Grand Knight s Report: Acting GK Jim Doty read a thank you note from Brian O Connor in appreciation for all we do for him financially and spiritually and another thank you note from Abby Edd Chinnock s grand daughter and recipient of one of our scholarship awards Jim offered information on free tuition at OSU for all members over the age of 60 who would be seeking new knowledge. Jim read an offer for the Blue Jackets Knights of Columbus game on November 10 th. The Blue Jackets will pledge one ticket to be given to any military for each ticket we purchase. St. Christopher Council is hosting a special liturgy of healing and hope for cancer patients, family and friends on Thursday, October 20 th if anyone wishes to attend. Call for more information. Squires: Mark Knight spoke on our Squires: Our young men showed their efforts extremely well at the Festival. They assisted with setup and tear down (the latter in driving rain and hail) and also ran their own Hockey Slap Shot Booth! Nobody was injured in the occasional flailing of hockey sticks and all had a good time. Mark sadly reported we will lose 5 Squires this year due to age and asks for all help in recruiting new members. We will market the Squires in the October blitz. The Squires along with all available Knights will take part in a tree planting project for parishioners here in the fall. More to come. The Squires three I believe will attend the Danville Retreat by the time of your reading here. Respect Life: This from last month as Edd was excused Edd will be heading up the bus trip to Washington, D.C. in January. October will be Respect Life month and we will be praying outside of an abortion clinic on one Sunday afternoons on October. Festival Food: Discussion arose as this as a standing committee as we have already been asked to manage the food for the festival again next year. Brother Wayne Patterson gave a report on the entire festival with tremendous thanks to both Knights and Squires for their efforts. He mentioned that Fr. Jim was very pleased. We shall advertise more next year to hopefully increase profits. The Memorial Mass: The Memorial Mass, held in honor of all deceased council and 4 th degree Knights is scheduled to follow the 11:15 mass on November 6 th. Please mark your calendars and attend. Brother Bog mentioned we shall all too soon be with our brothers and will undoubtedly appreciate those attending our memorial celebrations. The ceremony will only be minutes in length, but very formal. Communications: No Report Unfinished Business: The motion made last month by Edd Chinnock for the council to donate $XXX a year for four years to support St. Gabriel s Radio was discussed in energetic debate. Jim Anderson stressed the need for funds as the station was now purchasing a new signal which would help spread the Catholic word across the entire state. He also mentioned a quick vote would be matched by wealthy donors. Two million dollars is already fronted to purchase radio station 610 and replace the current Those against the idea did not seem to like the long term commitment of funds. The motion was finally tabled until October as neither person who made or seconded the motion was Business Meeting Minutes (Continued on page 3) 2
3 Business Meeting Minutes (Continued from page 2) available for any retraction or rewording of the original motion. Stay tuned for next month s meeting. Come if you have an opinion. New Business: Brother Wayne Patterson motioned to rollover one of our CD s for another year. Gene Ebert seconded. Discussion ensued on rolling over as a CD our dumping into a savings account. The motion was withdrawn to allow more investigation into the best option! Stephen Malott motioned for $XXX to be given to Brian O Connor to be spent on his new vestments. Jesse Garcia seconded. The motion was voted on and passed. Brother Gene Ebert motioned that up to $XXX be made available to any parishioner wishing to attend the new religious education series being offered at church, but being unable to afford the cost. Terry Reine seconded. Discussion proceeded on how to decide the inability to pay. Fr. Jim will be the deciding factor here. The motion was votes on and passed. More will still need researched on this. Field Agents Report: Stanley Krulia will conduct a Fraternal Benefit evening for all interested Knights and their spouses on Wednesday, September 28 th in our normal classroom. See what the Knight s of Columbus insurance, investments, and membership does for you. District Deputy Report: No report. Tim s contact information: Timothy (Tim) Hickey t_hickey@woway.com 2647 Dellworth St. Columbus, OH (614) th Degree Report: Sir Knight Tim Kujawa reminded all the 4 th Degree Carry the Flag Golf Outing at Cumberland Trails is set for Sunday, September 25 th. The proceeds benefit our veterans and the Chalmers P. Wylie Veterans Hospital. We need golfers or else the event will be cancelled. If anyone has a company or business wishing to offer gifts or wanting to attend, please contact Mike Croyle at Lecturer s Report: Lecturer Bud Joos told the tale of a Taliban lost in the desert dying of thirst. He stumbled upon a stand in the middle of nowhere where a Jewish gentlemen was selling ties! The vendor offered to sell the gentleman any handsome tie of his choice. The wanderer declined and begged for water all to no avail. The vendor mentioned the closest water was just over the hill and down in the valley at another stand run by his brother. The Taliban stumbled off in the direction of the water stand only to return hours later still without having the benefit of having received any water. The vendor innocently asked Did you not find my brother s stand? The Taliban replied more in anger than explanation YES, but he won t sell water to anyone not wearing a TIE! Good of the Order: Please keep in your daily prayers: All military personnel, active or veteran All Brothers in need, All the sick in our parish Ann Malott, Marjorie Miller, Caroline Hare, Gene Ebert, Maureen Patterson, Ed Loch needs visitors, call at , Scott Mucha, Mark Bailey (deceased this month), Aimee Bailey and family, Jacinta Hooker (deceased) Acting GK Jim Doty led us in the closing prayer, and we closed the meeting at 8:56 pm. Please contact me at or jcsthesing@aol.com to reserve an hour. Thanks, Jim Thesing Church Director October, 2011 Pope John Paul II s beatification to sainthood is meaningful not only to the world and to the Church but also to the Knights of Columbus. This month is the fourth in a series of eight addresses by John Paul II to the Knights of Columbus. FOR MORE THAN A HUNDRED YEARS the Knights of Columbus have distinguished themselves by their love for and loyalty to the Church, by their service to the poor and needy, by their defense of the handicapped and unborn, and by their strong support of family life. You stand forth as a shining example of the role of the laity in the life and the mission of the Church. The financing and maintenance of the façade of Saint Peter s Basilica and the colossal statues above is yet one more symbol of the dedicated spirit of your esteemed organization and of your devotion and fidelity to the successor of St. Peter. ---Pope John II s speech during ceremony for the completion of renovations on the façade of St. Peter s Basilica, Feb. 23, 1987 Respectfully submitted; Bud Joos, PGK Lecturer 3
4 Seton Squires Circle 4891 News Our Squires were actively involved with the recent Seton Parish Festival. Squires turned out in strength at 7 am Saturday morning September 3rd to assist with Festival booth setup. Many of these boys were coming off of late Friday night football games. They responded to support our brother Knights. I was very proud of them. They also operated a new booth event during the festival... Hockey Shot. Festival organizers appreciated the new attraction and have requested our return next year. Squires also contributed heavily to the festival tear-down effort. Our boys continued to work through some of the most adverse weather I have seen (it was hailing at one point). They are excellent examples of service to the parish! The month of October is a membership Blitz month for the Council. The Seton Squires are requesting that our Knights help recruit boys into our Squires Circle. Boys are eligible to join at the age of ten (10). Perhaps a child or grandchild would be a good candidate for membership? Our Circle faces an impending membership drain due to the loss of several eighteen year olds. Please encourage the young men in your life to consider membership in the Squires. You may contact me directly with any referrals. As always, thank you for supporting our Squires Circle. Esto Dignus! 5 Respect Life: October is Respect Life Month October is Respect Life month and I am writing this on Respect Life Sunday, October 02, Respect Life means respecting ALL life, from conception until natural death, so this article will review various ideas, news, events, and suggestions on how YOU can respect life. Conception Artificially preventing or terminating conception interferes with the life giving nature of sacramental marriage, so the Catholic Church forbids these practices. Furthermore, most people don t realize that the birth control pills used by so many women - Catholic and non-catholic alike - often will abort an embryo by preventing it from attaching to the uterine lining. The Church was way ahead of its time when it first banned these pills. It is a proven scientific fact that life begins at conception and the embryo has its own unique DNA, but that hasn t stopped our government from legalizing abortion and embryonic stem cell research. Embryonic stem cell research hasn t yielded a single viable treatment while adult stem cell research has produced many treatments currently being used (with many more in the near future). Strangely, this fact hasn t lessen the funding for embryonic stem cell research or increased funding for adult stem cell research. Abortion Over 50 million babies have been aborted since the Supreme Court legalized abortion in its 1973 Roe v Wade and Doe v Bolton decisions. Every year since then, hundreds of thousands of people gather in Washington, DC, to protest that decision and affirm the right of EVERY baby to live. According to the March for Life website, 250,000 young people attended the March this January if you want to join this awesome outpouring of enthusiasm for Life, join us this January! Our Council is again sponsoring a bus to Washington DC for the annual March for Life. This trip is a great opportunity for YOU to come to DC with us you only have to take one day off work or school as we leave on Sunday and return Monday night. This is a great trip that will inspire you to truly respect life as well as let our legislators know that. Contact me for trip details. During Lent, we will again be collecting baby layette items for Pregnancy Decisions Health Centers to help pregnant women chose Life instead of abortion. PDHC has saved the lives of many babies by offering pregnant women the help they need so they don t feel forced to get an abortion. Helping the Less Fortunate While abortion and Pro-Life get a lot of headlines, helping those in need is also part of Respecting Life. We have many opportunities to help others at Seton - like the annual Crank s Creek shoe drive. The Portsmouth Outreach campaign will be starting soon. Jesus tells us that when we help those in need, we help Him. Many Seton parishioners volunteer at the Griffin Center at Christ the King parish, and many more donate to the Griffin Center. This food pantry and clothing source supply many people down on their luck with badly needed food, clothing, and household goods. When you work there you really see the need and the gratitude of those we help. We can always use more volunteers. Military We support the brave men and women serving in the military through our Military Outreach, which sends care packages to wounded soldiers. Every Monday in the Adoration Chapel at 6:30pm we say a rosary for Seton members, children, relatives, and friends who are serving in the military, especially those overseas. Please join us. Elderly Respecting Life from conception to natural death means that we take care of our elders and do nothing to hasten their deaths. Assisted suicide and euthanasia are now legal in three states, but we must fight this wherever we can. We can be sure that more states will try to legalize this under the guise of improving their quality of life or lessening their suffering. While we all long for heaven, we cannot hasten our arrival in this way. Every year our Respect Life group goes to a nursing home to sing Christmas Carols and distribute Christmas cards made by the children in our religious education program. Please join us - we can always us more voices and anyone can sing Christmas songs. We also bring flowers to the nursing home in the spring - the residents really appreciate the way our small token brightens their rooms. Again, your help is appreciated. Death Penalty The Catholic Church does not forbid the execution of certain convicts after appropriate legal proceedings, but says it should only be used as a last resort. The Church believes that as long as the condemned can be safely incarcerated execution should not be used. In today s world, that means that in the US, Canada, Europe, and most of the developed world the death penalty should never be used. Only a few third world countries should allow it, and then only after extensive judicial review and certain guilt. We must petition our elected leaders to end this practice. Edd Chinnock, Council Respect Life Coordinator For more information on Pro-Life Activities ATTENTION: us at prolife@usccb.org Pro-Life Activities th Street, N.E., Washington DC (202) As a reminder, articles for the newsletter are due by the 25th of each month. This allows time for layout and editing and allows the newsletter to be sent out before activities for the month take place. Thank you for the help in this matter.
