If you haven't paid your 2010 dues yet, please do so soon! We still have over 20 members who haven't yet paid their 2010 dues. Surprisingly, the list includes a fair number of Past Masters (you know who you are ;-) The list of names of those who haven't paid 2010 dues will be read during the October Stated, with a NPD (non-payment of dues) letter sent shortly afterwards. Those who haven't paid by the following November Stated will be dropped from the roles. Help save your Secretary all that extra paperwork and send in your dues today! September Stated: Western Night! Remember: our Stated Communication September 2 nd after being dark for the summer is Western Night! Wear appropriate cowboy garb (but leave the spurs at home they leave marks on the floor) and join us for a Western-theme dinner! From The East The State of the Union Brethren I do not wish to speak about the status of our Country. My wish is to discuss the status of our Masonic Fraternity at Beaverton Masonic Lodge. As we return to our labors this is an ideal time to regroup and think about the events of this past year. Two new members have been added to our roster. Soon we will advance them in Masonry as they take the obligations we have all taken before. Unfortunately, this year we also buried a Brother under tragic circumstances and we have moved on. Yet we have also honored his commitments as we must do as Masons. We have stayed on budget this year while adding new events and projects. Our income has fallen off due to lack of rentals and in some way due to the down turn in our economy. Our rental demographic is very narrow. We now have a committee looking into ways to widen our demographic and improve our rental possibilities. We are also looking Page 1

2 at other sources of income. Many Lodges today suffer from a lack of income. Sometimes it s due to declining membership. At times the economy is the cause. Lodges look to rentals to supplement their income. Some lodges have the good fortune to find other sources of income. If it was our choice we would not deal with all the problems associated with renting our building. If lodges cannot solve this fundamental problem they must integrate with another lodge or disband. As we look to the future we must embrace the things that have made us a strong Lodge. Our ritual has always been notable. We have always been able to attract new members. Our ritual alone will not continue to attract new members or keep us from losing members. Our lodge must offer its members new activities and continuing education. This year we were able to host a Past Dinners Dinner; a Widows Dinner; a yard sale and a Masonic Picnic. This will be followed by our Western Dinner in September and a football tailgate event in October. These activities are a good beginning in making our lodge more viable to its members. These traditions should be continued next year and other activities added as well. Although we go dark for two months of the year there is no reason that our building should remain empty. We have opportunities during the Summer to influence and attract all the citizens who pass by our door. Although the Master of our Lodge has nearly unlimited authority, this doesn t mean he has unlimited resources. The Master and his officers need other lodge members to initiate and chair new activities and projects. Our Youth Groups need mentors. We need members to be coaches and mentors to our new candidates. Our traditions should not include burning out our officers and anticipating the out going master to go into seclusion for a year. Soon I will be asking members to pledge financial assistance to our lodge, beyond what they already pay in dues. We need to make our lodge financially secure and have enough income to continue to remodel our building. An upgraded building will attract more renters and members. In the end this will double our efforts in making us financially secure. Please consider what his Lodge and this building have meant to you throughout the years. What are we willing to invest to see that this resource will be here for the next 100 years? See you in September! We all need to do more myself included. If you will bring a gift of a door prize any value appropriate for the raffle tickets we offer monthly at stated or call with what you would like to give away that will make it more exciting for the spouses, guests and other visitors who are there for dinner with us. Please think outside the box! Show me you read this, you care, you will bring something for that and or our upcoming yard sale and I will help make your experience at stated even better, and that we can have more fun and serve better as well! 3 From The South I recently attended the Tigard-Orenomah Chapter Order of DeMolay Installation of Officers on August 17th and I would like to share my experience with you. I must say that I was thoroughly impressed with the work of these young men. The installing officers were well rehearsed and the installation went like clockwork. The newly installed officers were eager to fill their positions, with huge grins on their faces the entire night. It was inspiring to watch. You can really see the leadership, public speaking, and confidence these young men are developing in DeMolay. The thing that really stuck with me that night was the fact that everyone genuinely had a good time. The installation was a pirate themed event; complete with flamingo boxers and a gift exchange. I guess you would just have had to have been there to understand, but fun was had by all! I appreciated that this was a fun event and I think it serves to strengthen the bonds of these young men, along with the other youth groups in attendance. The DeMolay were well supported. There were many friends, family, and concordant bodies in attendance. I was sure to pass along some fraternal greetings from Beaverton 100 after the ceremony, and let them know that we are proud of their accomplishments. The future of DeMolay looks bright! 4 Beaverton Lodge Family Picnic Beaverton Lodge had a great Family Picnic at the Tualatin Community Park on Sunday June 27th! Worshipful Master Rick brought his grill, and with cooking assistance from Junior Warden Nick, the burgers and hot dogs kept the hungry masses at bay! Beaverton Lodge Golf Team Scores for MSAP The Beaverton Masonic Lodge team of Don Martin, John Miller, Mike Baggs, and Phil Myers scrambled up a second place finish in the annual Model Student Assistance Golf Outing. The event was held at Stone Creek Golf Club on July 15th. Don s team bought just enough mulligans to make it all work. The team was 10 under par, which was pretty amazing considering where some of the shots wound up. It was a great day for a great cause! Page 4

5 Beaverton Parade / Yard Sale Coming Up! The City of Beaverton will be having it's annual Beaverton Celebration Parade Saturday September 18 th, which passes right in front of our Lodge building. We'll be pulling out some of our benches to provide the best seating along the parade route, so bring the family out to enjoy the parade with us! The city starts closing down streets along the parade route around 9:30AM or so before the parade start at 10:00AM, so either come on down early or give yourself extra time to navigate around the road blocks and deal with the extra traffic. Beaverton Masonic Lodge will also be putting on a Yard Sale during the parade (might as well take advantage of all those folks passing by). If you have any extra stuff cluttering up your closets that you would like to donate to the Lodge to help the sale, please bring them down Friday evening September 19 th, or make arrangements with the Secretary. We may also be selling food and/or drink items during the parade. To help support the yard/food/drink sales, we're gonna need some extra help. The plots are side by side and are near the Masonic Mausoleum and road with a great view of the Tualatin valley. The asking price is $ each and includes the transfer fee.
