Adult Sunday School: There will be no Adult Sunday School during the months of June and July. He sat in the very front row so that she could properly witness the service. During this particular service, the minister was performing the baptism of a tiny infant. The little girl was taken by this, observing that he was saying something and pouring water over the infant s head. Turning to her father, she asked, Daddy, why is he brainwashing that baby? Speaker will be Ann Cashner of the Victory Prison Ministry. Lunch cost is $8.00. Hands on project for meeting will be bringing sewing supplies for the women in the prison ministry. You can clean out your sewing box or room and bring what you have. You do not have to buy anything unless you want to. They will take any supplies including sewing crocheting or knitting, needles of all kind including sewing machine needles, material, zippers, buttons, etc. There will be a box placed in back of sanctuary or hospitality room for your supplies or you may bring them the day of luncheon. All ladies of the church are invited to attend. We hope you will plan to attend this interesting luncheon. 5 CHILDREN/YOUTH MINISTRY VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL!! July 12 th through the 16 th First Presbyterian Church 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Theme: Milk of Kindness Project: Heifer International Kids will learn the importance of sharing and paying it forward. They will learn kindness towards ALL of God s creations. They will understand when God said to love thy neighbor, He meant it! P E A C E Books Can Change your Mind Try These Marsha Baltzell and Beth Ann Orth are teaching a class of 16 or so of us to read passages of the Bible with the heart rather than with just the mind. The process is called Lectio Divina (Divine Reading). Although we are using the Bible alone in our work, Robert Mulholland s book, Shaped by the Word, is related to this process, and might be helpful to anyone who wants to explore more deeply. Mulholland demonstrates methods of moving from an informational approach to Scripture (the common approach) and allowing God to speak to the spiritual self. Several months ago I reported on Sue Monk Kidd s novel, The Secret Life of Bees. Her latest book, The Invention of Wings, follows 35 years of the lives of Hetty, an urban slave in early 19 th century Charleston, and Sarah, the slave owner s idealistic daughter. It deals with the issue of race, and also explores what it means to be a woman. At one point Hetty tells Sarah that Sarah is free on the outside, but she is free within. Jeanie and I liked both books. They re New York Times best sellers. These books are available on the shelf under the library bulletin board during July. 6 PRAYER: The monthly newsletter and church website list all persons currently on the First Church prayer list. The Sunday worship bulletin lists names that were verbally submitted the previous Sunday, those turned in to the church office the ensuing week, and updates when there is new information. Please provide to the church office updated information concerning persons on the list whenever a change occurs in their circumstances. You are encouraged to keep your own personal prayer log of everyone named in the bulletin and newsletter and pray for these persons daily. You are also invited to be a part of the Intercessory Prayer Ministry that meets 1 p.m. every Monday in the lounge.
