3 President s Message Our Fall Business Meeting and Board Meeting were held in Portland this past October. Unfortunately, the attendance was very light. We nominated several members for national awards. Would be great if some of our members were chosen to receive awards which will be presented at next year s annual convention in Hawaii! Our District Councilor, Ken Hawkins, MT, has been elected to the national board so will no longer be our councilor. A new councilor will be appointed by the board. Thanks for all your years of dedicated service as our councilor and congratulations on your election to the board! Our next NWSSAMT meeting will be held in the Spring. Watch our website for location and date. Hoping you all take a little time to slow down and enjoy the holidays this year. Wishing you all health and happiness in the year to come. 4 Greetings, Councilor s Message... I must apologize for the length of this message. I have a lot to share with you. I hope you will take the time to read this entire message so you can stay informed of what is happening here in the west and throughout our organization. I have just recently returned from our national convention and business meeting in Chicago. This year s meeting was a grand celebration of AMT s 75 th birthday. In recognition of this milestone a book of AMT history and memories has been published. This is available for purchase from the national office for $59.00 plus shipping charges. The Western District of AMT was honored this year with many of our members and state societies receiving national awards at the awards banquet in Chicago. The list is extensive but these members deserve to be acknowledged one more time. Nominations for this award, along with other national awards, begins at the state level. To submit a nomination for this award the state must write a letter giving the reason for the nomination and submit it to the national office by the award nomination deadline of December 1. There is no formal form for this nomination. I would encourage each of our states to review the criteria for the various awards and actively nominate your deserving members for national recognition at our next meeting in Our 2015 national meeting will be held at the Hapuna Beach Prince Resort on the Kohala Coast, Big Island Hawaii. The dates for the meeting are June 22 25, In keeping with the resort theme it has been requested that we leave our suits, ties and formal wear at home and have a true island experience. Instead of the usual state baskets for the Welcome Party, states are being requested to provide appropriate gift cards for the party drawing. We will return to the state baskets at the 2016 meeting which will be held in the Southern District. Your Council members are responsible for writing the Councilor's Corner article for the AMT Events magazine. It is our goal to provide valuable, useful information in this column. If there is a subject you would like to see addressed please send your suggestion to your District Councilor. 4

5 We have been asked to stress the importance of reading all s you receive from AMT. The national office and your state officers are committed to using blasts only for important information, not SPAM. If you are not receiving anything from the AMT National office please check your SPAM settings to ensure these are getting to your regular box. The week of October has been designated as National Medical Assistant Week. This is a time for us to honor and celebrate our RMA members for their contributions to healthcare in general and to the success of the American Medical Technologists. One of the highlights of the each year s national business meeting is the Board of Directors election. This year there were two MT and one RMA position up for election. Current member, Everett Bloodworth, MT (KY) was reelected for another three year term. I was honored to be elected as the second MT member. Deborah Westervelt, RMA (MO) was elected to fill the open RMA position. Your new national officers for the next year are: Everett Bloodworth President, Jeff Lavender Vice President, Heather Herring Secretary and Jeannie Hobson Treasurer. Having been elected to serve AMT on the National Board of Directors this will be my final message to you as your Western District Councilor. I am honored and humbled by the confidence the delegates to our national meeting showed by electing me to this new position with AMT. I am committed to serving all of the members of our organization to the best of my ability. I would like to express a sincere Thank You! to all the Western District members and delegates who supported and promoted my candidacy. Serving as your District Councilor and working with you over these past five years has been one of the greatest privileges of my career. My replacement as District Councilor will be announced later this fall. I will continue to serve as your Councilor until January 1, I know you will give your new District Councilor a warm welcome and support them with the same enthusiasm you have shown to me. 6 Editor s Message Howdy y all, Finally! Winter is here and for some of us the snow is falling, and almost everyone is watching the movie Frozen for the hundredth time. 200 if you have a little one. I would like to take a moment to encourage you to attend our meetings we have a couple times a year. Take a moment, introduce yourselves, and make your voice heard. The next meeting we will be having will be in the spring of 2015, swing by and say hello! Also, if you have any stories, technology that you work with, or just want something published in this newsletter, send me an and we can work on it. If you are a student and would like to take part in my column Why I want to be a contact me as well. This year in 2014 we had our first continuing education meeting. We had two great speakers come out and speak with us for a couple hours. We had a couple people show up and earn some credits and had a good time. 7 Dr. Thomas Smith For the CEUs, Dr. Smith gave an excellent talk on the History of AIDS and his pioneering role in the Seattle area. He was very well spoken and I, for one, would LOVE to hear from him again! Thanks Dr. Smith for talking with us and all your work! 7

8 Heather Abbott Heather did an awesome talk on "Motivational Interviewing - Addressing Shame and "Stuckness" for Professionals and our Patients" in which she discussed what shame and guilt is and how to tell the difference in ourselves and our patients. Thanks Heather! 8
