1 KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES November 2018 Volume 2 Issue 1 Recapping the 2018 Jones Family Reunion J. C. and Donna Goins hosted a second Jones Family Reunion September 15, We all deeply appreciate their hospitality for opening their home to us even as they were in the process of moving to a new home. We laughed, we hugged, we played, we reminisced. There were 45 of us from six different families. I finally managed to produce a legible family tree of ancestors and descendants that we posted on the side of Uncle Jay s shed. Family members hunted for their names to find their place on the chart. Two delightful young women, Marjorie Church and Martika Robinson, the oldest granddaughters of Marge and Art Church and daughters of Laura Church, braved Hurricane Florence to drive in from North Carolina to join us. Edward and Sarah Margaret Jones left a legacy of 10 children, 29 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren, and 25 great great grandchildren, give or take a few I may be missing. Our cousins now stretch across the United States from our origins in Ohio south to North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Florida and to the west in Alaska, Colorado and Texas. 3 Family Milestones DEATHS Condolences to the Church Family on the death of Margaret Church, 83, on July 27 th from Alzheimer s. She will be remembered for her humor and her love for her family. Condolences also to the family on the death of Laura s son, Anthony Bottoms, 27, on June 21 st. ENGAGEMENTS BIRTHS Brian Jones is engaged to Sophia Szeles. Congratulations to the handsome couple! Heather Frye gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Olivia Everly, on November lbs. 2 oz. and 18½ long ALZHEIMER S WALK Marjorie Church and Martika Robinson participated in a walk for awareness and a cure for Alzheimer s in memory of their Granny. They called their team Granny Girl to honor their grandmother Marge Church. ILLNESS Ed Jones, 96, is dealing with a serious illness. Thoughts and prayers needed, please. Emery Jones The Sanctuary of Geneva 200 Commerce Place Geneva, OH Favorite Family Recipe CHESS CAKE (Thanks to Belinda Burnett!) 1 st layer: 1 box yellow cake mix 1 egg beaten 1 stick melted butter 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts Mix these ingredients by hand. Spray a 9 x13 glass dish. Press mixture into dish and set aside. 2 nd layer: 1 8 oz. cream cheese (softened) 2 eggs beaten 1 lb. box powdered sugar. Beat with a mixer until blended. 4 Family History Trip on a Canal Boat On a chilly, rainy night in October, I joined a friend for a canal boat ride in Canal Fulton, OH. We listened to a paranormal researcher tell of her encounters with ghosts. Canal Fulton ran the tour the old-fashioned way with two large percheron horses on the canal bank pulling the barge along the waterway while a burly canal boatman used a long pole to steer. The storyteller told a little of the history of the building of the Erie Canal. In the early 1800s, Irish immigrants dug with picks and shovels 4 ½ feet deep for 300 miles. Many died of diseases like cholera and malaria and were buried in graves along the banks. The area where the passengers on this boat sat was covered with canvas for protection from the rain, but we could hear the footsteps of the boatman walking above our heads. When he tried to turn the boat around and head back to the dock, it got stuck in the bank. The boatman had to push it free with his pole while the horses were turned around to head back down the canal. Upon disembarking, passengers remarked on the boatman wearing a short-sleeved shirt in the cold. He laughed, I m sweating. I ve been working hard. That s when I remembered that in researching the Brooks and Dunn side of our family, I found the 1880 census helpful in recording that Great Great Grandfather George Dyer Brooks ( ) and his son George F. ( ) worked as canal boatmen in Lewistown, PA. George Dyer responded to the questionnaire that he was illiterate. The father and his 2 sons, George F. and Harry, had been unemployed for 8 months. By the late 1870s, railroads proved to move goods faster and cheaper, putting canal boats out of business, and the Brooks men out of a job. Harry Brooks ( ) married Jennie E. Dunn ( ) in They had six children: Nellie Carolus ( ), George W. (1887-?), Esther Pearl Gardner ( ), Bessie J. Martan ( ), Harry Clinton (1893-?), and Sarah Margaret Jones ( ). One additional Dunn connection to the canals is that the 1880 census listed Jennie s grandfather, John P. Dunn ( ), as a canal locktender. Oldest daughter Nellie married Frank Carolus and had two children. She died on July 9, 1910 in Lewistown at the age of 26 from complications after surgery. Esther married John Frederick Gardner, an electrician, on July 2, 1910, and raised six children in Lewistown. Jennie and Harry and their family probably moved to Cleveland, OH around Harry worked as a day laborer and a janitor during his lifetime.
