1 SAINTS ALIVE 2016 Vol. #11 No. #6 Dear Saints, The season of Advent begins at the end of this month (Sunday, November 27 th ). It s a time of hope, peace, joy and love as our Advent candles remind us each week. But most of all, it s a time of expectation where we look beyond Christ s humble first coming as a babe in a manger, to His second coming in glory and splendor; when every eye will see Him. In this time of anxiety about the future of our country, it s important as Christians to remind that no matter who holds the position of leadership, Jesus is still Lord of all and He is the one who has sovereign authority over our lives. The tensions in our nation run deep and have brought division and hostility among us, but as followers of the Prince of Peace, our lives should not reflect what the culture around us displays. We are people of HOPE who know that there will come a day when Jesus will put an end to all hostility and hatred, when all wrongs will be set right and true peace will reign (Isaiah 9:7). We are a people of PEACE who serve as Christ s ambassadors of reconciliation through the message of salvation through Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:19-20). We are people whose lives should reflect the JOY from knowing God s love and mercy and the transformational power of His Spirit at work in our lives (Romans 15:13). And we are most importantly, a people who have the privilege to share God s LOVE in countless ways to a world that has grown cynical and callous to the Truth; to introduce them to the One who loved them to the end (John 13:1). May this Advent season grant us the opportunity to reflect on these four great themes of our faith and call us to deepen our understanding of how they not only enrich our lives but also serve to reflect our faith to others. In Christ s love and with mine, Mtr. Travis+ Mother Travis Excellent Adventure In January of 2017, Mtr. Travis will be participating in the Anglican Leadership Institute. It is an invitation-only program which will place her among fifteen participants from all over the world. The purpose of this program is to grant men and women with a proven track of ministry a chance to spend a month in community under the guidance of expert leaders who have exercised faithful and effective ministry in their own contexts. 2 From January 2 through January 26, Mtr. Travis will be in Charleston, South Carolina engaged in bible study, leadership development, and sharing and learning with the other participants about ministry in each of the cultures represented. It s a wonderful opportunity that the Vestry has both approved and supported. You can learn more about it from the institute s website: Mtr. Travis absence will cover three Sundays (Jan. 8, 15 and 22) and there will be special speakers each of those weeks. Also, Mtr. Trina will be available for any pastoral needs or emergencies that may arise. Please pray that this time will serve to renew, refresh and strengthen Mtr. Travis in her personal faith and as our rector and spiritual leader. WONDERFUL ALL SAINTS WOMEN S RETREAT HELD Mtr. Trina McCarthy led a retreat for the women of All Saints on October 7&8. The topic for the weekend was Come Away My Beloved. Friday evening started with a scrumptious dinner at Backwoods Crossing. The evening continued with an introduction to the retreat and Evening Prayer at the home of Bonnie Kistler, our gracious hostess. Mtr. Trina gave us an assignment to think about for the next morning; we were to remember the most fun we had ever had. The evening ended with a time of socializing, feasting on gourmet popcorn and other treats while watching movies. We all woke up refreshed on Saturday morning and participated in Morning Prayer. Then we enjoyed a delicious breakfast prepared by Betty Ann Watkins. Everyone settled down for a day of teaching and reflection with Mtr. Trina. We shared our homework and discussed how God had blessed us with times of joy. Although our stories differed, we bonded around the joy we recalled. Mtr. Trina fed our spirits by teaching us ways to rest in God s presence and joy, taking time away to be with Him alone. The teaching was punctuated by a delectable lunch. The group thanks everyone who contributed to making the weekend an enjoyable and enlightening experience. 3 7 THINGS CHURCH MEMBERS SHOULD SAY TO GUESTS IN A WORSHIP SERVICE by Thom S. Rainer Here are some things you should be saying to all of your church guests. 1. "Thank you for being here." It's just that basic. I have heard from numerous church guests who returned because they were simply told "thank you." 2. "Let me help you with that." If you see someone struggling with umbrellas, young children, diaper bags, purses and other items, a gesture to hold something for them is a huge positive. Of course, this comment is appropriate for member to member as well. 3. "Please take my seat." I actually heard that comment twice in a church where I was speaking in the Nashville area. The first comment came from a member to a young family of five who were trying to find a place to sit together. 4. "Here is my address. Please let me know if I can help in any way." Of course, this comment must be used with discretion, but it can be a hugely positive message to a guest. 5. "Can I show you where you need to go?" Even in smaller churches, guests will not know where to find the nursery, restrooms and small group meeting areas. You can usually tell when a guest does not know where he or she is to go. 6. "Let me introduce you to." The return rate of guests is always higher if they meet other people. A church member may have the opportunity to introduce the guest to the pastor, other church staff and other members of the church. 7. "Would you join us for lunch?" I saved this question for last for two reasons. First, the situation must obviously be appropriate before you offer the invitation. Second, I have seen this approach have the highest guest return rate of any one factor. What if your church members sought to invite different guests 6 to 12 times a year? The burden would not be great; but the impact would be huge. Presume your church has two first-time guests a week. Over the course of a year, the church would have 100 first-time guests. With most of the members being genuinely guest friendly, you could see half of those guests become active members. Attendance could thus increase by as much as 50 persons every year. Thom S. Rainer is the president of LifeWay Christian Resources. DHC ALL SAINTS CHAPTER ADMITS TWO NEW MEMBERS Renee Bell and Blair Case were admitted to The Order of the Daughters of the Holy Cross on September 18, 2016 at All Saints Anglican Church, Tallahassee, FL. It turned out to be unique Since Blair had moved to Panama City and was not able to be present. She wanted to take her vow with Renee so she was present virtually. Blair (via speaker phone) and Renee took their vows together. It was a joyous time. If you may be interested in being part of Daughters, contact Jean Williams at jeanpdon@comcast.net. Dear Lord, LAST WORDS PRAYER Please give me: A purpose I can live for, A self I can live with, and A faith I can live by. Frank Freed, Santa Ana, CA In GUIDEPOSTS, May

Bring your favorite Hors' D'oeuvres to share. ONE SIMPLE WAY TO PRAY FOR MISSION How do you pray for mission work when you don t have very many details? Or, you don t know the places where our partner missionaries are working? Or, you can t pronounce their names? Or, you don t understand their context? Or or or Sometimes we can t give a lot of details of missions for security reasons, and sometimes we get so overwhelmed with daily life and trying to accomplish simple (and not-so-simple) tasks that we don t communicate as often or as well as we should. Still you want to pray. But, how do you pray? During the recent August mission in Kenya, led by our mission partner Gech, there s an amazing story to share that could only have happened because someone(s) was praying! And, it's One Simple Way to Pray for Mission. Gech and his team were visiting a new area where they had not been before. They trained 40-plus clergy and lay leaders for three days, and then went out in the day for door-to-door conversations about the Gospel. In the evening, there were open-air preaching events. A group of people came one evening to disrupt their outreach program. Suddenly, out of nowhere, hundreds of bees swarmed into the meeting, but they stung only those who came to disrupt it! It was almost like an Egyptian plague at the time of the Exodus. By the end of the mission, 43 people had come to faith in Christ and a new church had been planted in the community under the authority of the local Anglican church. In the three other places where the August mission took place, two struggling churches were revived, a third church encouraged, and 250 more people came to faith in Christ or renewed their faith in Christ. This story, though, has taught me a very powerful lesson about prayer. The Kingdom of darkness is always opposed to the Light of the Gospel. The powers of oppression will always oppose the message of the cross of Christ that sets people free. So, we can expect opposition any time there is mission any time there is an effort to advance the Kingdom of God. We just don t know how that opposition will come or what form it will take. And, the prayer? For the forces of darkness and oppression to turn upon themselves and disorganize themselves. That s what happened with the bees. Someone was praying probably a general prayer. But, God knows how to take those general prayers and apply them in 4

5 amazing ways in very specific situations. Who would have thought to ask God to send a swarm of bees to disorganize a group of unruly youth who wanted to disrupt the work of God at a particularly remote place in Kenya on a particular day? Praying for mission doesn t require us to know all the details. We only have to know the common issues that will be faced and pray into them. Lord, disorganize the plans of those who are intent on disrupting your mission. Let your word go forth and not return to you void, but accomplish that which you have purposed. (Isaiah 55.11) From the September 2016 newsletter of The Rev. Alison Barfoot Global Mobilization Ministries Inc. in Uganda: OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD CRAFT DAY The Operation Christmas Child Craft Workshop was great fun. We had several separate craft-making stations and lots of good eats. Barbara Plant, Karalee Kleehammer, Sara Jean Wainwright and others made the cutest plastic egg caterpillars. Jean Bernard and Lois Berry stuffed dozens of construction and sewing kits. Cheryl Jackson made fishing kits and decorated clothespin airplanes assembled by Sue Klos. Becky Buchanan made tongue depressor puzzles while Henri Thursby and Mtr. Travis created lovely duct tape pencil cases. Betty Ann Watkins, Sally Roberts, Jean Williams, and Mtr. Travis made bracelets and decorated necklaces. Additionally, the group made Christian coloring books and started on jump ropes with materials donated by Sue and Jean W. Becky and Henri also added materials to the ones Jean Williams collected during the year and helped to set up for the event. Thanks to all of you who made this event a roaring success. 5

6 Praline-pumpkin cake Submitted by Mary Smith This is an upside down cake. So you make the topping and put it in the bottom of the cake pan, then put the cake batter in. Bake it, and then turn it over on a serving dish. Topping ½ c butter or margarine ¼ c cream 1 cup packed brown sugar ¾ cup coarsely chopped pecans Preheat oven to 325. Melt butter, brown sugar, cream in saucepan. Cook over low heat until butter is melted and all clumps are out of the sugar. Pour into 2 ungreased 8 or 9 inch round cake pans (or any other size you use for a single cake mix). Sprinkle with the pecans. Cake: 1 yellow cake mix 1 cup canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix) ½ c water 1/3 cup vegetable oil 4 eggs 2 tsp pumpkin pie spice Mix up cake on low until moistened, then on medium speed 2 minutes. Pour batter over the pecan mixture in the pan(s). Bake minutes. Cool 2 minutes, turn out onto serving dish. Pumpkin Bread Submitted by Susan Klos Pumpkin bread makes great gifts at Christmas. I used to cook my Halloween Jack-O-Lantern and mash it in the blender. This gave me plenty of pumpkin for gift breads. I always had a couple of loaves on Thanksgiving and Christmas morning so I wouldn t have to do breakfast for the family. 3 ½ cups of flour (in my hippie days I used unbleached flour doesn t make a difference.) 2 teaspons baking soda (I like this recipe because it doesn t use baking powder) ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon nutmeg 1 teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon allspice ½ teaspoon ginger 3 cups sugar 1 cup oil 4 eggs 1 15 oz. can pumpkin, or 2 cups fresh pumpkin, cooked and blended 2/3 cup water (omit if using your blended pumpkin) 1 ¼ cups pecans, chopped (some of my family don t like nuts so I make one loaf with and one without) Combine the dry ingredients and the wet ingredients separately. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients mixing well. Add nuts last. Pour into ¾ full into two or three loaf pans (depending on size) and bake for 1 hour at 350 degrees. The original recipe also calls for 1 container of cream cheese frosting, into which you stir ½ tsp pumpkin pie spice. Spread this over cake and sprinkle with additional pecans. (I prefer it without the frosting.) 6
