2 Page 2 FROM THE DESK OF THE COMMANDANT THE HARDCHARGER Marines: COMMANDANT BOB CROSS We have now had an entire month off from meetings. Those of us that did not leave town were still busy with Last & Honors Details. We now have many things we are looking at for the coming year. Probably the most important is the Roadblock on September 21 st. Last year this brought us the majority of our income. Without this income we would not have been able to support the many veterans programs we were able to support this past year. We are also looking at many more programs that need our support. Please contact John Heffley and let him know you will be able to support this fundraiser. The next large event we are looking at for this year begins full time in October. However there has already been one event in June and have another event scheduled for August 13. This is our annual TOYS FOR TOTS program. Please contact Cletis Evans and let him know you are available to help with TOYS FOR TOTS. We also have members that have brought ideas for programs at our monthly meetings. This month Fred Dyne has been working on having a gentleman give us information on some benefits we have with the VA. The gentleman he is getting for us helped him a great deal with his personal benefits. Additionally I have some other matters I am working on to put before you (the membership) for consideration. These matters are best not published in the newsletter. Please plan on attending the August 19, 2013 meeting and help us make some decisions on the direction of the Detachment. We are still looking to members to step up and get into the leadership of the Detachment. We have had, for the most part, the same individuals in these positions for many years. We need to get them some relief and have some others step in to assist them with there jobs. Some of these positions are; Paymaster, Assistant to the Adjutant, Boy Scout Liaison, Web Sergeant, and many others. Please check with me and we will work on where you will be of the most benefit to the Detachment. Also don t forget that our website is up and running. Should you forget when and where the Roving mess is, that will be on the website. If you have lost your copy of the newsletter, they are on the website. If you want to make sure the By-Laws are being followed, they are on the website. We are working on getting more information on the website. We are hoping to have the uniform regulations with pictures to help you with uniform questions. This process is slow as there are only a few of us working on it at this time. With help of those with more experience in these areas, the faster we will be able to have all the necessary information on the website. I know this article sounds like I am looking for people to help grow the Detachment that is because I am. We can only grow the Detachment when we have a membership that is involved. I understand that there are those with medical and work restrictions that are unable to help. However, we do have members with some of these same restrictions that are extremely active. So please contact me so we can work on ways to make a stronger Detachment. Please consider your situation and if you have any available time please let me know and we will work together to find a great fit for you within the leadership of the Detachment. Semper Fi! Bob Cross Don t Forget, We Are Online

3 Page 3 THE CHAPLAIN S CORNER by Chaplain Bill Gividen "ACCOUNTABLE" Have you lived life, as you should? Have you grown your talents for self, for others, and for your God? Do you use your abilities to make this a better world for all to live in? Reflect on your life and see how you can better your works and your living. You are accountable to self, to your family, to your neighbor, to your community, to your nation; but most of all, to your God. You have the freedoms to fail or to move forward. Evaluate your experiences and grow from them. CHAPLAIN BILL GIVIDEN Your future depends upon many things, but mostly upon you. Only when you take responsibility for self can you grow from the burdens of past mistakes. Whatever your abilities, heritage, money, opportunities, or position, you are called to be a good steward of your assets and talents. God expects much from those with great talents. From all whom are given much, much will be demanded. Every day you need to hear a good song, read some good literature, view God's landscape of beauty, and have some reasonable, sensible conversations. Know that if you feed on the thoughts of your faith, your doubts will starve to death. Know that a positive attitude will give you courage and strength. Know that a willing heart will bring much happiness. Know that a loving soul will meet the needs of many. Finally, know that God will ultimately hold you accountable. Semper Fi, Bill & Catharine Gividen AUXILIARY PRESIDENT NANCY WALLACE Ladies, From the Auxiliary President Hope everyone s summer is going well. Our next meeting on August 19th is important since we had no meeting in July. Please try to attend as we have several things to discuss; the League s Roadblock, the Picnic and visit to Yew Dell Gardens. Another one of our members, Jake McDermott lost her husband Bill on July 15th. All of our prayers are with her and her family. Lastly, please keep Past Ladies Auxiliary President, Mary Klein in your prayers as she will be undergoing open heart surgery on August 23rd at Rudd Heart Center (located behind Jewish Hospital). The time of her surgery is unknown at this time. Updates will be given as they come in. See you at our August 19th meeting. 4 Page 4 THE HARDCHARGER A SALUTE TO War Memorials Part 1 By Alison G. Porter The war in Korea has been reffered to as the forgotten war (probably due to it s actions falling between two high profile conflicts) and though the battles of White Horse, Heartbreak Ridge, Pork Chop Hill and countless others have all been over since July of 1953, to many it will be a time that will be remembered for eternity. To some, the sights, sounds and actions taken will never be forgotten. Between the time of 25 June 1950 and 27 July 1953 the United States alone lost a devastating (recorded) 36,574 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines. Another 103,284 were wounded, almost 8,000 were Missing In Action and almost 5,000 were taken as Prisoners of War. In the fall of make the Forout to younger honor those first hand and those who perlished. Under Jefferson vid L Armthrough the man Major Black, donaers the dream Memorial be- 1992, a plan to gotten War stand generations, to who experienced it to immortalize ished was estabthe leadership of County Judge, Dastrong and efforts of ChairGeneral Carl D. tors and supportof the Korean War came a reality. The Korean War Memorial was dedicated 7 November 1993, in McNeely Lake Park (Louisville, Ky) on a hill overlooking the calm waters of the park. The memorial s monument was made by Muldoon Monument Company and features a timeline of the war in it s center. The left panel of the monument features a depiction of a free flying American flag (in bronze) while the right panel is etched with the names of those who perished from Jefferson County, forever immortal through their heroic actions and sacrifices. The foot of the monument includes the ever familiar emblems of our nation s fighting forces. Included at the foot is an outline of Korea with the 38th Parallel dividing North and South Korea. On a windy day the American Colors, the flag of Jefferson County and the POW/MIA Standard can be viewed flying just off to the left. At this time, just off to the left of the monument, three small wooden crosses can be found, which are sure have a story all their own. Within the Kentuckiana 729 Detachment, we have many who served during this time of conflict. The HardCharger thanks you all for your (and your families ) efforts and selfless sacrifices during this time.

5 Page 5 MAN S BEST FRIEND By Alison G. Porter The canine has forever been labeled as Man s Best Friend. There are those dogs that fetch and hunt and some that lead the blind through the course of their day. There are those that assist is search and rescue operations and those who earn their keep by protecting the home. There are others still who lay around and do absolutely nothing. Then there are those who go above and beyond nature s expectation and like their human counterparts, become something great, United States Marines. For those dogs that are chosen for Marine duties, there are a couple of options. There are some that patrol frontlines alongside their human Brothers-in Arms and there are others that serve as IED and Tactical Explosive Detectors. The Canine Marine can also suffer from com- bat related illness such as PTSD. One such Canine Ma- rine is the late Sgt. Beyco, a female Ger- man Shepherd born in Her mili- tary service resume being quite extensive includes a deployment to Iraq where she served as an Explosive Detection Dog from During her service she had numerous IED finds which in turn saved many lives. Sgt. Beyco re- tired from the Marine Corps in 2012 at the age of 10, highly decorated to include the Marine Combat Action Ribbon. At home she could be found at many military and veteran events and was a member of the Patriot Guard Riders (those who turn out in masses to honor fallen military and law enforcement members). Sgt. Beyco s last mission being to honor fallen Bardstown Police Officer, Jason Ellis. Whether in the field abroad or in her work at home she did her duty well. Sgt. Beyco was diagnosed with cancer to which she lost that battle 18 June Her service was held at VFW Post 1170 in Middletown to which her many admirers' came to bid her farewell. Her heartfelt service included; Marine Corps League Detachment 729 member Joe Dodson playing bagpipes (which he has done for countless fallen Marines), a Rifle Volley by MCL 729 Honor s Detail (Hank Ladoceur, Woody Marshall, Bob Ebert, Jim Young, Richard Schmidt, Bob Leblond, William Taylor and Ron Medley led by detachment Adjutant Allen Broussard) and MCL 729 member Dale Salyer playing TAPS on bugle. Sgt. Beyco was also honored with a Ride of Respect from the Patriot Guard Riders, her ashes being carried on the lead bike. She will continue to remain with her human friend and handler, Joe Sturm her ashes remaining with him. Sgt. Beyco will be truly missed and will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew her. She truly was Man s Best Friend.

10 Page 10 THE HARDCHARGER The Lighter Side of The HardCharger This Page Will Always Appear When There is Room, To Offer a Little Interactive Fun To Your Reading. Our newly elected Junior Vice Comandant, John Froehlich seems to be giving heartfelt advice to these two gentlemen. What is our Jr. Vice saying? Photo taken at Montford Point Scholarship Awards Banquet. Hey! Does anyone remember this blast from the past sung by The Cadet Marching Band? When this record was released by Peter Pan Records it was sold for a quarter. If you have one today in good shape you could get a healthy return on you investment. The flip side is Anchors Aweigh. If there was any question on who this squared away Marine from July s Hello My Name IS segment is, it is Mr. Hank Ladouceur. I do not believe anyone received bonus points for the correct pronouncement of his last name (not even Mr. Hank). Thanks to Mr. Hank for allowing the HardCharger to use his photo for Lighter Side purposes.

TO & FROM THE HARD CHARGER EDITOR I have said it once, I am saying it now and I will probably say it again, don t wait to visit call and check on those members that are close to you. Life here as we know it is a funny thing. One day it is here, the next it could be gone. No man (or woman) has the promise of another day. That s why the PRESENT is a GIFT. Also keep in mind that one does not have to be ill to be taken from us, people perish everyday for every reason. I don t say this to be negative or to make you rugged Marines run for the Kleenex box, I remind you of this from my own personal experiences, within the League and in my personal life. I have many of my own shoulda, coulda, woulda but didn ts (as I am sure everyone has). Personally, I don t enjoy the feeling of could I have done or said something more? Ok.the sermon is over, I m finished except to say there was a mistake in July s edition of the HardCharger newsletter. The correction is as follows. In the July HardCharger I published a comment which I misunderstood at the June Awards, What was published Only occurring one other time in the history of the 729 Detachment, there was a second 2012 Detachment Marine of the Year. The correction There have been at least five previous occasions where there have been a double Detachment Marine of the Year. I do, as the HardCharger editor, apologize for the miscommunication. Please readers, continue to keep me in check over any misstatements you may find in this publication.
