2 1 Samuel 3: Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. 2 At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; 3 the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. 4 Then the Lord called, Samuel! Samuel! and he said, Here I am! 5 and ran to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. But he said, I did not call; lie down again. So he went and lay down. 6 The Lord called again, Samuel! Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. But he said, I did not call, my son; lie down again. 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. 8 The Lord called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. 9 Therefore Eli said to Samuel, Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, Samuel! Samuel! And Samuel said, Speak, for your servant is listening. 11 Then the Lord said to Samuel, See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make both ears of anyone who hears of it tingle. 12 On that day I will fulfill against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. 13 For I have told him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them. 14 Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli s house shall not be expiated by sacrifice or offering forever. 15 Samuel lay there until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the Lord. Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. 16 But Eli called Samuel and said, Samuel, my son. He said, Here I am. 17 Eli said, What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also, if you hide anything from me of all that he told you. 18 So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. Then he said, It is the Lord; let him do what seems good to him. 19 As Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. 20 And all Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was a trustworthy prophet of the Lord. (NRSV Translation) John 1: The next day Jesus decided to go into Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, Follow me. 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, We have found the one of whom Moses and the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth. 46 Nathanael said to him, Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see. 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards him and said, Look at this person, an Israelite in whom there is no deceit. 48 Nathanael said to Jesus, How do you know me? Jesus said, Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you. 49 Nathanael answered, Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the King of Israel.

3 Leigh Congregation IMPORTANT NOTICE re WEEKEND OF 24 & 25 JANUARY Next weekend, on the occasion of her retirement - there will a couple of special celebrations of Rev. Veitinia's ministry at Parramatta Mission. These will acknowledge her multiple contributions here since 2002, including the guidance and friendship that she has extended towards all congregations - as well as her many cross-cultural and community achievements. Saturday 24 January: A 'Farewell' with feasting and traditional ceremonies co-ordinated by the Leigh Fijian congregation will be held in Leigh Memorial's Fellowship Centre Hall. This will be a large scale event, with representatives from the Fijian community and various congregations from across Sydney in attendance. All PM congregations are welcome to attend. Sunday 25 January: A Combined Church Service + Luncheon will be held at the Westmead Church (for all 3 PM congregations), commencing at 10.00am. PLEASE NOTE: Leigh Memorial congregation members attending the Luncheon are requested to bring the desserts. NB: A donation towards the cost of the meal will be requested at the door. SUNDAY LEIGH - classes start back on Sunday 1 February. NB: A brief teachers' planning meeting will take place after morning tea. 4 Westmead Congregation More pictures commemorating Veitinia s service at the Westmead Please pass on to others who may have been away, that the 25th is the final Combined Farewell Service at Westmead for Rev Veitinia Waqabaca before she retires. For further details, please contact Jan. The Farewell Service will be conducted by the Parramatta Nepean Presbytery at 10am. Followed by a Light Lunch. You are also invited to a Fijian traditional farewell for Veitinia for Saturday, 24 th January, beginning at 3pm, held at Parramatta Mission. 11 50 Jesus said to him, Do you believe because I said I saw you underneath the fig tree? You shall see greater things than these. 51 And he said to him, Truly, truly I say to you, you shall see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man. (Translation by Keith Hamilton) Reflection A favourite question of people is what keeps you awake at night? Young Samuel is trying to get to sleep at night. Everything is quiet. He hears a voice. Is he dreaming or is this the voice of his master, Eli? Is this his own internal voice, or is he hearing voices? It might even be the voice of God? People who have a vocation will often speak of hearing a voice calling them to a task. Some people immediately identify who the voice is, and respond. Others take some time before responding. Professions usually test that call. The Church, irrespective of which expression, have has elaborate processes to test the call the call as to whether it is indeed a call from God, and not one s imagination. Not every person who thinks they have been called, have that confirmed by the church, and some want to become a minister or church leader because it seemed like a good idea at the time. On the other hand, some people hear voices that might call them or tell them to do all sorts of things, but the voice may not be the voice of truth. Indeed there are many people who have to deal with hearing voices every day, and they have had to learn to live with those voices, as well as taking medication as prescribed, and might even befriend that voice or those voices, yet not live by the directions of that voice. So what voices do we listen to? What voices are those of our imagination? There are also voices in the media, the voices of friends and family, and the question is which voice and voices should we listen to. Some people take cues for their life from listening to a media shock jock trying to keep ratings. And as we know, there are voices of destruction from people popularly called terrorists. So, whose opinion do we take on, and which opinions do we pass up? The story of Jesus calling people to be his disciples speaks of truth. The stories of Jesus in the Bible suggest that the voice of God is always a call to love people work for the best for all people - and a call to live together in community. Blessings, Keith Hamilton
