Where has 2012 gone? It seems like yesterday that I became Tebala s 117 th Potentate. It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve as your Potentate. I would like to personally thank the rest of the Divan for working with me and supporting me this year. They have done a great job at working at bringing the fun and laughter back to Tebala. The Divan has done everything I have asked of them and more. Additionally, I wish to thank all of the Divan Aides. Yours is a thankless job, but a necessary one, and the further up the line your Divan Member climbs, the more that will be asked of you. Next I wish to thank Denise for all she does that no one sees. Without her knowledge and expertise we would surely struggle! I know that her job is not always easy.just about the time she gets one of us trained, we bring in a new one! Thank you Denise, you are truly an asset to Tebala. How can I even begin to thank Tom & Nancy? They are so much more than the best aids a Potentate could ever ask for! Thanks for all of your hard work, for the way that you promote Shriners International and Tebala. Thanks for being a sounding board and occasionally the voice of reason and more than anything else, for your friendship. And of course, no one does centerpieces like Nancy does centerpieces! Thanks to all of you that have supported the events held this year. Additionally in want to express my appreciation to those of you that pitched in and helped with an event or project. Thanks again to my advisors. It was always great to know that I had such respected men to call upon. We must continue to work toward increasing our membership. Ideally if we could get our numbers back up over 1,400 it would solve a lot of our financial problems. We have brought in some very enthusiastic new Nobles. I ask that you support them and encourage them in addition to helping them. Our most obvious ongoing financial challenge is the ownership of our Temple. Currently, the operation of this building costs us roughly $35, to $40, and rentals do little to offset those expenses. Competition for weddings and banquets is fierce and we must do all that we can do to make our facility more appealing in order to increase our market share. To that end, recently, Jerry Minor spearheaded the project of installing a flat screen TV in the foyer that we can use to promote Shriners International and Tebala but also could stream video for weddings, corporate training, fights, concerts or any other events. Please, each and every time that you walk into Tebala, try to see it with new eyes and share any ideas that you have that you feel could make it a more appealing venue for rentals. That said, it will still be an uphill battle. Tebala continues to rely on fund raising and donations for their life blood. Each of us can help in that process thru our contributions both personal and financial and by remembering to be an ambassador for Tebala, Shriners International & Shriners Hospitals for Children every day. Thanks Again To One And All! It is now time for me to wish the 2013 Divan the very best for next year and for me to settle into my new role as aid for Tom Watson and his Lady Nancy. Lastly, I wish to thank my wife, Laura. Despite the fact that I failed miserably at my quest (as I promised at my installation) to tell her that I love her every day, she has been there for me. Sometimes it has been an event at Tebala or elsewhere but most of the time it was just being there whenever and wherever I needed her. I am truly fortunate. At so many of the Shrine events you hear the speaker say that he needs to acknowledge his Lady because if he doesn t it will cost him a new dress. Anyone that knows Laura knows that she is not going to punish me by buying a new dress, however a six pack of good beer will usually get me back in her good graces! I wish you all a joyous Holiday Season and a prosperous Yours in faith, Dave Babcock Potentate T e b a l a w o r k i n g m o v i n g H e a v e n a n d E a r t h f o r t h e K i d s!

5 January 2013 Tebala Gram 5 Chaplain s Call Welcome to the new year of Some years ago I was introduced to a poem that contained the following thought: Wonderful, Wonderful fortunate you, this is the year that your dreams come true. I happen to believe this can be true for each of us this year. No matter what our age, no matter what challenges we are confronted with, no matter what has happened in the past this year is the year when our dreams can come true. The year of 2013 can become the best year of our lives! All that is required for this to happen is our willingness to not only believe it but to also become the person through which the achievement is realized. There are three points I would like to emphasize concerning this idea: 1. Nothing meaningful is ever achieved by ourselves! Achievement is always made possible through the minds, hearts, and labors of others that also believe in the viability of our goals and dreams. None of us were born into this world by ourselves. We were welcomed into this world by a mother. We were educated by dedicated educators and through the process of maturing were exposed to opportunities through which we developed skills and abilities that benefited others and ourselves. We need one another to achieve not only our own personal goals but also the goals and objectives of our Shrine. 2. The more we help others achieve their dreams and goals the more we are helped! In my mind there are two major points concerning the development of any business venture. The first point is in order to stay in business we must remain profitable. That means we work to keep our expenses down so that we can market our products at a level that produces a profit. The second point is just as we work to keep expenses down we must also embrace the responsibility associated with providing an opportunity for any employee to have the confidence necessary to build a life and future for themselves and their family. This is no small endeavor! This perspective is also true concerning our commitment to our Shrine Center and Shrine Hospitals. 3. The third point I would like to make is associated with a concept called Collective Consciousness. Through our combined thoughts and efforts we are capable of establishing and accomplishing goals and dreams that would otherwise be beyond our reach. Together we are able to work miracles. However, anytime one individual chooses to become resistant to the accomplishment of these ideals that individual not only causes discomfort within the organization but also within the consciousness of the public at large. The actions of one become a reflection of the whole! The Collective Consciousness of the whole is reflected throughout every area of our lives. In 2013 I am looking forward to a great year. This is true for our Shrine, my personal life, and for all of you. I know this means I must be committed and rise above my past capabilities and become a more effective leader (a better Shriner and Mason), a better Minister, Husband, and friend! I look forward to our journey during the year of 2013 for I know you believe in the ideals for which we stand and strive to live up to the obligation of a Master Mason. May God Bless us all as well as our beloved Shrine. Rev. Les McClelland, Chaplain P l a c e Y O U R a d v e r t i s em e n t i n t h e T e b a l a G r a m T O D A Y!

6 6 Tebala Gram January 2013 LOVES PARK SHRINE CLUB NEWS (and random thoughts) 2013 is a reality. What can each of us do to make it one of the best years ever? I suggest we share our three T s, Time, Talent and Treasures for the betterment of Tebala. Just do it!! One betterment, I think should happen is by making sure this publication is in your mailbox on, or before, the first day of each month. Just do it! As you read last month we are dark until April. However, your officers will be meeting between now and then to plan and prepare for the year. Your attention is drawn to the last paragraph of this column Yes, we would like input. Just do it! The only other NEWS is our P.O. Box has been lonely lately. How about sending in your dues for 2013! ($10.15 for the whole year) Don t be bashful.. You can join the Loves Park Shrine Club for $10.15 also. Just do it! Something for Everyone TIME: Brain Teaser: In a conventional clock, how many times does the minute hand pass the hour hand between noon and midnight? Keep reading for the answer. Life s To Do s You can miss a lot of good things in life by having the wrong attitude. Never get yourself into a position where you have to back up a trailer. Memorize the names of the books of the BIBLE. Don t be so open minded that your brains fall out. Read the Old Farmer s Almanac. Ponderings There is just as much horse sense as ever, but it seems the horses have it. No one knows of your honesty and sincerity unless you give out some samples. Remember-it is hard to steer a parked car. If silence is golden, not many people could be accused of hoarding. In this world it is not what we take up, but what we give up that makes us rich. Take away the cause and effect ceases. People may doubt what you say, but they ll always believe what you do. When nothing is going right, turn left. Recent T-shirt Sightings I am the celebrity you think I look like. I really should get a backup GARAGE just in case. My train of thought has left the station. Some mistakes are too much fun to make only once. There. Their. They re not the same Politicians & Diapers need to be changed often for the same reason CSI Can t Stand Idiots Who Said That? Smoking is one of the leading causes of statistics. Fletcher Knebel Every day I get up and look through the Forbes list of the richest people in America. If I m not there, I go to work. Robert Orben If I were two-faced, would I be wearing this one? Abraham Lincoln The covers of this book are too far apart. Ambrose Bierve Always remember that you re unique. Just like everyone else. Unknown Brain Teaser Answer: Ten Times. (You can verify it yourself) Kids & Grandkids Time: It was the little girl s first day at school, and the teacher was making out her registration card. What is your father s name? she asked. Daddy, replied the child. Yes, I know, but what does your mother call him? Oh, she doesn t call him anything. She likes him! Teacher: Why don t you brush your teeth? I can see what you had for breakfast this morning. Student: What did I have? Teacher: Eggs! Student: You re wrong! That was yesterday. Girl: Too bad you flunked the test. How far were you from the right answer? Boy: Two seats! Laugh A Little Time: Good Spelling Everyone knows I m a stickler for good spelling. So when an associate ed technical documents asking me to decifer them, I had to set him straight. Decipher is spelled with a ph, not an f, I wrote. In case you ve forgotten, spell checker comes free with your Microsoft program. A minute later came his reply: Must be dephective. Discouraged? As I was driving home from work one day, I stopped to watch a local Little League baseball game that was being played in a park near my home. As I sat down behind the bench on the first-base line, I asked one of the boys what the score was. We re behind 14 to nothing, he answered with a smile. Really, I said. I have to say you don t look very discouraged. Discouraged? the boy asked with a puzzled look on his face. Why should we be discouraged? We haven t been up to bat yet. 7 January 2013 Tebala Gram 7 Legacy Corner In this edition of Legacy Corner we get a little background on a Brother and Past Potentate, Noble Duncan R. Brown, a proud Shriner and a Legacy of Tebala. Q: When did you first become a Mason and a Shriner, and why was it important to you to become one? A: I became a Mason in March, 1951, as a member of Star in the East #166 and will mark my 62nd year in I became a Shriner in May, 1961, at the All-State Ceremonial held in Rockford. In Spring 1967, I was one of the six young Nobles selected to found the Rockford Shrine Club and become one of the first board members. In 1972 I was elected Oriental Guide and became Potentate of Tebala in the bi-centennial year of Q: Who in your family has been in the Fraternity? A: My father, Charles F. Brown, became a Shriner when he was Mayor of Rockford in He co-signed with me for my son David s petition in To the best of my knowledge, I am the only Potentate of Tebala who has had both his father and his son as members of the Temple during his year as Potentate. My uncle, William W. Brown, was a Tebala member, as well as Ray L. Weingartner, my father's brother-in-law. Q: Can you tell us about your fondest memory of being a Shriner? A: My fondest memory in the Shrine is being selected in 1985 as a member of the Imperial Endowments, Will's and Gifts Committee (now called the Imperial Shrine Donor Relations Committee.) This position permitted me to know each of the Imperial Potentates, and has made me a strong supporter of the Hospitals ever since. Q: What advice or recommendations do you have for improving and enhancing the fun and spirit here at Tebala? A: Probably the best advice I can give is to make sure we are always "tuned in" to the interest of prospective members rather than just cater to entrenched beliefs of old people like myself. Q: How many Masons have you brought into our fraternity? A: I have been privileged to sponsor thirteen men to join Tebala. Contact me to share your Legacy: Jerry Minor, Membership. I wish you all well. Rock River Motorcycle Club Makes Donation The Rock River Motorcycle Club made a donation to the Tebala Shriners Transportation fund for the third year in a row. The Rock River Riders Motorcycle Club was founded in 1935 and currently has 68 members involved in all aspects of motorcycling. Members have served in leadership positions in both the AMA and District 17. The club is located in Polo, Illinois. They hold a Hill Climb Competition on Father s Day weekend each year, and a portion of the gate is donated to the Tebala Shriners Transportation fund. This past summer, the event had a sell-out crowd. There was a lot of good food, good fun and great people to associate with, who do a great job raising money for charitable organizations. Their donation is greatly appreciated by all the Tebala Shriners and our kids. Donations like this help keep the transportation for the kids going. This year Brian Buza and Joe Blanchard of the Blue Haze Choppers, and Chuck Slater, Art Hass, Joe Klink and Clem Schultz of the Tebala Air Squadron represented the Tebala Shriners at the event. The Air Squadron flew around the grounds and had kids jump in and get their pictures taken inside the planes. Brian and Joe rode their choppers around the grounds, and then decided to challenge the hill climb with their bikes! After they both decided that wasn t a good idea at all, they parked the bikes and with the help of some of the club members, let over 40 kids get on and off and get their pictures taken on the choppers. Everyone had a great time! The event is open to the public. Mark it on your calendar for next year! Joe Blanchard, Blue Haze Choppers President. 8 8 Tebala Gram January 2013 Motor Patrol s Last Parade Just like the mailmen the Motor Patrol will not let a little cold weather stop them from going to a parade. Our last parade was on the twentyfourth of November in Fox Lake, Illinois. The temperature at the parade was a brisk 30 degrees. However, that didn't stop us as is evident by Nobles Gordon Asher, Ziggy and Carlos Durand as they prepare the bikes and the Fez for the parade. At the end of the parade needless to say we were all in need of something to thaw us a bit. But that was the end of our parade season and of course fun was had by all that participated. Respectfully submitted by Mike Hoeth MOTOR PATROL 2012 CHRISTMAS PARTY The Tebala Motor Patrol had its annual Christmas Party at the Moose Lodge in Zion on Saturday, December 8 th. Illustrious Sir Dave Babcock and the Tebala Divan, Chief Rabban John Milliren, Asst. Rabban Loy Rice, High Priest & Prophet Larry Keyser and Oriental Guide Tom Watson swore the Officers in. The 2013 Officers are: President Leonard Seigfried, Vice President Austin Kelley, Secretary Ryan Wilbur, Treasurer Edward Keenen, Parade Coordinator Mike Hoeth, and Equipment Manager Ron Garderla. The food was great, and after Mike explained the rules of the Chinese raffle several times, we almost got it! The members of the Motor Patrol all have stock in Baileys. The raffle produced a lot of nice gifts. Speaking of nice gifts, my hat is off to the Ladies of the Motor Patrol: first, for putting up with guys like Mike and Ziggy, and for making beautiful tabletop Christmas trees out of coat hangers, garland and other decorations. They donated the trees they made to the Shriners Children Hospital and raffled a couple of them off at the party. My hat is off to JoEllen Kelly and the rest of the Ladies who worked out of their garage making the Christmas trees. Nicely done! It was a great party, and Tina and I can t wait for next year. If any names are misspelled, blame Mike. LOL! MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL FROM THE MOTOR PATROL. Respectfully submitted by Joe Blanchard. Message from the Chief Rabban To All clubs and units: Requirements by Imperial. All Clubs and Units must have their financial statements on file at the Shrine Center, by the end of February Also, please file with the office a list of your current officers. BLUE HAZE CHOPPERS ENJOY SILVER FIZZ The Blue Haze Choppers were well represented with members and guest at the annual Tebala Silver Fizz. The Hoffman House had a spectacular, large buffet with everything on it with omelet station that made dishes that were perfect to the "T". The staff that cooks, servers can only be described as the "A" team of the Hoffman House. Mike, the GM of the Hoffman House, was on hand to make sure the food was served in a timely fashion. Also, Mr. Prosier, the CEO of Hoffman House was their to oversee the event. Hats off the the complete Hoffman House Staff. Denise did a great job, as she always does, greeting everyone coming in to the hall and making them feel welcome. Our Shriner greeters Barry Kasmar and Craig Sand outside the facility was a great touch and we heard many great comments on their fine service. Excellent music was provided for by the Tom Fish trio. The raffle was a huge success with four items being raffled off and bringing in $ The raffle items were donated by Barry Kasmar and Bob Bell, Illustrious Sir Dave Babcock and Tina Blanchard. Our bar tender for the day was Ms. Kayla Morris. She did a great job and had assistance provided by her brother. The "Silver Fizz Crew" did an outstanding job this year using 18 gallons of ice cream. What can you say about that crew!!! Their the best in the business of party drinks bar none. You can count on them every year making their signature drink to perfection. If you missed out on this once a year VERY special event at Tebala, plan on attending the sold out house next year. 11 January 2013 Tebala Gram 11 Tebala Family Christmas Party Santa really had his hands full this year at the Christmas Party! There were over 75 Children there anxious to tell him what they wanted for Christmas! SHB&G prepared a great meal of hot dogs and chicken strips with chips, cookies and punch. After lunch the children were entertained by Maggie from Mr. E s Magic Show while waiting for Santa & Mrs. Claus to arrive. As luck would have it, Santa arrived just as the Magic Show ended! The Tebala Clowns did an amazing job creating balloon art for the children and an especially festive Santa hat for the Potentate! 12 12 Tebala Gram January 2013 A Message from the Imperial Potentate December 2012 Dear Fellow Nobles, It s hard to believe it s already December, with the holidays fast approaching! We had another busy month. Following the fall Joint Boards Meeting in Tampa in November, PIP Gene Bracewell, who is also chairman of donor development, and I traveled to the Houston hospital for the presentation of a One Million Dollar Plaque to Southwest Airlines Inc. The plaque recognizes the company for assisting our patient transportation efforts by providing about 2,700 round-trip tickets to our patients and parents/guardians. The plaque is displayed on the hospital s donor wall. Several VIPs from Southwest s Dallas headquarters, as well as members of the Houston media were on hand were on hand for the presentation, and received a tour of the facilities and lunch. It was a very inspiring day for everyone. Then we headed north for a three-night stay in Montreal, Canada, hosted by KARNAK Temple. Our first stop was City Hall, where we met the acting Mayor and signed the GOLD book. This was followed by a tour of the our Shriners Hospital in Montreal the next day, along with a visit to the construction site of the future Medical Center complex, which will include a new Shriners Hospital. Our current hospital in Canada is the oldest in Canada At the start of the construction site visit, Jan and I, Janet and Imperial Sir Wayne Lachut and Dianne and Illustrious Sir Harry Brisson all had to put on steel-toed boots, hard hats and orange safety vests. This was quite an experience. We were climbing up and down six flights of wooden stairs, and looking at pipes, steel beams and a lot of concrete walls. What an amazing medical center this will be when finished! Shriners Hospitals for Children will break ground for contruction in March of 2013, with completion of the project expected in the spring of T e b a l a w o r k i n g m o v i n g H e a v e n a n d E a r t h f o r t h e K i d s!

13 January 2013 Tebala Gram 13 Later, Karnak Potentate Harry Brisson and his Lady Dianne hosted a party at the temple for us, which was attended by more than 150 Nobles and Ladies. The town crier announced our arrival, and the drum and bugle corps performed as special escorts took us to our seats. Saturday was the Montreal Santa parade. Imperial Sir Wayne and I rode on the Karnak train (made from a school bus chassis). An estimated crowd of 700,000 (WOW!) watched the Christmas parade. The parade route was lined with children! It was quite an amazing sight! On Sunday we flew from Montreal to London, Ontario, Canada, to visit MOCHA Temple and tour the Ontario Children s Hospital, where we watched a demonstration of telemedicine. The telemedicine equipment is funded by Mocha Temple. Mocha Shriners purchased three-story brick house built in 1892 to use as their Temple. They added banquet facilities to the rear of the property and kept the house basically intact. The woodwork is beautiful. There are coffered ceilings in many rooms, built-in bookcases and fireplaces in each room. A wrap-around porch has been enclosed to add seating to the dinning room which is open to the public five days per week. They ve done a magnificent job with the building. Illustrious Sir Dave Fickling and Lady Patricia hosted a banquet Monday night attended by more than 120 Nobles and ladies. Many checks from the clubs, units, and Mocha temple were presented to us for Lady Jan s Program, which benefits the hospitals research program. Our singing patient ambassador, Jeremy Gabriel, and his mother were special guests at the banquet. Jeremy sang a couple of songs for us and everyone crowded around him at the end of the evening activities, wanting to get to know him and congratulate him on his many accomplishments. Next, we traveled back to Charlotte to attend the 8 th Annual Oasis All- Star Classic football game, featuring players from the North and South Carolina private high schools. Attending the game along with us were Imperial Sirs Chris Smith, Wayne Lachut, Jim Smith and Imperial Chaplain John Stanley, along with their Ladies Ethel, Janet, Alice and Rose. North Carolina won the game and the series is tied 4-4! Next on our busy agenda was a trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico to visit AL RAI E SALEH Temple to finalize plans for our spring trip in support of the clinic that will be presented by our Philadelphia and Springfield hospitals. Illustrious Sir Rafeal and his Lady Margarita hosted a dinner for us, along with the Temple Divan and Past Potentate J.J. Mulinelli in celebration of the temple s achieving GOLD status in membership. We also toured the P.R. V.A. hospital to view where hundreds of children will be examined on April 20, 2013, by the Philadelphia and Springfield hospital staff and doctors. Tebala has always done its share of giving, and I would encourage Nobles to think about the Hospital for individual donations on a yearly basis or think about placing it in your wills. We will be active in promoting the Illinois Shrine Football Game again this summer. More news will be forthcoming regarding this event. Nobles should always be thinking about any children they are aware of that could be treated at our Chicago facility. We recently did another Hospital "Dog and Pony" show at the Oregon Rotary Club.
