1 Arranged by county, page and dwelling. "ALFORDS" IN THE 1870 CENSUS OF VERMONT Jan 2009 For most subjects the age is expressed in years immediately after the sex entry. In some cases - particularly with infants - the age is exp ressed in mo nths in which case the age column is blank. W hen the age is expressed in months it is in the next seldom used column immediately after age. In 1870 the census taker was also supposed to record the month of birth and that is shown, in the next column if it was reported. Color is shown after the birthplace (BP). It is assumed to be white unless otherwise specified. Birthplace is shown with the approved postal abbreviations for states in the U.S. Foreign places were: CD = Canada. More data was collected in 1870 than in any prior year. The information is coded as follows: S = in school this year. Next is the month married this year if appropriate and reported. R = can't read and W= can't write. V = eligible to vote. If either of the parents of the subject was foreign born then an F denotes the father was and an M that the mother was. When data was not reported for the above look for a '_' in that space. Microfilm is National Archives Series M593. Roll numbers are identified in each family header. "Block protect" has been used to keep data elements together. T hat may cause some extra white space in some cases. Headings not meant to line up exac tly over the data but rather to give position relationship CALEDONIA COUNTY VERMONT East Hard wick Post O ffice Hardwick Caledonia County Page 98 - House Family M/F Roll Date Enumerated: Aug George C.
