1 The Senate spirit Service to Humanity is the best work of life PRESIDENT S MESSAGE The Massachusetts JCI Senate won a number of awards at the US JCI Senate national convention near Cleveland in June, and we are still feeling good about it! Our own Walter Cahoon #27223 won the Jim Calder Memorial Award for Outstanding Senator of the Year at the gala that concluded the convention. As Massachusetts JCI Senate president I was honored to read the script about Jim and the award, and then joined Jan Calder FR#15 with President Bruce Geddes #35527 as he presented the award. How thrilling that he chose Walter, the Mentors Business Manager, who was concluding 15 years of hard work at the national level. Walter truly deserved to receive the award and he shook the hands of a receiving line of past Calder Award honorees as he made his way back to his table. It was a great moment for all of us. The Calder Award is the most desired and competitive award of the whole convention, so it was really exciting to learn that our hard working Walter was recognized this year. We also saw Marilyn Lariviere become FR #53 that night. She was very surprised, but everyone who knows Marilyn knows that our Silent Auction project at the Holiday Social last year was her idea, and she chaired it. Marilyn also produces our Senate directory, and did a great deal of work with the scholarship program mailing to Massachusetts high schools. We knew that Marilyn would receive her award at the convention, and that brought many Massachusetts Senators to attend it to be there for her. Congratulations, Marilyn! She has energy, enthusiasm, and gets things done -- great qualities. We are lucky to have her. I was also very excited when I was recognized as one of the top state presidents of the year. It would not have been possible without the efforts of our excellent board of directors and project chairs. I also accepted the award on behalf of our state for the most Mentors collections in the country. We held the meetings and projects and Walter Cahoon was right there to collect the Mentors contributions and process them. It reflected the very active year we had last year. Our outgoing Region I Vice President, Fran Kass #60798, of Connecticut was honored as one of the top three regional vice presidents. Fran enthusiastically represented New England on the national level and visited our projects and meetings. She was great! Our new VP, Merrill Pottle #23412 of Maine, was at national convention too, and he will do an outstanding job as well. He and his wife Joy look forward to visiting the Massachusetts JCI Senate and will be at our August meeting during Dinner and a Show. So we are ready to start a new year, and I will serve as president again this year. I m excited and honored to do so. I invite each of you to participate by attending one of our meetings. Many of those are held at the South Foxboro Community Center, which has free parking. Or you could come to one of our projects. We will be meeting on Wednesday, July 17 at 6:30 to plan the year ahead, and you will be very welcome. This year we expect to celebrate the 45 th anniversary of the Massachusetts JCI Senate, and we d love your ideas or help in planning that. Let s try some new projects this year. We have a great group of Senators and there is a lot to look forward to in A Publication of the Massachusetts JCI Senate Vol. 44 Issue 1 Inside this issue: Chaplain s Rep 2 MA BOD Convention News 4 Thank you & 5 Cookbook Info Recipe Form 6 CATS & Dinner 7 Foundation info 8 Convention Pics 9 & 10 Bingo Pics 11 FF 2013 reg Kathy Collins#51469

4 Dear Senate Friends, Thank you so much to Kathy Collins and the MA JCI Senate for nominating me for the Friendship Award. It was a wonderful surprise to be named Friendship #53 at the National Convention in Cleveland, even if the presenter couldn t pronounce Lariviere! Thanks to Paul and Nancy Carney for the champagne reception. Even though we haven t been involved in the Senate as long as others, it has been a wonderful experience that will continue. Special thanks to my husband Ed, who is the reason I am involved at all, and to my sister and brother-in-law, Caleb & Martha Fraser who pushed (gently) to get us involved in the beginning. Peace, Marilyn Lariviere Friendship#53 Cleveland Convention Region One had a large contingent traveling to Cleveland and came home with numerous awards. Marilyn Lariviere received her Friendship Award; Fran Kass was one of three outstanding VP s; Kathy Collins was one of five outstanding State Presidents; Massachusetts was the winner of the most Mentors ads and Walter Cahoon received the coveted Jim Calder award. Jan Calder and all of Region One was delighted to see it go to one of our own, who certainly deserved it for all his years of service. We also had, what we thought, an award winning booth at the states party, organized by Cathy Cahoon FR#45. Region One had picked Canada for the theme, Friendship without Borders and we had numerous Canadians helping us serve our Canadian whiskey, Canada mints and our French-Canadian pate. Ed Lariviere was a Canadian Mountie, Kathy Collins was Anne of Green Gables, Walter Cahoon was the Canadian Wolverine and I portrayed Queen Elizabeth. It was great fun and I have never been bowed to, had my hand kissed and knelt to so much in my life. It was a great convention and thanks to everyone who helped. Martha Fraser FR#5 4

5 Calling ALL Senators, Friendship award winners, Friends & Neighbors!!!!!! I need your recipes!!!! Thank you to all who have already sent me theirs. I have about half of what I need for a minimum of number of recipes. My deadline still is July 31 so you don t have much time left. You can them to me at: jciwcahoon@msn.com or by snail mail at 42 No. Walker St., Taunton, MA I will be enclosing the form, but you can type it on a plain piece of paper as well if you need to. I d like to have them printed and get them back in time for Fall Frolic which is coming up very fast. Please help! Thank you in advance, Cathy Cahoon FR#45 CONVENTION STATES PARTY THANK YOU S What a GREAT convention and of course the States Party was fantastic as well! As States Party Chairperson, I want to thank all those from Region One who attended the convention and helped set up and man the booth. This year s theme was Foreign Friendships to go along with President Bruce s theme of Friendship without Borders. Canada was chosen as our country by our Region One NVP Fran Kass. We had a good number of attendees from Region One as well as Canada and even though we did not win, I think we had the most fun! We even had Ambassador to Canada, Phyllis Bowers helping out with the Canadians at our booth. How great is that! Thanks, Phyllis! A BIG THANK YOU to Canadian Pres Eric Cowen & his wife Joan, Rene Jacob, Lloyd Stockdale, Vik Farrugia, Ben & Jinty Jowitt and the rest of the Canadian contingency for their help, friendship and for all of the Canadian souvenirs that they brought with them to give away. The fun and camaraderie that we shared was well worth all of the headaches created during the planning. May our new found friendships continue to flourish! Again Many Thanks! 8 FOUNDATION REPORT One of the many positions I have been involved with through the years is the USJCI Senate Foundation. For many years now the Foundation has been awarding scholarships throughout the country to outstanding seniors who plan on furthering their education by attending college. This year was no exception. Massachusetts submitted 2 applications for National Judging and we had a winner. Kiley Wilcox was awarded a National Scholarship on top of what she received from the MA JCI Senate for her efforts. Congratulations go out to her and Tyler Mikulis who was our other MA winner. Why am I talking about the Foundation? Not everyone has been asked to join the foundation and to help it grow. The more the US JCI Senate Foundation grows the more scholarships we will be able to award in the future. For a contribution of $ you can become a member of the USJCI Senate Foundation. You can contribute all at once or join by doing 3 installments of $ If you need more information please contact me. Another way to help the Foundation is by joining the 200-Club. This is the first time you can win something from the Foundation. Tickets cost $10.00 and this entitles you to 4 chances to win money every month. Your ticket is good thru June of Each month the Foundation awards 4 prizes, First Prize - $100.00, Second Prize $50.00, Third Prize $25.00 and Fourth Prize $ I have tickets available and would love to sell you some. Tickets are $10.00 apiece, or 6 for $ If you buy the 6, you also get credit towards your Foundation Account. Please think about it and remember the money goes to a good cause.
