1 1 Wesley United Methodist Women 147 Years of Women in Service to Women PURPOSE United Methodist Women shall be a Purpose is to, and to experience Freedom as whole persons ;to develop a creative, supportive Fellowship; and to expand through participation in the global ministries of the church. October 2017 Dear Friends, One of the things I love about living in this area is the changing seasons. As I look around at the beautiful Fall colors it makes me conscious of the ever presence of God in our everyday lives. As God s creating presence is in the changes of nature, so is God presence in the changes of our lives. It is easy to see God s purpose in nature but a little more challenging sometimes to see it in our lives. However, with the same faith that we know tomorrow will come and the seasons will change we know that God is alive working within us. Everyday give thanks for God s presence. Is there a special event or a memory you give thanks for with a relative or a friend and would like to do something special with it? Well, on November the 4 th we, United Methodist Women, are having a special event, Memoir Your Way (see article below). This will be a Cover Dish Luncheon with an invitation to the whole church and friends. So please mark your calendar and plan to be with us. Bring a friend. UMW will provide a main dish, and attendees will be asked to bring a salad, side dish, or dessert. We are inviting the entire congregation to this event. Our speakers will be Nadine James and Katherine Nutt, two of the six authors of Memoir Your Way: Tell Your Story through Writing, Recipes, Quilts, Graphic Novels, and More by the Memoir Roundtable. The Memoir Roundtable is a group of six authors (from top left, clockwise): graphic novel creator Natasha Peterson, quilter Linda Pool, memoir workshop and retreat leader Joanne Lozar Glenn, food editor and memoir writing teacher Dianne Hennessy King, memoir teacher and scrapper, Katherine Nutt, and children's literacy consultant Nadine James. The speakers will discuss the many ways in which anyone can produce a meaningful memoir. They will have time afterwards to sign any books that attendees might have purchased in advance (available on BarnesandNoble.com or Amazon.com) or at the luncheon. It is not necessary to buy a book to attend

3 3 VIRGINIA CONFERENCE UNITED METHODIST WOMEN 45 th ANNUAL MEETING OCTOBER 28th Trinity United Methodist Church 903 Forest Ave., Henrico, Virginia The key note speaker will be Bishop Sharma D. Lewis. Registration for the event is $15 and includes lunch. Registration deadline is October 15. If you can arrive on Friday, join us for a music and dance concert, followed by an ice cream social. If you need a hotel room for overnight, you can make your own reservation at Holiday Inn Express Richmond, at a special UMW rate of $89 plus tax. You can also contact Janet Keener at ( or janet_keener@cox.net) SOCIAL ACTION PAT GOBEN October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Shockingly, one in four women are victims of domestic violence in their lifetime and one in nine men. Physical and sexual assaults, or threats to commit them, are the most apparent forms of domestic violence and are usually the actions that allow others to become aware of the problem. However, regular use of other abusive behaviors by the batterer, when reinforced by one or more acts of physical violence, make up a larger system of abuse. These include taking control through one or more of the following: coercion and threats; intimidation; emotional abuse; isolation; minimizing, denying, and blaming; using children; economic abuse; or treating her like a servant and acting like the master of the castle. If you know of someone who needs help, there are numbers they may call to get shelter, advice and many other services. 4 SUGGESTED PROGRAM for The OCTOBER program is God s Word: The Sacred Space for Encountering God on page 25. The objective of this program is to hear stories about sacred encounters with God and to discover ways of engaging and connecting scripture to real life. Ms. Shaw is a very lovable 80 plus-year old woman who has spent a lifetime of action-packed adventures. She decided to keep a journal of her aging process beginning as an octogenarian. There is a lot of humor in her writings as she discovers that the process of aging has various levels of understanding and acceptance. She always expresses a positive attitude in her observations about her physical debilities. I enjoyed reading her adventures and felt uplifted about the possibilities of living life to its fullest even in the event of adversities. 5 5 Book Club IS HERE COME JOIN US! Our next UMW Book Club meeting is planned for Sunday, November 19th after the 11:00 a.m. Worship Service in the Church Library. We will discuss the book A House in the Sky. All ladies of Wesley are invited to join in these casual discussions of selected books taken from the UMW National Reading Book list. This particular book is from the 2018 list and comes under the category Education for Mission. The public library carries 12 copies as well as an e-book. Contact Pat Sampson, if you have any questions about attending ARLINGTON DISTRICT UNITED METHODIST WOMEN ANNUAL MEETING On Saturday, September 23rd, four ladies from Wesley attended the Arlington District UMW (ADUMW) Annual Meeting at Arlington Temple UMC -- Janet Keener, Phyllis Kirkman, Sue Moulton, and Jean Feeney. Because of the church s location over a gas station in Rosslyn, several ladies rode the Metro to attend! We enjoyed a delicious continental breakfast, meaningful worship service, and business meeting. The worship service included Candle Burning for 40 minutes to honor and remember special people in our lives. Our worship speaker was Karen McElfish, a past ADUMW president and current VAUMW vice president. Her message was UMW, What s in YOUR Bag? She actually pulled out items from her tote bag showing how UMW members can put Faith, Hope, Love into Action. The business included accepting the Proposed 2018 Budget, and distribution of Awards, as well as election and Installation of Officers. Wesley received awards for the Reading Program, Six-Star Mission Giving, and Gold honors for Living into Our Purpose. Janet Keener will continue as Secretary and Phyllis Kirkman will be Spiritual Growth Mission Coordinator while continuing with Program Resources. There are some officer positions to be filled; check with us for more information. We completed the day with Holy Communion. It was a wonderful day!

6 Arlington District UMW Mini Mission Encounter The Arlington District UM Women will hold a Mini Mission Encounter on November 11 th at 9am -Noon, at Great Falls United Methodist Church, Georgetown Pike, Great Falls. The topic will be the Red Bird Mission. 6 Red Bird Mission is collecting new Children s Bibles to give to the children in the area for Christmas. There will be a collection box at the Encounter if you would like to contribute a Children s Bible Read the November Newsletter for more information.
