2 The Gospel According to Greg Greg Taylor Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: if one falls down, his friend can help him up! Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not easily broken. Those are words from the fourth chapter of the book of Ecclesiastes words I ve been familiar with most of my adult life. But not until last week did I really begin to truly understand what King Solomon was writing about the power of Godly friendship and the difference it can make when you need it most. Last Monday morning, I received a phone call just before 5:00 a.m. from a nurse in the emergency room at Carle Hospital with words we are never really prepared for your father is very critical and your mother would like you to come as quickly as possible. A little before 10:00 a.m., I witnessed my father s death, along with Marla, my mother, my sister and other family and friends. When I went to bed on Sunday evening, I had a list of things to do on Monday that seemed to be of the uttermost importance, and yet as we stood and prayed in the emergency room at Carle, that to do list faded away and I found but a singular focus in my life. Death has a way of doing that to all of us. What happened following my father s death was both stunning and humbling friends and family reached out and began to minister to me and our family in wonderful ways. Within three hours of his passing, I had received texts and calls from several current and former elders, and a whole host of family and friends. Within a couple hours of sharing this news on my Facebook account, dozens responded with heartfelt words of encouragement and hope. Then the food began to arrive at my mother s house so much we couldn t fit it all in their refrigerator. Before the week was over, friends and family had traveled from New York, Florida and Wisconsin to encourage us in person, and despite ice and less than ideal travel conditions, over 100 from Clinton blessed us with their presence. This says nothing of the many, many cards and memorial gifts to Little Galilee that came, and continues to flow in even as I write this article. When I finally laid down on Thursday evening physically and mentally tired from the events of the week I had just one thought ringing through my mind: my family is blessed far beyond what we deserve. I write about this because it is obviously on my heart, and also to remind you what a difference you can make with a card, a call, a text and your presence. This was the first time I have been a position where I have lost a parent, and I was amazed at how helpful and therapeutic the blessings of others can be during this time. My dad was a great man in many ways and I ve known this for quite some time. But I had no idea how many different lives he touched until hearing testimony after testimony last week. We live in a busy world we are all up to our eye balls with to do lists and matters that seem urgent. And yet last week, so many of you slowed down for a while to dish out your own serving of blessing to my family and I will never forget it! Blessings, Greg

There is nothing they can do about anything except to wait for what is going to happen and then it happens, and they accept it. It is true we will have to accept things we cannot do anything about, but many things we can change if we try and do our part. Many dreams can be realized if only we apply the passion and the persistence to realize them. Pray for God to give us creative ideas and confess that we are creative. Have a positive attitude about yourself and your abilities. Enterprising persons don t wait for opportunities to come to them; they go after the opportunities. Jim Rohn Remember our calendars are focused on families important dates, get one today. The Salty Strings will be here on February 3rd, playing some very unusual instruments and singing songs that will warm your hearts. Our friend Kenny Honecker will be with us on the 17th for songs that we always enjoy. Then on March 17th we ll enjoy the sounds of our dear friend Julie McClarey. It s been a while since she has blessed us with her presence. She s a delight for us to have with all her talents. Joy comes from simple and natural things: mists over meadows, sunlight on leaves, the path of the moon over the water. Sigurd F. Olson Please call Norma Short at if you would like to sign-up for the trip to Goodfield Barn 2 for the Weekend Comedy. Then on the 23rd of March we ll be going to White Pine State Park for songs from Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline. The Moline Riverboat will be in May, just in time for spring up and down the Illinois River. Many more to follow! If you don t have wrinkles, you haven t laughed enough. Phyllis Diller The people we allow into our inner circle also affect our atmosphere. People we encounter occasionally don t affect us much, but those we spend a lot of time with do. We should make sure we surround ourselves, as much as possible, with people who are positive and full of faith. We all might be able to change our lives for the better if we choose positive people. You cannot see thoughts just as you cannot see angels, but they are real. Please remember to pray for the people of Haiti. Thank you notes have been received from Sue Turney & the Jim Taylor family. They are posted on the bulletin board by the church office.
