Flynn GREETINGS HELLO AGAIN FELLOW LEGION MEMBERS The Summer is upon us and it s time to go to our Summer Convention. There s a lot going on here at the Post right now with renovations, upgrades and a real push into the beginning of our year. We fell a little short of our goal to reach 100 % on our membership, so lets try a little harder this year and reach that 100%. We need a lot of help in order to accomplish all the different projects going on at the Post I hope we can count on you to be there so that we can continue to hold all the events we have planned. Thank you in advance. Bill Butler, 1st Vice Commander ADJUTANT REPORT Well summer is here, and the weather is heating up. Things are getting hot around the legion too. We have remodeled the back bathroom and wait to you see the changes that are going to be done in the TDY room. These changes have and will be made to better serve our members and guests. They are giving the TDY room a whole new look and it will be more specious also. We have reach 96% of our membership goal. Thank you everyone for your continued support. Let s strive next year to see if we can make 100% of our goal. Members don t forget to ask your friends that are eligible to join our happy family. Did you know that you now can receive the Echo on our website: John Smith Adjutant
4 FLORIDA AMERICAN LEGION Department Convention The American Legion, Department of Florida will be hosting its annual statewide convention July 5 8, 2018 at The Orlando World Center Marriott, Orlando FL. Approximately 3,000 American Legion members will be in attendance to include spouses and family members. Each year the state convention offers a wide variety of leadership training available to all members for the development and betterment of their local Post. The Department convention is not only a time where all posts gather to exchange ideas and reunite as a family; it is also a time where our members gather to elect the leadership for the new membership year and celebrate in the successes of the past membership year as it comes to a close. Please review this year s tentative convention agenda to see all the exciting events planned and unique learning opportunities offered. EVENT DATES: Marriott Orlando World Center July 5, 2018 July 8, 2018 June 27, 2019 June 30, 2019 June 25, 2020 June 28, 2020 July 1, 2021 July 4, 2021 UPCOMING EVENT DATES: HISTORIAN S REPORT The year has really flown. It is hard to believe that we have come to the end of another year for Post 8 activities. Following the Department Convention, the installation of new officers will take place a couple of weeks later. With that will come a change for me. I have been your Historian for four years and find that it is time to move on. After Chaplain Frances Harper decided not to return as Chaplain, I was nominated and elected for that office. I had to deal with a broken bone in my knee, a broken wrist, and a nasty infection as well as a move in the past year. For those reasons, I determined that a picture book was out of the question this year; that is why you did not see me around with the camera as often as before. As Historian I do have a book prepared. It is a narrative and will be going for competition just as the picture books did. After it returns from competition, you are welcome to view it or any of the books I have done. It has been an interesting time for me and I look forward to serving as your Chaplain next year. Please let me know of illness and deaths. If I happen not to be at the Post, there is a box in the TDY Room for the Chaplain, and, of course, the office needs to know so the information can be placed on the televised message boards. I have a lot to learn to fill this position. Your help will be appreciated Remona Knight Historian Labor Day Happenings September 3rd Fall Conference November 1-4, 2018
5 Other than providing a number for memorial services for deceased veterans, the highlight of this past quarter was the Memorial Day observance. We were kept busy that day performing various honor services. First we were at Swiss Village at 8am to raise their new flag as well as a rifle and taps salute. Then we headed to King s Pointe for a 10:30 rifle and taps salute to their current and past resident veterans. At 12:30 we posted colors and all the service flags at Post 8 followed by a rifle salute and taps. After the commander made his remarks on the observation, the Honor Guard provided hotdogs and hamburgers for the attendees most of whom provided a food dish to share with all. I would like to thank all the Honor Guard members who gave of their time for the whole day with the observances as well as helping with setup, cooking, serving and cleanup of the kitchen. We had one of the most successful Memorial Day observances that we can recall. We served around 200 meals that day. Thanks to all the attendees for helping to make the day the success that it was. 7 Greetings from your TDY Well, summertime has arrived with a BANG...thunder that is with all the rain we've had. Hope everyone had a good winter. Some big changes coming to the TDY Clubroom. We are remodeling the bar most likely the end of June. We will be temporarily working out of the back Bar, trying to serve you members as best we can, so we hope you will all be patient. I know it will be well worth the wait! Also we are mulling around the idea of having a Band Showcase, inviting different bands to come and perform.. Having you members come and listen and giving your opinions about the music. This will probably take place in the early Fall as I have to book bands at least 6 months in advance. Claudia and Jill are back in full force and were definitely missed. Duane will be used as a fill-in as needed and we thank him for helping us out at that difficult time this Winter. Monday night Bingo is still and asset to the TDY Clubroom and Wings n Things is still available. We will try to make the Lakeside Room as comfortable as we can with tall tables and bar stools to give you that bar room feel and hope you will all support us through this transition. So I want to give you members a big "Thank You" for supporting this Great Post 8! Pennies 40/8 Pennies for Nurse's Training by Ron Wlodarczak Debbie L. $1.00 Richard Fosie $2.65 John Weems $5.00 Lydia $10.00 JR $2.00 Whell/Baggie $5.36 Tucker $1.00 John & Shirley Tamlin $13.71 Thank you one and all for your Kindness. We build a better tomorrow by what we do today. June Bug TDY Manager
