5 February 2013 Tebala Gram 5 Chaplain s Call Another year has been completed and January has already been experienced. Now we are entering the second month of This is a month focused upon celebrating Valentine s Day. Do you remember when you received your first Valentines Card? The one I remember took place in 3 rd grade. For me it was from a classmate who I thought was the smartest in my grade. I am not certain about what it said at this point however I can somewhat remember what I felt. I was certain that my card had a special meaning and it was not until some years later that I learned that her mother actually wrote the sentiment in the card for her. My bubble certainly was pierced and my heart became deflated. She was always nice but do you remember how you tended to inflate situations in a manner that reflected what you believe to be true but were not actually true. This is something that adults often tend to do even today. Individuals can, if they are not careful, create a scenario in their mind that is so far off the mark that anyone who would see it would be mystified. Just because a person does something does not mean that we should forever label them by that prior action. In life, more often than not we are actually judged by others by what we are doing now and not necessarily what we did months or years ago. Each moment is filled with the opportunity to let others know who we are and who we aren t by our actions. This is a gift from God! He has provided us with the wonderful capacity to change! We are able to learn from our mistakes and thereby become a better person for having committed the previous error. Sometimes individuals do not realize this and tend to carry within themselves memories of prior hurts and disappointments thereby enabling them to relive over and over the past experiences as if they are continually taking place. Many of the prophets of old, as well as other more enlightened individuals, have emphasized the importance of forgiveness. Forgiveness is not an activity that approves bad behavior; rather, it is an activity that sets us free from the disappointment, hurt and pain associated with the experience. In order to really forgive, we are required to see things from a different vantage point. This enables us to look at the experience from a higher level of understanding. This provides us with the ability to gain increased wisdom, demonstrate respect, and become a kinder, stronger, more humble person. This is not easily done in a world that consistently demands its pound of flesh. However, as a Master Mason we are called to be better than that. We are called to demonstrate greater restraint, express real concern and a willingness to do that which is of a higher level of understanding. Such improvement is made possible in our constant communication with the Supreme Being of the Universe our Heavenly Father. The common wisdom handed down to us by our forefathers informs us that our communication with God is established through prayer. Do we seek to do God s will? In prayer, we can ask God Our Father what he would have us P l a c e Y O U R a d v e r t i s em e n t i n t h e T e b a l a G r a m T O D A Y! do. But then comes the difficult part; we have to listen and try to understand what he is asking of us. I believe it takes a quiet, sincere, honest, believing, trusting and open mind. Perhaps he talks to us by something we hear or see, something burning on the stove, something we dropped on the floor, heard on the phone or saw in the paper. He can speak to us in uncountable ways; and does. Do we open our hearts to hear Him? We know that God in Whom WE PUT OUR TRUST does love us. He is the one that has given us eyes to see; ears to hear; the ability to touch, feel, smell and taste; and brains with which to interpret the messages He sends to us. Through developing an appreciation for the message contained within the enlightened writings of scripture, we can discover a set of rules and examples to follow that can guide our every thought, word, and action. So as good Nobles all, I invite you seek enhanced understanding concerning the value of your own life as well as the life of others. Seek to reach out to those around you during this month of February and let them know just how much you appreciate and care for them. As a Noble I would encourage you to personally do this rather than having another person do it for you. I remember well the disappointment I felt when I discovered that the classmate of my third grade class did not really write what was in the card. She did not even know what it said, but was more interested in getting her own cards to see what others were saying to her. Pat and I look forward to seeing you at the Valentines Dinner Dance on Friday February 15th at Tebala Temple. May God s blessings be with you throughout the month. Fraternally yours, Rev. Les McClelland Chaplain and Oriental Guide

6 6 Tebala Gram February 2013 LOVES PARK SHRINE CLUB NEWS (and random thoughts) Reminder Time: We are dark until April as previously stated. During this darkness we will be doing some repair work on our PA- RADE UNIT. The Blazer needs a new A/C and the Carousel needs some repair work. Speaking of parades we received our first invitation to participate. Noble Gene Snyder is our parade chairman and we have high expectations for a record setting year. Club President PP Leon Larsen has jaw-boned for increased insurance coverage (including dolls) for our PARADE a lower premium. Dues have been trickling in and in some cases a few extra $$$ have been included for the upkeep and repair. Our thanks to the Nobles for their thoughtfulness. Dues are still $10.15 and may be sent to the the end of this article. You are all welcome to join. Over the years many have wondered why the 15 cents? Keep reading: DAD CAN I HAVE A NICKEL? Pumpkin Festival Parade Sycamore, IL Sunday 10/31/99 It s so exciting! The Goblins, Jack-O-Lanterns in place, Ghosts, Pumpkins, all Cheery & Bright! Fall is in the air, leaves so bright, full of color, falling all around you. The Parade Units start to line up, each searching for their own spot. People, blankets & chairs, everyone is curious, who will be here? Here they come! The Loves Park Shrine Club Unit with the Little Red Jeep, and the Carousel! Just another day for them; they go around the area to about parades a year. It s a familiar site.. These men with their RED FEZS on their heads starting to uncover the six horses protected from the long ride. The riders are Six Dolls who each have their own special horse to ride. Some Shriners check the sound system, while others are getting the generator ready to start the Merry-Go-Round.. Now it s time to get acquainted with the other people. The Kishwaukee Valley Habitat for Humanity Float was just a few spaces ahead of the Loves Park Shriners Unit. A mother and three sons were in the back of the pickup truck waiting to pull the float. The boys are curious about the Shriners. The oldest child asked if they were Firemen? They responded, NO! They told the children about the Shrine, explaining they have 19 Hospitals for Children and 3 Burn Hospitals. Children from all over the world are cared for in these hospitals no matter what the families ability to pay. In 1999 the budget for the hospitals was $1,470, per day. THIS IS WHY WE ARE HERE, WE WANT TO HELP THE KIDS. While they talked the youngest son interrupted the adults, Dad, can I have a nickel? His mother quickly said, Hush, be quiet! Soon he asked again, Dad can I have a Nickel? Finally the Father says, What do you want a Nickel for? The boy replies, For the KIDS! All three boys got a nickel and each of them gave their NICKEL to the Shriners for the SHRINE HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN. VERY TOUCHING! Some of the Shriners walked away with lumps in their throats! What to do, what to say, no Trick or Treat! Just Three Nickels for the Hospitals, nickels that made a difference in a way that will always be remembered! Their parents must have been proud of their sons and their selfless actions in this present day attitude of ME FIRST! DAD, CAN I HAVE A NICKEL? will always stay with the men of the Loves Park Shrine Club who were present and came home knowing that what they do at T e b a l a S t e p p i n g U p F o r T h e C h i l d r e n! the parades does make a difference! Now the Rest of the Story The family was going to move into their new Habitat for Humanity home soon, They had put in over 500 hours of Sweat Equity and were going to realize their dream of Home ownership. The mother has a physical disability as the result of polio during her childhood. She had been the recipient of two operations in a Shrine Hospital. The boys had seen and heard their parents as they expressed thankfulness and as they gave back to others. Strangers become friends at the parades and children showed that Giving to Others is the RULE. Alene Johnson 1999 In other NEWS Rumor has it that Noble Doug Heckman received a cookbook for Christmas. He may surprise us at any time between April and October. Plan ahead to be at as many meetings as possible. Something for Everyone Time: Name a profession in 14 letters, in which the first letter is A and an O appears somewhere else in the word. If you re thinking of the right profession, you can drop the O and rearrange the remaining 13 letters to spell the plural of another profession. What is it? Hint: The 13-letter word starts with P. Keep reading for the answer. If you solve this you are MENSA material. Life s to Do s: Buy raffle tickets, candy bars, and baked goods from students who are raising money for school projects. Never go near a kid who s holding a water hose unless you want to get wet. When reading self-help books, include the BIBLE. If you are not going to use a discount coupon, leave it on the shelf with product for someone else

Ponderings: No amount of travel on the wrong road will bring you to the right destination. Jumping for Joy is good exercise. Readers make good talkers. The great thing in the world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving. Good things come to those who wait. Better things come to those who try. Best things come to those who believe in their efforts. Don t let life discourage you; everyone who got where they are had to begin where they were. The secret to success in life is to be ready for opportunity when it comes. The best way to predict the future is to create it. If you cannot do great things, do small things in a great way. Doubt who you will, but never doubt yourself. Recent T-Shirt Sightings: A team effort is a lot of people doing what I say. If I can t build it, fix it, or mow it, it must not be important. Yes, I know they pick on you at school and call you names, but you still have to go, YOU ARE THE TEACHER! On your mark, Get Set, GO AWAY! You re never too old For NAPTIME I Keep Trying to Lose Weight, But it Keeps Finding Me! It Took Me 80 Years to Look This Awesome. Who Said That? To succeed in life, you need a wishbone, a backbone and a funny bone. Reba McEntire If you don t go after what you want you ll never have it. If you don t ask, the answer is always no. If you don t step forward, you re always in the same place. Nora Roberts Someday is not a day of the week. Unknown We cannot all do great things, but we can do small things with great love. Mother Teresa My success just evolved from working hard at the business at hand each day. Johnny Carson I have not failed. I ve just found 10,000 ways that won t work. Thomas Alva Edson People ask me why do I keep compromising my artistic integrity by walking in front of Blake s cameras. Do you know what I tell them? Money. Peter Sellers I tried to think but nothing happened. Curly The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. Jon Hammond I think there is a world market for maybe five computers. Thomas Watson, Chairman of IBM, 1943 Brain Teaser Answer: Astrophysicist, Psychiatrists Kids & Grandkids Time: Dad saw his son s shiner and demanded, Bruce, who gave you that black eye? No one, replied Bruce, I had to fight for it. Q. What goes 99, clunk, 99. clunk, , clunk? A. A centipede with a wooden leg! Q. What species of ants are the biggest? A. ElephANTS! Laugh a Little Time: The Note Pad The four daughters and one son always dashing to school activities and part-time jobs, our schedule was hectic. To add to this, we kept running out of household supplies. I instructed them all to let me know when they used the last of any item by writing it down on a note pad on the refrigerator. As a reminder, I wrote at the top: IF WE ARE OUT OF IT, WRITE IT DOWN. When I found the following message. MOM, YOU MAY BE A BIT OLD-FASHIONED, BUT YOU ARE NOT OUT OF IT. Old Age is Grand An elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%. The elderly gentleman went back to the doctor a month later and the doctor said, Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again. The gentleman replied, Oh, I haven t told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I ve changed my will three times! Two elderly gentlemen from a retirement center were setting on a bench under a tree when one turns to the other and says, Slim, I m 83 years old now and I m just full of aches and pains. I know you re about my age. How do you feel? Slim says, I feel just like a newborn baby. Really!? Like a newborn baby!? Yep. No hair, no teeth, and I think I just wet my pants. 8 8 Tebala Gram February 2013 Legacy Corner In this edition of Legacy Corner we get a little background on a Daughter of the Nile Jan Bloom, a 42 year member and a proud Legacy of Alabet. Q: When did you first become a Daughter of Alabet, and why was it important to you to become one? A: I joined Alabet Temple #31 February 16, After I had one year of side line, I was asked to be Chaplain. That is when the why came to me. I met so many interesting ladies, when I would call on them if they were ill, had broken something or was in distress of a loss of a loved one. To this day I feel that this is one important purpose for us to do as well as helping our children. I get a tremendous feeling after I have visited these people and have helped in some small way. What a great thing if our world and people in it would just take one minute or one afternoon of their time. It would also do so much for our own organization and maybe it would bring our own people back to the fold. Q: Who in your family alive or deceased were or are in the Fraternity, and what Temples do they belong to? A: I had no affiliation with my own family. My husband s family (members) were masons and his mother was very involved with Eastern Star. I joined and immediately got involved. Different purposes but just as important. I became Worthy Matron and then proceeded to be a Grand Lecturer for thirty years. Q. Can you tell us about one or two of your fondest memories of being a Daughter? A: My most inspiring memories were when I was asked to go up the line after being in the order a short time. What a thrilling memory when the crown was placed on my head. I was determined to do my best and to see that the order went forward. I have advised seven different queens who I have tried to inspire to do likewise. Q: What positive advice or recommendations do you have for improving and enhancing the fun and spirit here at Tebala and Alabet? A: With the changes in the world everyone has a different outlook on how to proceed. I believe if we could get out of the "Me" world and back into the "We" world, it would maybe help. I think we need more togetherness with not only the Shrine but with all of the other Masonic organizations. Have fun things with all bodies that don t take money, just some gatherings that we all can express our concerns. What happened to potlucks, cards, and games for children? Get ourselves away from computer, nooks, I pods, s. What happened to face to face? Q: How many have you brought in to the order? A: I have put some people in the order but have no way of knowing how many. Thank you for asking me to express my concerns. Let s all try to turn it around. Why do we do it? For the Children!" Contact Jerry Minor, Membership, to share your Legacy. I wish you all well. Nobles, Membership is looking for enthusiastic individuals who are willing to take on the following critical positions to make up the core of our Membership Team: 1. Vice Chairman Recruitment 2. Vice Chairman Retention/Mentoring 3. Vice Chairman Restoration. 4. Membership Liaison between Shrine and Blue lodges.( active Members for their Blue Lodge and the Shrine) 5.
