1 1 Wesley United Methodist Women 149 Years of Women in Service to Women PURPOSE United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose Purpose is to know God, And to experience Freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive Fellowship; and to expand Concepts of Mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. February 2018 Dear Friends, In February we generally think of Valentine s Day on the 14 th but this year it also happens to be Ash Wednesday. As we begin the year together, let us take time both individually and as a team to reflect on the One who guides us Jesus. His commitment to God s truth and to the will of God is a guide for us. His love of God and His relationship gave us a new direction to experience a closeness with God. Take this Lenten Season to nourish your journey of faith: take the challenge that Pastor Cho has given us to read the entire Bible throughout the year; join a Bible Study, and pray daily. The Prayer and Self -Denial envelops will be outside the Library. We have a number of special District and Conference events in the coming months; take a look at them in the newsletter. We will host the District Spring Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, March 10 th, more information is in the newsletter. A very special event is our UMW Assembly May 18-20, in Columbus, Ohio. Next year we will celebrate our 150 years as a Women s organization in the United Methodist Church. I will be asking people to serve on a Task force to make this a very special celebration. If you would be interested to serve please let me know. Blessings Always, Janice

They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope PROGRAM RESOUCES - PAT SAMPSON: The First White Frost by Homer Noley is another book about our Native Americans. The title of the book refers to the first movement west into territory set aside by the U.S. Government for Native American Indians to settle. They were forced from their homelands into wild, untamed lands at a time of the year when their crops had been confiscated by troops of the U.S. Government leaving them without provisions for their long and arduous journey. The author used his research from historic records and Methodism s General Conference archives to compile this book. He writes about the mission activities by Methodists with the Native Americans from the earliest settler times to the present and tries to answer the questions many Methodists had then and now as to how and why this atrocity could occur. This book comes under the category Education for Missions for We have one copy of this book in our church library Pat
5 5 This year the theme is Learning for a Lifetime: Developing Leaders Leadership development remains a key part of United Methodist Women s vision today. Equipping women and girls around the world to be leaders in communities, agencies, workplace, governments and churches is one of the five commitments in our vision statement. Today, more than 20,00 individuals receive mission education in annual u s; hundreds of elected and emerging United Methodist Women leaders attend leadership Development Days each year. From the United Methodist Women s Program Book, Scared Spaces: Encounter with God and Neighbor. The Prayer and Self-Denial Envelopes are outside the Church Library. The Power of Bold will be the theme of the 19th quadrennial Assembly of United Methodist Women in Columbus, Ohio, May 18-20, This Assembly is particularly momentous in that it marks both the official celebration of the organization s 150th anniversary and a return to the location of the first Assembly in The speakers will be Michelle Alexander, Leymah Gbowee, Katharine Hayhoe and Hannah Adair Bonner Our movement was launched by the bold action of women who saw need and claimed their power as disciples of Jesus Christ to address it, said Harriett Jane Olson, chief executive officer of United Methodist Women and additional speaker at the event. They sent women leaders Isabella Thoburn, an educator, and Dr. Clara Swain, a doctor to India to serve women and children in This daring continued when leaders took a bold stand for racial justice and moved their first Assembly in 1942 from St. Louis to Columbus, where African- American women were welcomed at hotels and other public accommodations. The speakers at this year s Assembly are all bold leaders and experts in their fields of mass incarceration, economic inequality, maternal and child health and climate justice.
