Kerr, born about 1807 (based on his age in the will of Samuel Kerr) 2. Samuel Kerr, born about 1814 (based on his age in the will of Samuel Kerr) 3. Robert Kerr, born about 1815 (based on his age in the will of Samuel Kerr)
2 4. Elijah Kerr, born about 1817 (based on his age in the will of Samuel Kerr) 5. Clarissa Kerr, born about 1812 (based on her age in the will of Samuel Kerr) 6. Nancy Kerr, born about 1809 (based on her age in the will of Samuel Kerr) Nancy, daughter of Samuel and Nancy Kerr, married Thomas Gouty on October 14, 1830, in Vermillion County, Indiana.(8) Thomas Gouty (pronounced as gow like cow and tee as in a golf tee) was born about 1802, in Caroline County, Maryland. According to the book Gessie, Indiana, The First One Hundred Years , "Henry, Thomas, and Zechariah came to Indiana in Thomas Gouty was married 3 times and had children by all three. His first wife was Nancy Carr, his second wife was Elizabeth Stutler and his 3rd wife was Catherine Hoobler. (9) The first child of Thomas Gouty and Nancy Kerr was named Clarissa.(10) We are confident that Nancy Kerr Gouty named her first daughter after her younger, and only, sister.(11) Clarissa Gouty was born July 5, 1832, in Highland Township, Vermillion, Indiana, and died April 7, 1875, in Deerfield, Vernon, Missouri. She married John Sampson Chezem ( ) and had a child named Sarah Ellen Chezem, ).(12) Clarissa Kerr was born September 27, 1813, and that she died February 11, She married Isaac Demorest, his second wife, on October 24, 1833, probably in Franklin County, Ohio.(13) Children (Gouty) of Thomas Gouty and Nancy Kerr, all born in Indiana: i. Clarissa Gouty, born July 5, 1832 in Indiana(14) ii. Elias B. Gouty, born September 11, 1833, in Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana, and died April 18, 1915, in Vermillion County, Indiana(15) iii. Mary Gouty, born about 1836 in Indiana and died April 4, 1857(16) iv. Eleanor Gouty, born about 1838 in Indiana(17) v. John Russell Gouty, born about 1840 in Indiana and died in 1907(18) Nancy (Kerr) Gouty, first wife of Thomas Gouty, apparently died sometime before May 31, 1840, the date when Thomas Gouty married his second wife, Elizabeth Stutler, in Vermillion County, Indiana.(19) Elizabeth Stutler, second wife of Thomas Gouty, apparently died sometime before June 28, 1849, when Thomas married his third wife, Catherine Hoobler.(20) Thomas and Catherine were married in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois.(21) Note: Be careful not to confuse Vermillion County, Indiana, with Vermilion County, Illinois. The Indiana spelling has two l s and the Illinois County has one l. The counties are adjacent and separated by the state line. 7. Orson Kerr, born April 19, 1805, in Franklin, Pennsylvania.(22) He married Cynthia Clawson, December 5, 1828, in Fountain County, Indiana.(23) She died in 1875 in Tippecanoe, Indiana.(24) A biographical sketch of Orson Kerr includes the following: ORSON KERR, a prosperous and highly respected farmer of Tippecanoe County, is a Pennsylvanian by birth, born April 19, 1805, a son of SAMUEL KERR, deceased. He was reared a farmer, which occupation he has followed principally through life, and his education was obtained in the pioneer schools of Franklin County, Ohio, to which county his parents removed when he was a boy. He came to Indiana in 1827, settling in Fountain County, this State, where he was married December 28, 1828, to MISS CYNTHIA CLAWSON, a daughter
3 of THOMAS CLAWSON, who was one of the old and honored pioneers of Fountain County. MR. KERR became a resident of Tippecanoe County, Indiana, in 1835, in which year he settled on his present farm on section 22, Jackson Township. He was bereaved by the death of his wife in 1875, who had shared with him the vicissitudes of life for nearly fifty years. (25) An Orson Carr is listed in 1830 Fountain County, Indiana, census as age 20 to 30, also one female age age 15 to 20, and one female under five years of age.(26) An Orson Carr also is listed in the 1840 Tippecanoe County, Indiana, census.(27) Orson Kerr owned land adjacent to Thomas Gouty as shown on the map of the First Land Owners of Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana, and as documented by U.S. Land Records.(28) Land records indicate Thomas and Orson both owned land in Section 17, Township 19 North, Range 9 West, Meridian 2nd PM, State of Indiana, County of Vermillion. This probably is the land that appears to be adjacent for the two of them on the map of the First Land Owners of Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana. The previous discussion concerning Orson Kerr leaves no doubt that he was the Orson Kerr listed in the October 8, 1823, Franklin County, Ohio, will of Samuel Kerr and that 1) he was the brother of the Nancy Kerr who married Thomas Gouty; 2) he was the brother of the Clarissa Kerr listed in the Samuel Kerr will; and 3) he was the uncle of Clarissa Gouty, the first daughter born to Thomas and Nancy Kerr Gouty. 8. Jackson Kerr, born in 1819 (based on his age in the will of Samuel Kerr)(29) The death certificate for Andrew J. Kerr indicates he died on 26 August 1903 and was 84 years old and that he died in Montgomery County, Indiana.(30) He married Nancy Sayers on April 22, 1849, in Tippecanoe County, Indiana.(31) An obituary listing dated August 28, 1903, indicates his place of death as Montgomery County, Indiana, and burial at Wheeler's Grove Cemetery.(32) A biographical sketch of a Robert Floyd Kerr indicates that his father was Andrew J. (Jackson) Kerr and that his grandfather was Samuel Kerr: ROBERT FLOYD KERR, A. M., is one of the most influential citizens of Brooking, who has always shown an unselfish interest in furthering the intellectual and material progress of its people. He was born in Sugar Grove, Tippecanoe County, Indiana, April 12, 1850, and a son of Andrew J. and Nancy (Sayers) Kerr. Andrew J. Kerr was born in Franklin County, Ohio. His father, Samuel Kerr, came from Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, and was of Scotch-Irish lineage, his ancestors having immigrated prior to 1740 and located a Chambersburg. John Kerr, one of the immigrants, was a sergeant of the Pennsylvania militia during the Revolutionary war. He was taken prisoner at the battle of Long Island, but exchanged after some time."(33) There clear evidence from the above biographical sketch that Andrew Jackson Kerr was: 1) the son of Samuel Kerr of Franklin County, Ohio; 2) that Samuel Kerr came from Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, to Franklin County, Ohio; 3) that the father of Samuel Kerr and the grandfather of Andrew Jackson Kerr served in the American Revolution as a soldier; and 4) that Andrew Jackson Kerr must have been the Jackson Kerr listed in the 1823 will of Samuel Kerr and was a brother of Nancy Kerr who married Thomas Gouty. The evidence to identify the Nancy Kerr who married Thomas Gouty as the daughter of Samuel Kerr of Franklin County, Ohio, whose will was dated 08 October 1823 is substantial and sufficient.

Older: Two Notes appear at the bottom of the recorded listing for the Samuel Kerr will. Each of the two notes appear to have been added by the authors, Rings, Tipton, and Obetz, to the original estate paper record. One note regards Clarissa Kerr and the second note regards Samuel Kerr, father of Clarissa. It is my opinion that there was no woman named Nancy Chenoweth that Samuel Kerr could have married. In researching the Chenoweth genealogy, there is individual named Nancy Chenoweth to be found. The likely spouse of Samuel Kerr appears to be a Nancy Gwynn or Guin. More research needs to be undertaken by the author related to the issue of the spouse of Samuel Kerr.)
