2 P AGE 2 Real Reason for Christmas Susan Says.! V OL UME 17, I SSU E 4 Ah, Dearest Jesus, Holy Child Make Thee a bed, soft, undefiled Within my heart, that it may be A quiet chamber kept for Thee. From From Heaven Above to Earth I Come written by Martin Luther in I bet many of us had this verse for memory work at one time, at any rate we ve certainly sung it before. It is one of my favorites among so many wonderful Christmas songs. It says it all! We invite Jesus to make a home in our heart. No matter how busy and crazy our lives get at this time of year, may we keep a quiet, uninterrupted place available in our hearts for our sweet Baby Jesus. I am currently teaching 4 year olds--and my goodness they are getting excited about Christmas! Today I watched a little girl spread a baby blanket on the floor. She then got 2 silk-like scarves and spread them on top of the blanket before gingerly laying down the baby doll, and then bowed to the doll until her head was on the floor. (I m learning much about different ethnicities and cultures and continued watching.) She then stretched her arms out to keep others away from her baby doll. With great authority she told the others to be quiet so that their king could have a quiet place. The previous verse immediately came to mind. A quiet place for our King. This precious little girl continued to tell anyone who would listen, that Baby Jesus was their brother and king. I wonder if I could be bold enough to share in such a way. But, she made me think--and remember that no matter how crazy and busy this time of year gets--it is so crucial to keep that quiet place in our hearts for our Brother Jesus. May we be bold in sharing the story--the real reason for the season--and above all, may we all have that special place, a soft, undefiled, quiet chamber kept just for Jesus. A blessed Christmas season to each of you! Karen McClelland Christian Materials Coordinator The LWML-Michigan Website The Media Coordinator and other members of the Communications Committee are working hard to keep the site current and full of great information. Go to and check it out! And help Waldo by sending the Media Coordinator a picture of your mite box in use (if you haven t already)! And check out our FaceBook page, too! For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 What was the Best Gift you ever received at Christmas? Mine was a doll called Kissy! She was almost as tall as me. All you had to do was pull her arms together President Susan Gruber and she would give you a kiss. I was about 6 years old and it was the best Christmas ever! We would always have a Christmas Eve party and while we were at our Christmas Program at church Santa would come to our house. It was always lots of fun to be with family and friends. Unfortunately as family members have passed away it is not the same anymore but we still celebrate the BEST GIFT of all and that is JESUS! Jesus was born, lived a perfect life, and then died on the cross for us! We have the promise of eternal life in heaven with Him! What an awesome gift! May you always show God s gift to us, His Love, to everyone you meet and to others you haven t met through our mite offerings! We have many things to anticipate this coming year. The National LWML Convention in Mobile, AL will be June 20-23, I m looking forward to seeing someone from each Zone attend this convention. Take advantage of the bus! Be dropped off at the door of your hotel and the convention center. There will be Officers, Mission Grants and By-Laws to vote on. I pray you will consider going to check out how things happen at a National Convention since we will be Co-hosting the 2021 Convention in Lexington, KY. Thank you for sending Pastor Bakker, MaryBeth Heikkinen, Melissa Maliskey and myself to the Follow the Leader Conference in St. Louis this past November. We will be bringing conferences to Michigan in November 2019! Look for more information on conference dates and locations in Change happens all the time! A few things to consider in 2019 to encourage new women to be interested in LWML by using the word participants or women instead of members we want to focus on relationships and making connections rather than membership. Consider renaming your zone rallies. The word rally is dated. An alternative choice for a gathering could be Festival, Mission Fest, Spring Workshop, Spring Fling, Spring Inspiration etc. Be creative! May we all celebrate the The Best Gift at Christmas and throughout the New Year! MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR! Susan Gruber, President LWML MI DISTRICT

A gift plan could be a bequest, IRA designation, charitable trust, gift annuity or other instrument that will eventually terminate with a gift for LWML. Those who have already completed plans through an LWML Gift Planning Counselor will automatically be included as members in the Legacy Circle. Its purpose is to give glory to God for those donors who are giving witness to the value of LWML in their lives and for their vision inspired by the Holy Spirit to build LWML ministries for generations to come. If you have made a plan to give to LWML National or LWML Michigan District whether through Gifts of Love or not, Let Sandy Hardies know at hardiessandy@gmail.com or Good News Gift annuity rates have increased! In good Martin Luther language, what does this mean? First, a charitable gift annuity is a contract between a donor (you) and LCMS Foundation as administrator. You fund the gift annuity with cash or appreciated securities. In return, you receive a partial tax deduction for your donation, plus receive a fixed stream of income from LCMS Foundation (as the gift annuity administrator) for the rest of your life. The remainder amount of the gift annuity can be designated to LWML which will be distributed after you are called to your heavenly home. Second, here are the new rates (old rates are in parenthesis): At age 60, 4.7% (4.4%); age 70, 5.1% (5.6%); age 80, 7.3% (6.8%) and age 90, 9.5% (9.0%). 4 P AGE 4 V OL UME 17, I SSU E 4 The Joy of Fellowship and Service Joy Markus, of POBLO, was our speaker and we had a great turnout! We expected 45 but had 58 or 59 come. Four pastors, two men, and women, some with daughters, made up the crowd. Joy's presentation lasted an hour with her answering many questions the last twenty minutes of that hour. Our ingathering was generous. Freewill offerings were received for both POBLO and Joy. We had an ice breaker activity that included giving to the mite box placed at the center of each table. "Mrs. Scuttlebutt" a.k.a., Abbie Cutler, came to encourage women to attend the 2019 LWML Convention in Mobile, AL. For the gifts of love, we filled an 18 gallon plastic tote with pantyhose, knee hi's, and winter tights for Fort Wayne Seminary wives. A lady from a zone church was personally having them delivered to the seminary. Hope this gives you some good news to share about the LWML Grand Rapids Zone Fall Rally. It was a JOYful day. In Christ, Linda Blain, LWML Grand Rapids Zone Co-chair The Joy of Saving Mites for Jesus Look Mom! Money. Three-year-old Leland Ross III squats down and picks up the nickel he spots in the Wal-Mart parking lot. His mother, Narissa Ross, became very serious about filling her mite box this summer after attending the Port Huron convention as Gateway Zone YWR. For years I dutifully had a mite box in my house, but never really filled it as I should have. I never really appreciated the significance of the coins until I saw the mission presentations this summer. How could anyone fail to be touched and motivated after seeing LAMP representatives tell of that first airplane? Or seeing how POBLO literally saves the lives of people who want nothing more than to follow Jesus. Now my box is placed on my kitchen counter where I can t fail to add my change. I brought my son one of the special children s boxes too. Mites are a bit of challenge to describe at his age, but he quickly fell into calling it his Jesus box. Placed next to his piggy bank, he gets to chose where any found coins will go. I try to leave the choice up to him by asking if he wants his change to go in his Jesus box or his piggy bank. He sometimes asks about the value of a coin (why are dimes smaller than nickels?) if he has two or more to save, he usually always says he is going to add his coins to his Jesus box. Quite a mature choice for a little boy with no income who is learning that the piggy bank money is for him personally and the Jesus box will be given away to help others." Leland is quite clear about what happens to those coins. They help tell people about Jesus. He loves everyone. Narissa s mother, Darci Kirby, does point out that Leland s crusade to fill his box does have one draw-back. His grandfather Doug is not sure that any money found in his pick-up necessarily qualifies as lost money eligible for collection as Jesus-box coins. Leland has learned to clean-out Grandpa's little coffee stash whenever Grandpa takes him for a ride. Should I tell Doug that I have filled my mite box from his cab for years? Children s mite-boxes can be a great way to introduce LWML into the daily lives of children and teach them how they too can help tell about Jesus. Ask your society leader to order some of these boxes from Marge Spencer, Mission Awareness Coordinator, to share with your children, grand-children and Sunday School. Jeanne Burton-Lee, Gateway Zone The Joy of Togetherness Battle Creek Zone and Gateway Zone teamed together for dual Retreat at Camp Lutherhaven in Albion IN November 9 and 10. They invited Family of God Lutheran Church from SW Detroit. Pastor Hill and wife Susan and team members Amanda Becker and Vicar Tyler Cronkright presented their work among the very poor, addicted, and homeless population. The spirit of God moves among the Family of God even at Camp Lutherhaven, as spontaneous prayer broke out, and many, many blessings that weekend in fellowship and servant projects. $ collected among the group and abundant paper products donated for their work in Detroit. Sweet hugs were exchanged and blessings of Thanksgiving to God for the work being done in the name of Jesus Christ who loves us all into HIS Family of God. Renita Wollberg, Battle Creek Zone President

5 LWML IN ACTION P AGE 5 The Joy of Learning What LWML is All About The YWR that the Multi-Lakes Zone sent to convention this summer was a woman who knew nothing about LWML, which is exactly the women that we like to send because we feel it is the absolutely best way to learn about LWML. Her name is Rebecca Torrey. She is married, has two children, a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Fenton, and is the leader of the MOMS (mothers of children of all ages) group. I was so excited that she wanted me to submit her name as YWR. On the last day of convention, she and another young woman from Trinity who was a first-time delegate were so happy to have been invited that they wanted to host a fun event at Trinity to bring women of all ages together for LWML. So Rebecca arranged to have LWML Bunco night on Monday, September 24 of this year. She and the church secretary did some wonderful, colorful advertising in the church, created a sign-up sheet that included offering childcare, transportation, and snacks. I helped with making "mite" boxes as table decorations, supplying information on the mission grants, and arranging for card tables. There was a $5 donation asked of whose attending, of which we planned to set aside the first 10% to LWML mites. We collected $195 at the door. Here s the really good part. We explained to the 36 "girls" who came what LWML was about and had a excitingly fun evening playing bunco and reading about the mission grants between sets. Sometime before the end of the evening we decided to donate 50% to LWML mites. After the games were over, prizes were given for silly things like how many games a person lost. The winners had the option of taking their prize in money or one of other prizes available. Several women chose to donate their prize money back to LWML, which made the final collection for mites $173. There was so much excitement about holding this event regularly that we have already set the next LWML Bunco Girls Night Out for January 15, The "girls" ranged in ages from 10 to 85, most of them came individually by themselves, and a lot of them did not know each other before that evening. Carol Swenson, Multi-Lakes Zone Co-Chairman The Joy of Quilts We celebrated LWML in October at East Ida Immanuel Lutheran Church, Monroe MI. Our ladies do many things to bless our congregation and community, but we especially appreciate the beautiful quilts they fashion. A special thanks to Vickie Fernandez, LWML Monroe Zone president, and to the ladies who made the beautiful quilts over the past year. Warmth and comfort will be given as they spread God's mercy and Gospel throughout our community and the world. The following women have given of their time and love in making these quilts: Jeanette Woelmer, Barb Dick, Lu Ann Garland, Marian Waldvogel, Kathryn Gautz, Brenda Palmiter, Joyce Davis, Paula Soto, Sheri Jensen, Donna Shields, Shirley Weilnau, and Michelle Woelmer. Jennifer Connelly, Monroe Zone The Joy of Volunteering We congratulate Past District President, Willie Marie Henry, who was honored with the Faces of Hope Award by Wellspring Lutheran Services. Wellspring s Faces of Hope Benefit Dinner was held in Livonia, MI, on October 24, Willie Marie, long time volunteer at Wellspring, is the current president of the Ladies Auxiliary Chapter 2 and also serves as vice president of the Wellspring Lutheran Child and Family Services District Board. She has served and supported children and families at Wellspring for more than 20 years. Willie Marie served as President of the LWML-Michigan District from She is currently serving as the Chairman of the Greater Detroit Zone.

7 LWML IN ACTION P AGE 7 Counselor s Corner Follow Our Leader Jesus Dear Sisters in Christ, it has been such a joy to serve as counselor to the LWML Michigan District, and I look forward to the years ahead, growing together in faith and in mission. Early in November, I had the opportunity to travel to St. Louis with our District President, Susan Gruber, and two other leaders in the district to attend the 2018 Assembly of Leaders, which turned out to be very intensive leadership training and strategic planning. This was the first time any pastoral counselors were included in this event, and with so many of us new to the role of district counselors, we had plenty of opportunity to learn Rev. Jonathon Bakker from the national counselors what our service entails and how we can work to help support all of you in your service. While there was a lot of information given during those few days we had together in St. Louis, one thing stood out the focus on our theme, which was Follow the Leader. Our Lord, Jesus Christ, is obviously our leader, and the rest of us serve well and faithfully as leaders only when we follow him. Praying for guidance, praying for others, attending to the Word of God, and receiving his gifts, we lead others to the Savior as we follow him. The theme verse for the Assembly of Leaders highlights this: What you have learned and received and heard and seen in mepractice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. (Philippians 4:9) On a personal note, I received the news just today that the pastor who baptized me was called to eternal life on Friday. Since hearing the news, I haven t been able to keep myself from thinking about him. I find myself thanking God for using him to grant me the gift of faith in those waters, and, at the same time, recognizing the fact that I have no idea how far reaching God s work will be through the pastoral service I have been privileged to give. I ran into that pastor about 24 years later when I was a seminary student. He d been retired nearly 10 years by then. When I realized he was the man who baptized me, I thanked him, and he smiled, amazed. He was only at that congregation for about a year and a half, and that time was hard and full of conflict. He took a call elsewhere and never looked back. It was easy to believe that nothing good came out of the ministry in that little church, but that was most certainly not the case. What a pleasant surprise for him, and a great lesson for all of us! Never assume that your faithful service to God in proclaiming the Gospel to the world bears no fruit our Lord is in control, he does the work, and he brings forth the harvest at the end. We simply follow, and do so with joy. God bless and keep you in Jesus, your leader; to him belongs all the glory, forever and ever! Rev.
