2 September Board of Directors Minutes Rosimeri Tran September 18, 2012 The September board of directors meeting was held at Rosimeri and Seng s home. In Greg and Dale s absence, as per the bylaws the Secretary, Rosimeri was in charge of the meeting. We finalized and reviewed the koi show to do list to ensure everything was ordered and we set up a schedule of what needed to be completed. Bylaws were reviewed and finalized; they will be printed and distributed at the October general meeting for member approval. Rosimeri created a revised to do list for the koi show and reviewed the current club trailer inventory list. She passed around the floor set up of the koi show, discussed the updated vendor list, along with banquet head count. The awards were ordered and were to be delivered in a few days; she had already received koi food donations and expected more donations from vendors at the koi show. There was no further discussion and the board adjourned the meeting. Ultra Balance Koi Foods wants your koi hobbyists stories I m sure everyone of you has a unique story to tell regarding experiences you have had since you began this crazy hobby, both good and bad. 3 SEPTEMBER General Meeting Rosimeri Tran September 11, 2012 The September general meeting was held at the home of Rosimeri and Seng Tran. Members enjoyed viewing their main pond with their beautiful koi, along with Seng s baby koi set up. Many questions were asked regarding the filtration and the different varieties of koi in their pond. Our September meeting was our final meeting prior to our September koi show so there were final volunteer lists passed around along with any suggestions as to where to store our club trailer. Greg asked for a volunteer to be on the nominating committee and the volunteers were Lou Weaver, John Kendall and Sean Stephens, with Lou being Chair of the committee. They will put together a list of candidates for the current officers who will not be seeking an additional term; the positions are President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. After they prepare the list they will announce it at the upcoming October 16 th general meeting. Election for officers will be at the November general meeting. Seng presents a prize to a winner Greg addresses the club Everyone was asked to help support the koi show by volunteering their time at either setting up on Friday morning or by working the information booth and being koi show hosts, by helping answer any questions the public might have. There was some discussion on pond filtration. Seng discussed his pond design. His pond was designed and built by him; it is an in ground, liner pond, approximately 3,000 gallons, consisting of a bead filter, UV light, and two tote tanks, which helps keep the water clarity and water fresh for the koi. It was built in 2007, with a lot of hard work digging and hauling rocks in to build up the flag stone wall, which is very enjoyable to sit around and view the koi. In the beginning there were problems due to koi being introduced from various locations and not following the proper quarantine procedures. But by joining the club we both became knowledgeable in how to take care of the koi to prevent future problems, such as sores and poor koi health. There are probably close to 30 koi in our pond in various sizes ranging from 5 inches up to 27 inches. We feed them depending on water temperature; approximately one cup twice a day. We held our raffle and many members walked away with their wins, all prizes were donated by the Trans. The meeting was adjourned and members enjoyed some pizza and refreshments. AKCA Report Scientific/KHA: Rosimeri Tran Larry Isles, Editor of KOI USA, is in need of articles relating to koi health to help promote and teach good koi husbandry, and is reaching out to all KHA s to help fulfill this. At the present time, KHA Certification classes are not scheduled for 2013 but they do intend to hold a KHA lab at next year s Annual Meeting and make it available to all members wishing to attend Seminar: Carole is in contact with Bonnie Nakahara of the Hawaii GF&CA in regards to holding the wet lab/business meeting and judging seminar in Hawaii on the last weekend of June Welcome To The Pond! We would like to welcome new members to our club. We are happy they joined and look forward to seeing them at our club meetings and events. Welcome to: Ron Shatzki John McDaniel Janet & Geordie Jones Mike Przewoznik of Sumner Avenue Water Gardens T H E K O I W H I S P E R E R Information Sharing If you have ever used or are using a pond maintenance or repair service, please share what you know. We have members, prospective members, and the public asking frequently for references, suggestions, or just any information about anyone in this business. Pond maintenance companies allow us to relax a bit with our ponding duties, but we have to find one first. If you have anything to contribute, please send us an at ccksnewsletter@hotmail.com or announce it at the next meeting. P A G E 3
4 Winners of the 34th Annual CCKS Koi Show This year was like no other for the CCKS. We had a great show from start to finish. We had great fish from our own humble valley and from our Southern sister koi clubs. We also turned over record keeping duties to John and Barb Flowers and that relieved some pressure on our own club members. Our judges were the best you could get and after the judging offered their knowledge and services. They taught us some of the finer details of koi judging, health, management, and handling, then stuck around to help us tear down the equipment. We had help from the board and club members at large and even help from people not even in the club, though we would like them to join (hint, hint). When it was all said and done, we all breathed a deep sigh of relief for the accomplishment and conclusion of another great show. Then, a smaller group rejoined on Monday to clean the show tanks and prepare them for another year s storage. At the end, we took home our trophies and fond remembrances of good times with good friends and that s what really matters. Except, of course, the list. All this boils down to a list of the shining stars and how they compared with others. So with no further adieu, I present the list of winners: Grand Champion Showa Size 6 Alvin Au Reserve Grand Champion Showa Size 6 Cuyler Legler Reserve Grand Champion B Kin/Gin Rin Size 6 Rosimeri and Seng Tran Baby Champion Kohaku Size 2 Nelson Castro Best Mature Sanke Size 5 Don and Brenda Chandler Best Young Kohaku Size 4 Nelson Castro Best Long Fin Long Fin C Size 3 Gordon Chibana Show Chair Award Hikari Utsuri Size 3 Nelson Castro AKCA Award Kohaku Size 6 Cuyler Legler President's Choice Tancho Size 5 Nelson Castro Judge's Award Sanke Size 6 Alvin Au Best in Size 1 Kohaku Size 1 Bob Garrison Best in Size 2 Kohaku Size 2 Nelson Castro Best in Size 3 Hikari Utsuri Size 3 Nelson Castro Best in Size 4 Kohaku Size 4 Alvin Au Best in Size 5 Sanke Size 5 Don and Brenda Chandler Best in Size 6 Kohaku Size 6 Alvin Au People's Choice Showa Size 6 Cuyler Legler Friendship Awards Oregon Koi and Showa Size 3 Greg and Gloria Water Garden Society Mariano Rocky Mountain Koi Club Koromo Size 3 Nelson Castro Bakersfield Koi and Hikari Moyo Size 3 Nelson Castro Water Garden Society (Continued on page 5) Grand Champion Reserve Champ BabyChamp Reserve Champ B Best Mature T H E K O I W H I S P E R E R P A G E 4

7 Club Officers President Greg Mariano Vice President Dale Winn Secretary Rosimeri Tran Treasurer Harry Imfeld Board Director Mary Helen De La Torre Board Director Seng Tran Board Director Tony Palazzo President s Corner Wow! I m writing this the day after our 34 th annual koi show. What a great show and I had a marvelous time. We had a lot of help setting up Friday morning and I d like to thank everyone who pitched in. Our friend Mike Prezwoznik, with Sumner Avenue Water Gardens, left Santa Clarita at 3:00 a.m. to be here by 7:00 a.m. to help setup. Thanks Mike! He is also our newest member. The show ran smoothly and I want to give a special thanks to show chair Rosimeri Tran for all the hard work she put into the show and to cochair Tony Palazzo for his dedication and all the effort before, during, and after the show. Many, many thanks to all our officers and board members Dale Winn, Harry Imfeld, Seng Tran, Mary Helen Del La Torre, newsletter editors Sean and Amanda Stephens, Nancy Palazzo and Sandy Winn judging recorders and a whole bunch of our members whom I don t have space to mention (not to mention that I m past the newsletter deadline). John and Barb Flowers from Auroa, Colorado did a terrific job taking photos and running the judging program. I appreciate them for all their work and for making the long trip to help us. All our vendors were great and added to our success. Thank you to John Garrison our night watchman and to Scott Zaches who relieved him early every morning. Our banquet went very well and thank you to all our award sponsors. I m sure everyone had a great time. Just to let you know that our success was also due to our friends from our sister clubs including Bakersfield Koi and Water Gardens, the So Cal club, Nishikigoi club and those from other clubs. And thank you to all who entered koi. I hope someone puts a complete list of participants in this newsletter but you got to know, the show couldn t be done without them. In addition to the AKCA, the show really couldn t have been successful without our judges, Norman Call and Mike Hernandez. What a terrific job they did during and after the show giving some very useful information about major winners during the banquet AND helping to bag koi and break down when the show was over. By the way, work wasn t over on Sunday. A small group of us cleaned tanks and equipment on Monday. Workers included Bob Garrison, Tony Palazzo, Dale and Sandy Winn, Lou Weaver and a young man by the name of Gerardo. I m probably forgetting something or someone but it s late and it s been a long day. Congratulations to all participants. You re all winners. P.S. Don t forget that the nominating committee will present nominees for club officers at the October meeting. Nominees will also be taken from the floor.
