2 May 2006 Utah Purchasing News Page 2 President s Message I encourage all of us the stay current in our profession. We have received great instruction during our Purchasing and Supply Management month activities. Now take the time to look at the March 2007 issue of Inside Supply Management read the article titled (on page 10-11), Nurturing Emerging Talent. The author is Ben Graham, the vice president of finance, sales and supply chain for Bell Incorporated in South Dakota). He suggests that, leadership is not about filling a position, but finding and nurturing the appropriate leader who wants the responsibility. There s a proverb: A volunteer is worth 20 pressed men. Mr. Graham was asked or assigned to identify and nurture the next leaders in his corporation. He was to step back from the day-to-day tasks to both identify and nurture the next leaders. If he had not gotten the assignment, he may not have had time to focus on such a task. He now feels nurturing is business imperative rather than just a task. For any business to succeed in the long term, nurturing the next generation of leaders is imperative. NAPM Utah s by-laws are set-up in a similar fashion to accomplish this business imperative. For example, we appoint our experienced leaders to select individuals to be our emerging officers. Here are three key things for a volunteer to be successful: 1. A time commitment. 2. A strong desire to learn how best to contribute and serve. 3. Nurturing from an experienced leader. As President of NAPM Utah, I have personally seen more desire from our volunteers this past year, but overall we have had less time available to serve. We must make every minute count where possible. I ve seen our past presidents and others mentor and nurture our volunteers in ways that help us accomplish more in less time. Much of this mentoring goes on behind the scenes. I believe it is one of our greatest strengths as an association. It is truly imperative that we continue to nurture the next generation of leaders whether we are talking about our association or our places of business. Warm regards, Jeff Palmer, C.P.M.
3 May 2007 Utah Purchasing News Page 3 Message from the Pro-D Over the last two years, I have had the extreme pleasure of being the Professional Development Chairman for NAPM-Utah, but the time has come for me to step down, and let another have that honor. I certainly can t claim all the credit, either. I ve had immeasurable help from people like Susan Maass, Phil Johnson, and of course some great support from our leaders Jeff, Julia, and Patti. Know, though, that I step down, but not out. In the coming months, I ll be taking over the website from Bryan, and we ll let another take charge of the Pro-D. That being said, we finish the year off with a bit of a bang. Most every purchasing job out there requires dealing with freight companies in some manner or another, and all these freight companies have these strange and obscure codes which I know actually MEAN something. Well, John Fry will be here to explain to us how that system works. Mr. Fry is the global logistics contracts manager for the LDS Church, and will be able to help us understand this beast we call freight with a lecture titled Transportation: The last savings frontier. After our dinner, we ll spend a few moments inaugurating our new members and handing out some certificates of appreciation.and then you can go home to watch Smallville. Take care, and I ll see you on Thursday! --Steven Toastmasters Area 42 Recognizes International Speech and Evaluation Contest Winners Salt Lake City, Utah, March 30, 2007 A speech contest was held recently for Toastmasters District 15 Area 42. International Speech contestants created five to seven minute speeches which were then presented before a panel of judges. Each contestant was evaluated on the following criteria: speech development, effectiveness, speech value, physical appearance, voice, manner, and grammatical correctness. In the evaluation contest, contestants listened to a 5 to 7 minute speech and then were given the opportunity to provide constructive feedback. The feedback was evaluated by the judges for organization, specific suggestions, and presentation including body language and vocal variety. With the conclusion of the contest and the counting of the judges ballots under the direction of Chief Judge LaMont Snarr and Toastmasters District 15 Governor Susan Baer, it is with great celebration that Area 42 Governor Jacob Budd announces Steven Cherecwich, of Weber

11 May 2007 Utah Purchasing News Page 11 NAPM-Utah County Central Utah Branch Wed. Lunch Meeting 04/18/07 At Ruby River in Provo Greetings from the Central Utah Branch >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Thanks to all those who attended the Provo Meet the Candidates luncheon on Apr 18 th. We appreciate you taking the time to support this election year s candidates, eight of which were able to attend the meeting and make a short presentation to the membership. There were a total of 40 members present. One of our newest members, Oskar Munguia, attended from Nature s Way Products. Jeff Parkinson, also from Nature s Way Products, was not able to attend. Cynthia Vaillancourt is another new member, from Novell, Inc., and was not able to join us this time. Welcome to each of you! The meeting proceeded as follows: - Susan Maass welcomed the members, Officers and candidates. - Julia Tumanuvao presented a card for the members to sign for Cheryl Ransom, the Communication & Certification Chair, who is recovering from surgery. - Jeff Palmer presented the Summary of Changes Made to the Constitution, which were previously presented and voted on at the Apr 12 th dinner meeting. Julia made a motion to accept the changes and Shelley Black confirmed with a 2 nd motion to accept. - Susan asked the members to take a NAPM-Utah pamphlet following the meeting, to share with associates in the Purchasing profession. - Susan passed around the folder containing members Continuing Education points for lunch meeting attendance in 2005 and Jim Parker, GBA Coordinator, came from SLC to conduct the election. He introduced the candidates, who spoke to the members in this order: Gerald Tramposh, Jorge Altamirano, David Schofield, Santos Ontiveros, Joshua Mayer, Tracey Stevens, Julia Tumanuvao, and Jeff Palmer. Following these presentations, ballots were distributed to the members for voting. The ballots were collected and taken outside the room and combined with the votes from the SLC dinner meeting, and counted by Jim Parker and Jeff Palmer. - Jim Parker announced the winners of the 2007 election. - It s good to note that both Santos Ontiveros and Joshua Mayer were well received at the SLC and Provo meetings. Joshua won by one vote. Also, Jorge Altimirano got the most votes of any candidate in a single meeting. Although, he did not win this time, there is always next year. Congratulations to David Schofield on his election to the Board of Directors for , and to Joshua Mayer on his election to the Central Utah Branch Director position for the term. We also welcome Julia Tumanuvao as our President, Tracey Stevens as our Vice President, and Jeff Palmer as Immediate past President, as well as other Officers and Board members elected from the SLC area. We look forward to getting to know you better this year. We have yet another informative presenter for our May 16 th luncheon, Kelly Matthews, Ph.D., Vice President and Economist at Wells Fargo Bank in SLC. See you then!
