The Tulsa Valley was proud to host the first Statewide 1-Day Reunion in a decade. On July 21, 2018 the three Valleys of the Oklahoma Scottish Rite congregated at the Tulsa Scottish Rite to conduct a 1-Day Reunion. The mandatory Degrees of the Rite were conferred by all three Valleys - Guthrie conferred the 4th Degree, McAlester conferred the 14th and 32nd Degrees, and Tulsa conferred the 18th and 30th Degrees. In total there were eight candidates from across the state, four of which now belong to the Tulsa Valley. In order for a man to be a candidate in the 1-Day Reunion, the petitioner was required to purchase a perpetual membership in his home Valley. We trust that these men will all take an active role in their home Valley and become contributing Scottish Rite Masons. Perpetual Endowed Members This is for you! First - Thank you for investing in the future of the Tulsa Scottish Rite by purchasing a PEM. Your role as a Perpetual Member denotes your leadership, dedication, and loyalty. This investment helps the Valley even when you can t be active at all times. Many of our Perpetual Members make an annual contribution by adding to their Perpetual Membership. By doing this, you allow the Valley to invest in the long-term goals of the Rite. We all know that time-value of money changes from year to year. Your investment many years ago does not have the same power it once had. We hope that you will consider making an addition to your PEM. Contact the Office with questions. 4 The Wisdom of Words and the Proverbs of Solomon Robert G. Davis, 33, G C We all know how important first impressions are. Who can forget the anxiety a young man feels when he meets the parents of his significant other for the first time? Who can forget the impact of one s first important job interview? How often is our first impression of a person or circumstance the most lasting? Psychologists inform us that it takes just one tenth of a second for us to judge someone and form our first impression of that person. It is the same way with perceptions. In the first few milliseconds of our perceiving something, we not only unconsciously comprehend what it is, we also decide whether or not we like it. In the world of ideas, first impressions make words very powerful. Indeed, the language of Freemasonry has been one of its greatest strengths since its inception. As 32 Masons, we have been given the extraordinary privilege of discovering literally hundreds of first impressions gleaned from the words of our Degrees. As one example, I will relate one of my earliest first impressions as a candidate. It was a single paragraph which was recited to me by the Venerable Master in the 4. He requested that I take the square given me when I first entered the Lodge and place it upon the Great Light of Masonry. He then said something I would never forget: You have now passed from the square to the compasses, as the geometrician passes from the straight lines and angles by which he measures the surface of the earth to the great curves and circles by which he calculates the movement of stars. Strive ever to rise above the level of the mundane and to climb the skies of spiritual and philosophical knowledge. For there, and not upon the earth, is the Truth to be found. My first impression of these powerful words was Oh My God! If the journey of the Scottish Rite is the path to spiritual and philosophical knowledge, this will surely take me beyond the world of my past experience to a place I have not yet been! Little did I know at that moment that this new journey in Masonry would actually carry me to the depths of my own consciousness so that I could discover the light of truth within myself, which, in turn, would define for me the ultimate purpose of my life. It was nothing less than my own soul s great adventure! As we all know, it turns out this first impression of the significance of the Rite was as reliable as truth itself. What does it mean to pass from the square to the compasses; from the earth to the stars? What is required to balance the world of the physical with that of the metaphysical? In what way are we as Masons connected with the metaphor of a Grand Architect? What do the tools of architecture inform us about the nature of ourselves and God? Why is it necessary that we make a journey beyond the comfort of what we already know when we also know that anything which takes us out of our comfort zone is generally a lot of work? We find the answer to these inquiries in the 12 of the Scottish Rite Master Architect. This Degree begins with an insight that was inspired by the Book of Proverbs, where we learn that knowledge and wisdom were the first divine attributes of creation. In the beginning wisdom was with the Great Architect, when he set his compass upon the face of the depth and appointed the foundations of the earth. The powerful words of Solomon s maxims teach us what wisdom is and how knowledge and contemplation give access to it. The Degree of Master Architect reminds us that we are all naturally endowed with the necessary functions to learn and think. But it is only through the path of knowledge that we acquire wisdom. We are made in God s image. We are all Master Architects. This means we are the continuation of God s creation. The task of each of us is to become the Adoniram of the world and continue the work of Hiram in building our own temple of life to the glory of God. The journey of the Scottish Rite teaches us in so many ways that the inner work of a Freemason is his own awakening of consciousness. It is always the awakening of consciousness that awakens our will. It is the faculty of our will that distinguishes us from the brute. It is the power of the mind that gives all situations and fortunes their character. It is the glory of a Man that he can bend the circumstances of his own condition. This truth, seemingly so obvious, was in fact one of the great secrets of antiquity, known only to a few. We can control our own destiny. We can make of the world what we choose by our own act of will. We can change the way a person treats us by the way we think about that person. Even if we fail to change that individual, we can change our own feelings by changing our perceptions. We, by our own natures, create the nature of the world in which we live. Thus, in a real sense, each man creates his own universe. That is what it means to move from the square to the compasses. Life is what we make it. The questions we must ask ourselves then are what will we do to acquire knowledge? How will we use knowledge to achieve happiness and contentment in our life? This is the essence of the Proverbs of Solomon and the instruction of the Master Architect. Wisdom is a gift of God, but the path to acquire it is knowledge. This process of passing from the square to the compasses is the hero s journey every brother of the mystic tie is admonished to make. The wisdom of the philosophers and the wisdom of the religious both consist of knowledge of divine things, which is the directing law for a loving humanity. And if we succeed in our quest, we will know honor, understanding, and the purpose of our life. The Tulsa Scottish Rite -4-

5 TULSA KNIGHTS OF ST. ANDREW By Jim Parham, 32, Chieftain This year marks the 25 th anniversary of the founding of the Knights of St. Andrew in 1993 by Brother Weldon Good, 33. He saw that the Tulsa Valley had a need for assistance during reunions. When he noticed that many brothers were joining the Scottish Rite but not returning to assist and participate, he developed the organization now known as the Knights of St. Andrew. There are now 134 Chapters in the USA and in four foreign countries. On July 20-21, 2018, the Biennial Knights of St. Andrew International Gathering was held in Waco, Texas. The Tulsa Valley Chapter #1 of the KSA, as the founding Chapter, was suitably honored at the festival. We were honored initially by being asked to bring our Claymore sword that knighted the very first KSA Knight in We were then honored once again by following the bagpipes and drums at the head of the assembly, under an arch of steel, into the Grand Lodge of Texas and placing it on the Altar to begin the ceremonies. It was awesome to see the Japanese delegation there. On the last night, we had a formal dinner with a roasted pig and a dance band. Myself, and four of my officers Jim Parham, 32 and our wives were in attendance. The next meeting in 2020 will be in Las Vegas. We are already making plans to attend. Two of the prominent speakers were Ill. S. Brent Morris, 33, G C, Managing Editor; The Scottish Rite Journal, and Robert L.D. Cooper the Curator of the Grand Lodge of Scotland Museum and Library (Edinburgh), and is also the custodian of the oldest and most prestigious Masonic documents in the world. The flexibility and enthusiasm of the Knights of St. Andrew make it one of the Valley's most active and desirable organizations. It is an excellent way to nurture and develop future leaders as they learn their organizational skills and gain a deeper admiration for our Order. It is limited to 32 Masons only, with a maximum number of 32 members. Our attire distinguishes us with our regalia and members must be selected and approved only after first being selected as a Squire. Only then can they reach the honor of becoming a Knight. Be sure and ask if any positions as a Squire are available. The weekend of September 15 th, Tulsa Valley Knights of Saint Andrew proudly represented the Tulsa Sco sh Rite and Oklahoma Masonry at Scotsfest 2018 in Broken Arrow Events Park. The three day fes val is Oklahoma s premier Cel c music fes val and Highland Games. Several of our Knights set up an informa on booth for anyone to come discuss ques ons they had on Free Masonry and the Sco sh Rite. Throughout the weekend we were pleased to have many Brothers and their families from other Valleys introduce themselves and watch the Highland Games from our tent. The space was a prime loca on for our Brothers and guests to view all the games throughout the weekend and cool off in the shade. We were happy to generate interest in several Brothers that wanted more informa on on joining the Tulsa Valley Sco sh Rite and many individuals wan ng to find out how to visit a local Lodge and possibly join our great Fraternity! We had an overwhelmingly posi ve response with our presence and have decided we will par cipate in the fes val again in 2019! M. Initiations: 12 Affiliations: 3 Reinstatements: 10 Deaths: 56 Current Valley Membership: 1773 The Membership Team can t stress enough the importance for each Scottish Rite Mason to attend his Blue Lodge meetings and invite the new Masons to take part in the Scottish Rite. These men will be very proud to call themselves 32nd Degree Masons if only you will ask him to join! It is with great remorse that we inform the Valley of the passing of Dr. Jim Tresner, 33, Grand Cross, on July 12, Dr. Tresner was internationally known as a Masonic author, writer, speaker and scholar. He always used his considerable skills on behalf of the fraternity. He was appointed a consultant to the Oklahoma Grand Lodge, the Oklahoma Masonic Charity Foundation, the Scottish Rite in Oklahoma, and the House of the Temple, the national Scottish Rite headquarters in Washington, DC. Dr. Tresner inspired almost every man who knew him to make the study of Freemasonry a lifelong love and experience. He may be gone, but his legacy of imparting Masonic knowledge will live on forever in those who knew him. In Honor of those we ve lost since our Spring publication: James F.
