2 Catawba Valley Zone St. John s, Conover, hosted the Catawba Valley Zone Rally on May 5. Teirsa Lane, Director of Camp Linn Haven, shared how camp has made an impact on the lives of young women, and how they in turn share the love of Christ with others. Next year s rally will be hosted by Trinity Hmong Lutheran Church. Trinity Hmong Lutheran Church received its charter in May! The newly organized LWML society of Trinity held a very successful Egg Roll Sale July 1. The product was exceedingly delicious! Heart to Heart Sisters from Trinity, Pang Yang and Yeng Yang along with our District YWR, Coua Yang, experienced a wonderful time at the National convention! The members of the Christian Prison Pen Pal Ministry of Concordia extend heart felt thanks to the Carolinas District LWML. CPPPM received the Mission of the Quarter (2 nd quarter, 2017) grant of $525. These funds will be administered by the Dorcas Society of Concordia, Conover, NC. Monthly mailings contain two Bible studies composed or compiled by team members and are sent to 100 inmates In addition more than 50 individual letters are sent monthly by volunteer correspondents. The grant funds will be used for postage, supplies, and to fill occasional Bible requests. We will keep you posted on use of funds and progress of the mission. Albuquerque Jesus Christ Above All Wonderful experience! Here are the highlights from my perspective: Ida Mall tell folks who Jesus is; don t assume they know. Betty Knapp How do you show Jesus Christ All in your life? challenged us to write our own personal mission statement. Rev. Allen D. Anderson (1 Peter 2:1-10) We are living stones in Christ with diamond-like facets that He imparts. We need to share Christ! so much more the mission speakers, the singing, the Mariachi San Pablo band and singers, Katie Luther, selecting mission grants, electing new officers, nation-wide fellowship in Christ yes, much more! I am available to come to your LWML meeting and share my excitement about the convention for 15 minutes! (It will be hard to stick to that time limit.) Keep a joyful song ringing in your heart to the Lord! Mary Ann Upton, Catawba Valley Zone President A Big Thank You to everyone who contributed to the National Gifts from the Heart that were collected at the 2017 Albuquerque Convention. As of July 11, 2017 $30, in Gift Cards, $1, in Cash or Checks and 3,300 Arch Books has been collected. For a complete list of everything collected please visit Page 2 CAROLINAS CROSS CONNECTION

3 Central Zone I had a wonderful time at the LWML Convention in Albuquerque, NM June 22 25, Nine members from St. John s in Winston-Salem, NC traveled for two weeks in a 15 person van to the convention and back. We left on a Saturday morning and went to Nashville. There we took an On and Off tour of the city. Next we went to Memphis. One of our members has a brother who lives there and he gave us a personal tour. The next stop was Oklahoma City. It was a long ride that day and we only got to see the outside of the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial. The next day we arrived in Albuquerque. I ll get to the convention later. After the convention we went to Amarillo. On the way, while we were still in NM, we got caught in a hail storm that lasted for over one hour. The hail was golf sized and the first thing it did was put a big crack in the windshield. By the time the hail storm was over, we had about 10 major cracks in the windshield and dents on the roof. But, God is good. We made it to Amarillo. We could not get the windshield fixed in Amarillo, so we went on to Waco. One windshield was ordered and came in cracked, so we waited for another one and that one was cracked also. So we enjoyed Waco. We went to the Magnolia Plantation and took a tour of the Dr. Pepper Museum. Then on to Austin. There the windshield was fixed. We spent one night in Biloxi and one in LaGrange, GA and then home. We had a great and interesting time. The Convention was great. I had a chance to meet the new Archivist/Historian, Caroline Honeycutt. She will be sending out procedures and is planning a Boot Camp in The historical display that she put together for the convention was wonderful. There were so many displays that I had to return three times to get them all in. I picked up brochures from everyone. I also got a pair of flip flops from Concordia Chicago for being an alumni. I had my picture taken with Martin Luther. The very first mission speaker was Sanya Parson with Rebecca s Garden of Hope. She grew up in Winston-Salem, NC and her father was the pastor of St. Mark Lutheran church here in town. I knew her as a child. That started the convention out in the right way. The second mission speaker really touched my heart. We could not take any pictures and the live streaming had to be stopped. She could be in a lot of trouble back in Lebanon. The Mites in Action speaker, Steve Cohen from the Apple of His Eye, broke my heart when he reveled that his mother still does not speak to him since he became a Christian. Wendysue Fluegge was a great song leader. Two of my traveling companions were new timers and they were amazed at the long line of pastors for the communion service. Jan Struck was amazing as Katie Luther. It was wonderful to see Eden Keefe, Melissa Merker and Barbara Volk working at the National Level. The convention was great and exhausting and I am ready to do it again in two years in Mobile, Alabama. When s your anniversary? As we just celebrated the 75 th anniversary of LWML, have you thought about your society s anniversary? With the help of our Archivist, Cheryl Wulfert I have found that the Carolinas District started in I would like to know when each of the societies in the Carolinas District started. I would like to put together a booklet with the history of the Carolinas Societies. Cheryl has information on a lot of societies that she is going to share with me. But I would like each societies to research when they started and if they have and pictures and information about their first officers and members. Paula R. 7 Thoughts from your YWR Walking out of the airport and sitting at the back seat of Mary Ann's car, I was pumped up and excited about being here in New Mexico and joining the Convention. I honestly had no idea what to expect or what I was suppose to do. I just went with the flow. To be honest, I knew nothing about LWML except it stands for "Lutheran Women Missionary League", and we collect mites. That was it. Reflecting back on it now, I am so glad that I got the opportunity to go to the Convention. It was an eye opening experience for someone who knew nothing about LWML. I was stopped so many times by random people who I didn't know just because I was a YWR. They were so excited to talk and meet with YWRs, and that excitement made me realize the importance of my role as a YWR. We even had people like President Patti come in and talk with us about the future of LWML and the importance of YWRs. I got to connect, share, and interact with other YWRs that were pumped up about being there, and learned so much from them. Most of them were older than me and have been part of LWML longer than I have, so they had more ideas to share than I did, which was great for me. One of the best moments I remembered was listening to the Mites in Action talks. I think it was then that made me realize what LWML really was about: making a difference in people's lives all over the world by spreading and sharing the love of Jesus Christ with them. I now understood the importance of that little box that I keep filling up with coins. Everything just clicked together for me after the Convention. I am so thankful to all of the Carolinas LWML who sent me there to the Convention. To them it may be nothing, but to a young women coming from a small church with growing faith, it meant the world to her. I was ecstatic about going back to my little church to share with them about my experiences and the resources that I've gathered with the Heart to Heart sisters, and the love and joy of God I've received during my trip there. Overall, the Convention was great! I loved every aspect of it, and I thank God for allowing me to have that experience. I encourage all to take advantage of any opportunity that comes your way because you just don't know what God already has planned for you there. That's one thing I learned from this experience as well. Thank the Lord and may the Lord go with you wherever life takes you next. Coua Yang, Carolinas District YWR Page 7 CAROLINAS CROSS CONNECTION

10 Logo Meaning Through this identity, the hope is to empower members through deeper connections, tradition, and the desire to serve God. The symbol was created with this in mind; one that represents the members of both the LWML and the church. A heart to represent the love and giving nature of the members. A drop to symbolize the blood of Christ. A cross above all else to proudly show the purpose behind the efforts of the LWML. Please note that this is a copyrighted logo, there are correct and incorrect ways of using it. The Correct Way: To ensure the logo stands out clearly it must maintain minimum clear space on all sides. When available more space should be added to increase visibility. The horizontal logo must not be smaller than 2 inches wide so that you can read Lutheran Women in Mission. The heart icon, when used on its own cannot be smaller than 1/2 inches tall. There are 2 primary colors and whenever possible should be used. Pantone 267 (purple) and Pantone 110 (gold). The loco can also be in solid purple or white, with the purple backing or back and white. These are the only color variations that should be used. Color is vital in the visual representation of LWML. The correct color usage should be reflected throughout all communication and applications. There are also font restrictions. For the full brand guidelines please go to: Here s the link to a video that explains the definition of our new logo: ******************************************************************************* This is the LWML Carolinas District new logo. All of the district logos are purple and orange. Committee logos are to be green. If you have questions please contact Ashley Jenkins, Marketing & Communications Manager for LWML at ashley.jenkins@lwml.org, and she will send you the correct jpeg or png files needed. 11 Notes from our District President God's Mercy in Albuquerque So much planning, registering, making travel arrangements and finding replacements for Delegates and now it was time to leave for the 37 th Biennial Convention of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League in Albuquerque, NM. When we arrived we began to realize God's mercy all around us welcoming us to our Convention and the wonderful city. Friendly faces, with gifts to boot, welcomed us at the airport from our hosting LWML sisters. What wonderful planning had to have gone on by the host committee showing us the convention theme Jesus Christ above all would be with us for our stay. The excitement was all around us. 3,471 guests attended from all over the United States and 1 from Canada, their LWML President. Safe travel for so many women and their families showed us His mercy with very little problems. Opening worship gave many of us chills and thrills to see so many participate in the Lord's Supper and receive forgiveness to start our convention. Music, officers and all the pastors made this such a special service showing us God's mercy and His goodness. Through the examples Jesus shared while on earth, carloads and busloads of Gifts of Love were brought to embrace mercy with those less fortunate in and around Albuquerque. Because Jesus was the best example of showing mercy, servant events offered our women an opportunity to show mercy through their time and talents. The four convention offerings totaled over $166,000. Because He first loved us we were able to give back and extend mercy to others. Bible studies through out the convention empathizing God's mercy started with the pre convention study and continued all the way to the end of convention. 22 new mission grants were chosen with a new mission goal of $2,075,000. We have been shown how we can show mercy and love to others at home and abroad. Praise God! New officers were elected to share leadership with their sisters in the LWML, His mercy will be evident. Our new logo was shown for the first time giving us the look of being mission minded and merciful, a new updated look for our future. We sang, we danced, we prayed, we worshiped and became acquainted with many RSOs, all the time giving thanks for His mercy and proclaiming "Jesus Christ above all". Many hugs were given to old friends and also to many new friends and we so enjoyed the gift of fellowship showing His mercy reveled in us. Though the convention is over the 38 Carolinas participants will have memories that will be remain with us forever. I am sure the 7 delegates, 2 Heart to Heart Sister, one awesome Young Woman Rep and myself will always treasure the feeling we experienced and brought home. Our 27 other participants will share their experiences with anyone who will listen. I believe we all had a wonderful time. Many participated in other activities like a Hot Air Balloon ride and all sorts of before and after trips. I want to challenge all who attended to bring at least one more sister or brother in Christ to the next convention in Mobile, Alabama in "Jesus Christ is above all" in everything we do and for everyone we meet! "O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good and His MERCY endures forever (Psalm 136:1). Thank you for letting me experience this awesome event as your Carolinas District President. Blessings, Carolyn Volume 70 Issue 3 Page 11
