2 From the South Masonic charity is all around us. Numerous worthy masonic endeavors exist, all seeking to relieve others less fortunate, distressed or in need of financial assistance. These are all excellent causes. But what if we delve deeper into ourselves when considering what charity can and should mean to you. For to consider charity only as the act of giving and donating is possibly to err. No doubt charity is a sentiment of commiseration which leads us to assist the poor and deserving. However, I am ever mindful that charity is any act done freely and spontaneously out of friendship. The Masonic use of the word is much nearer this sense, for every Mason extends relief to a needy brother not as a duty but out of friendship. The Greeks used the word charisma, meaning a gift. Other words from the same root suggest rejoicing or gladness. Similarly, the Latins used carus, meaning dear and possibly signifying love. Eventually over time these roots came to mean grace, meaning a free unsought gift, as in the theological phrase, the grace of God, and charity. I believe the exercise of charity in all contexts can be likened to the cement which binds and perfects a building. Charity is the core of who we are as human beings and citizens. Thus charity is a central theme throughout Masonry and is strongly represented in our ritual and emulations. Let us strengthen one another with charity each day both in and out of the lodge. If you plan on attending this annual event, please visit the Grand Lodge website to register. The website: Dates: October 19-21, 2018 Where: San Francisco, CA The lodge will be having their traditional Friday evening dinner with those who are going to Grand Lodge. We will be dining at the same restaurant, Fior d Italia. We had a great time there the last time. After dinner, we normally adjourn to The Buena Vista Café for some Irish coffee and more fellowship and camaraderie. Please let the Master and/or Secretary know ASAP if you plan on attending this traditional dinner. We need to make the correct reservations! Applicants Interview Dinner Our October Applicants Interview Dinner will be on the 15th at 6:00 PM. The cost of the dinner is $15.00 per person. We will be having Sirloin Tips Bourguignon and Roasted Chicken as entrees and Pumpkin Pie for dessert. In addition, we will have Waldorf Salad and Steamed Broccoli for vegetables.
