8 1 Samuel 1: On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; 5 but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb. 6 Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. 7 So it went on year by year; as often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. 8 Her husband Elkanah said to her, Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons? 9 After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the Lord. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. 10 She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord, and wept bitterly. 11 She made this vow: O Lord of hosts, if only you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as a nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head. 12 As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was praying silently; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was drunk. 14 So Eli said to her, How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine. 15 But Hannah answered, No, my Lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before my Lord. 16 Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation all this time. 17 Then Eli answered, Go in peace; the God of Israel grant the petition you have made to him. 18 And she said, Let you servant find favour in your sight. Then the woman went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband, and her countenance was sad no longer. 19 They rose early in the morning and worshipped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her. 20 In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, I have asked him of the Lord. (NRSV Translation)

9 Reflections The Bible is a remarkable document. It uses multiple literary forms and devices to tell stories of God s relationship with people across more than 3,000 years. The setting is often in patriarchal societies, in an age when stories and history were told usually by men about men. But the Bible has this subversive tendency to give prominence to women, or the poor are given insights others lack, or in an age when the first-born inherited much power as well as possessions, the youngest becomes the family leader. So, this story of the birth of Samuel, is actually Hannah s story. It would seem she is unable to bear children. But she remains faithful, even when sorely pressed. Eli is the wise man. He is the priest. Yet he is not full of grace. Indeed, it is fair to say he fails the test of Parramatta Mission s values of grace, inclusion, dignity, faith and hope. He does not ask an enquiring question of Hannah when he sees her. He jumps to conclusions, and condemns and abuses her. Hannah reveals great inner strength when she speaks following the Eli s torrent, and treats him with respect, as exemplified by her response. Only then does Eli speak the word of God to Hannah. The story concludes with Hannah bearing a child, who later becomes significant in the whole story of faith through the Bible. Hannah responds with a song of joy which you can read in 1 Samuel 2:1:10, which can be found in a Bible, or online. Hannah reveals both faith in God and the grace of God in her behavior. God is able to speak through even an ungracious, impatient, grumpy and deeply flawed priest, who will be eventually replaced by Samuel. God chooses a barren, despised woman from an obscure family to bear a prophet and leader for his people. The story is subversive. The story reminds us that God can work with and among people in society who are rejected by others the people facing homelessness, the person with a lived experience of a mental illness, the person of another faith, the person escaping domestic and family violence, the person with a substance addiction, the person who arrives here from another land. The story invites each one of us to look for the presence of God in the everyday affairs of life. A reminder that on Christmas Day, a lunch will be served in Parramatta. Twenty-six years ago, members of the congregations put on a Christmas Day lunch. It became the forerunner of Meals Plus. A particular role for members of the congregations is to be the hosts, to ensure everyone is welcomed, and no none has a lonely lunch. Blessings, Keith Hamilton
