1 Midweek Kids Club Outreach (2hr session) Lesson Rundown The second of a two-part, midweek outreach using the metamorphosis of a caterpillar to teach kids how Jesus can change us. Jesus is Alive! 2 Jesus Is Alive! Luke 24 (PART 2) Memory Verse: Bible Story: How did God show His love for us? He sent His one and only Son into the world. 1 John 4:9a Jesus Is Alive! Luke 24 The hiker and Timmy are back. Timmy will come out of his cocoon as a handsome butterfly. You will need to add some beautiful wings, and re-wrap him in his cocoon before the kids arrive. You will also need a hand-held mirror, and the memory verse poster from the previous week. Science experiment from last week. 1. Opening Welcome kids. Go over your behaviour expectations. Open in prayer. 2. Object Lesson Review You will be preparing Resurrection Rolls with the kids. This will help review last week s teaching, set the stage for this lesson, and it will be the snack. : Set up supplies in groups, depending on how many kids you have in your program. Have a leader work with each group. Each kid will need 1 refrigerated crescent roll, I large marshmallow, a toothpick, a paper plate or piece of wax paper. Each group needs ¼ cup of melted butter or margarine, 2 tablespoons of cinnamon, and 2 tablespoons of white sugar, mixed together in a small bowl, and a lightly greased baking sheet. 1. Make sure oven is preheated to 400 F. Have an adult available to bake them. 2. Quickly review what happened to Jesus last week. Ask the kids how they know God loves them? (Bible says so. God sent Jesus.) Why did Jesus have to die? Do we all sin? What is sin? How did Jesus die? 3. Give the kids a plate or piece of wax paper. Have them place a crescent roll on the wax paper. 3 Have the kids take a marshmallow, and stick a toothpick into the flat end. The marshmallow represents Jesus body. Explain that in Bible times, bodies were wrapped in spices and cloth to prepare for burial. Using the toothpick, have kids dip their marshmallows into the melted butter, and then into the cinnamon sugar. Have them place the marshmallow in the centre of their crescent triangles. Carefully wrap the dough around the marshmallow. Pinch the edges tightly to seal in the marshmallow. Tell the kids that the dough represents the tomb Jesus was buried in. Place on the baking sheet, and bake in preheated oven about 15 minutes, until golden brown. Tell the kids Jesus was buried, but the story didn t end there!! 3. Memory Verse Game: Butterfly Toss Memory verse poster, plastic butterflies or caterpillars (Dollar Store) - 1 for every kid Using the poster, explain the verse to the kids. Make sure they understand what it means, and why they are learning it! Have kids pair up, and give each pair a plastic butterfly. Challenge them to toss it back and forth, with each partner saying the next word in the verse, as they catch it. Kid #1 Kid#2 How did God show, etc. Finish by having half ask question How did God show His love for us?, and other half answer He sent His on and only Son into the world. All: 1 John 4:9 (You could have boys ask, and girls answer. Then switch and have girls ask and the boys answer.) 4. Skit/Bible Story: Jesus Is Alive! Bible, Timmy as a butterfly in his cocoon, the science experiment from last week, baked and cooled rolls, small paper plates, napkins, juice, party noise blower, balloons, certificates for kids who pray and ask Jesus to be the Lord over their lives. 4 Spiel: Hiker tells the kids that while they are waiting for the snack to bake and cool they will look at the science experiment from last week. Remind kids about the dirty pennies. What did they represent? (Each of us, dirty with sin.) What did we put them into? (lemon juice which represented Jesus blood, shed for each of us, on the cross) Reveal the shiny pennies! Explain that when we believe God loves us, that Jesus His Son died for our sins, we become new! Clean and shiny like the pennies! Our sins are washed away! *(During this explanation there has been various noises coming from Timmy s cocoon!) Hiker quiets the kids, and asks if they hear anything? They hear the noise and hiker walks around trying to figure out where it is coming from. (Have fun with it! Ask a kid if he is making the noise. Is it coming from behind the door? Maybe it s from the trash can? etc.) Kids tell Hiker the noise is coming from Timmy s cocoon! Hiker shushes everyone, and asks them if they can hear that?! From cocoon, a muffled voice is asking for help! Timmy needs help getting out of the cocoon. Hiker, or a kid, helps Timmy get free from the cocoon. Hiker and the kids oohh and ahh because Timmy has changed! He has a set of beautiful wings! He is no longer a hungry, dull, caterpillar! He has been transformed into a handsome butterfly! Timmy is beside himself! He is so excited! He asks Hiker is she has a mirror, so he can see what he looks like now. She pulls a mirror out of her backpack. Hiker tells Timmy that it was God who changed him into a beautiful butterfly! God had a plan for Timmy, and God has a plan for each kid here tonight! Timmy wants to know what s been happening while he was in the cocoon. Hiker shows Timmy the shiny pennies, and reminds him of last week s Bible story where Jesus died on the cross. Timmy remembers, and he is sad! It s such a sad story! Hiker tells him that that s not the end of the story! She says she was just getting ready to tell the kids the rest of the story! Hiker takes a crescent roll. She has kids help her tell Timmy what the different ingredients represented. (Marshmallow is Jesus. Melted butter and cinnamon spices, and the crescent roll is the tomb.) 5 Hiker tells how Jesus was buried, a stone rolled in front of the tomb, and guards placed the stone in front of it. Use your Bible to tell the rest of the Bible Story. Closing: Hiker takes a baked resurrection roll, and opens it. Where is Jesus? He is not here. Jesus is alive! He died on the cross, to take the punishment for our sins! The good news is He rose again! Just as the marshmallow has disappeared, when Jesus tomb was opened, the stone rolled away and Jesus was gone! Why? He had risen from the dead! Amazing! That s how powerful God is! That s how much He loves you! (Can eat resurrection rolls here, or at end.) Now, if you are sorry for your sins, and believe Jesus died for you, you can be part of God s family! God s love and Jesus shed blood makes you shiny and new like our pennies. It transforms you, like Timmy changed from a dull caterpillar to a beautiful butterfly. You are made new, and someday you will live in heaven with God forever! Timmy wants to know where heaven is, and what s so great about it. The Hiker tells him about heaven, and how there s no sickness, no sadness, no one gets angry. There s no sin! She tells Timmy that because Jesus died for our sin and rose from the dead three days later, we can live there forever! Timmy is really excited! He really wants to go there. He loves God, and believes God loves him too. Hiker invites any of the kids who love God, and want to invite Jesus to be Lord of their life to say this prayer. Dear Father God, I love you. Thank you for loving me. I believe Jesus is your Son. I believe He died on a cross for my sins. I am sorry for all my sins. Please forgive me. I want Jesus to be Lord of my life. In Jesus Name, Amen Hiker tells kids that if they prayed that prayer, and really meant it - they are saved and part of God s family! Yay! Celebration! The Bible says that when even one person is saved, the angels rejoice in heaven! (Luke 15:7) And, just like Timmy transformed from a caterpillar to a beautiful, now the kids are transformed too. Sure, they look the same on the outside, but inside they are shiny and clean, like pennies! Now, they are filled with God s love. J e s u s I s A l i v e Page 5

6 So now what? Now they want to show God s love to others, and tell others about God s love. They need to read the Bible, talk to God and because they love Him, do what the Bible tells them. : Make sure all who prayed have a Bible at home. Provide a Bible to those who don t. Also Timmy provide is so each happy of them and excited! with a certificate Hiker gives welcoming him his very them own into little God s Bible. family. He flies away to find a quiet place to read it. He wants to learn all He can about God! Hiker and the kids wave good-bye to Timmy! 5. Craft: (Kids will complete last week s Telling the Story craft.) Ziploc bags from last week with cards 1-3 completed, 1 blank index card, popsicle stick, pompoms, toothpick, tape 1. Have kids glue a toothpick to the middle of index card for the butterfly s body. 2. Use a marker or pencil to draw wing outline. 3. Spread glue to fill in wing outline. 4. Place pompoms on glue to fill in wing outline. 5. Let dry, and tape a popsicle stick to back of card. 6. Closing - If time, let kids use their cards to retell story in pairs. 6. Extra time?: Have a caterpillar relay! All you need is the kids and a large playing area. 1. Divide kids into teams 2. Have them stand in single-file lines at one end of playing area. 3. Show them how a caterpillar actually moves. To move like a caterpillar, stand straight, bend at waist and put your hands on the floor, keeping your legs straight. Now, walk out with your hands, and then walk feet towards hands. 4. On Go!, kids walk like a caterpillar to other end of room, and back to team. Next kid in line goes in same manner. First team to have all players complete relay wins. Optional - If time is short, when 1 st kid reaches middle of room, have next kid on team begin, and so on, until everyone on team has had a turn.
