OUR NEWS 28th October 2018 Our Vision A Community Transforming Lives Our Values, Grace, Inclusion, Dignity, Faith and Hope. Congregational Westmead & Parramatta, Hospitality, Community and Mental Health Services across Greater Sydney, Central Coast, Hunter and Mid-North Coast Parramatta Mission acknowledges that all of our work and our 36 sites are on the land of traditional owners. We pay respect to the traditional custodians of the land on which we gather, and acknowledge Elders past and present, and emerging leaders.

WESTMEAD Congregation WORSHIP Thank you to Daniel and Robyne for leading the worship service today. Following the worship service today we will be joined by Rev. Susan Phelan from the Life and Witness Consultation Team who will bring a report and some feed back from previous consultation with our congregation. We look forward to learning more about this process, which will encourage us in our mission and ministry at Westmead. Morning tea will follow this talk. ANGEL TREE A collection box is on the front desk for donations to enable the purchase of Christmas gifts for children of inmates in correctional centres. This is an important ministry as we seek to support the families with gifts for the children and a hamper for the family. Collection will continue for the next two Sundays. PLAY GROUPS Play Group is on Monday only at present. Thank you to Sue and Carol for helping. Thank you to Sarah Bishop for leading last Monday. Wednesday play group will recommence on 14th November, 2018 WHILE REV. CHRISTINE IS AWAY Rev. Christine will be away until 8th November, Our Elders and leaders are available to talk to and there will be various people assisting Daniel with worship across this time. Please pray for Rev. Christine and her family, especially her daughter Sarah, and Jessica Tindall, and all others who are sitting for their HSC exams at present. Also please pray for Daniel and leaders and all who are keeping Westmead activities going while Rev. Christine is away. NUTRITIOUS NOVEMBER. During November, Westmead Congregation will serve nutritious and tasty food for morning tea or afternoon tea, as we are ever mindful that there are many people among us who have health problems which require special thought about what they eat. We are sharing this responsibility by being mindful of the food we serve. If you contribute food during this time, some suggestions are fruit platters, cheese and crackers and dips, tacos, low GI foods. Let s see how we all feel at the end of November. We would be glad for any further suggestions for the menu. MINI MARKET 17TH NOVEMBER, 2018 Keep this date free for a morning Mini Market here at Westmead. More information next week. 8 Mark 10: And they came to Jericho; and as Jesus was going out from Jericho with his disciples and a large crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! 48 And many aggressively told him to stop shouting and to be quiet; but he went on shouting all the more, Son of David, have mercy on me! 49 Standing still, Jesus said, Call him. And they called the blind man, saying to him, Be cheerful; rise, he calls you. 50 So throwing away his outer coat, he jumped up and came to Jesus. 51 And Jesus answering him, said, What do you want me to do for you? And the blind man said, Master, I want to see from above. 52 And Jesus said to him, Go your way; your faith has healed you. And immediately he saw from above, and followed him on the way. (Translation by Keith Hamilton) Reflections The narrative from Mark about Bartimaeus depicts him calling out to Jesus to see. Is it sight from above or sight again; the word in Greek is the same. Perhaps there is a double meaning. Bartimaeus physical eyesight is restored, but also his spiritual eyesight is renewed. He sees who Jesus is as the Son of God, and he follows him on the way. Bartimaeus is unique in Mark s gospel as the only person who is healed and then follows Jesus of the way. In the very next verse in Mark, Jesus enters Jerusalem, and the crucifixion. Bartimaeus gets it. This gift comes from God, not of our doing, and only for those who call out. The staff: Brad and Hahn, and volunteer Vanessa at our Smithfield office, who provide Mental Health Respite Carers Support (MHRCS), provided great hospitality when the executive meet there last Monday. Thank you.
People who care for a person with a lived experience of mental illness, need lots of support, and this is the aim of MHRCS. MHRCS provides services for over 300 people who are carers of someone with a mental health concern. These services are provided across Nepean, Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury and Sydney South West. MHRCS host a range of events and activities to acknowledge and celebrate the Carers. This includes workshops, yoga at Glenbrook, arts and crafts at Bunnings Penrith, carer week at Springwood, carers support in Katoomba and Lithgow, outings/tours/walking groups, carers advisory and consultation group, social support groups, young carers outing and larger celebrations such as Luna New Year in Cabramatta, Carers week and mental health month events. With partnerships with local community, NDIS, Uniting, and CatholicCare, MHRCS assist the services and support to Carers.
PM engagement days involve visiting a cross-section of activities and services of PM that covers the congregations, hospitality, community and clinical services. Here is the recent group visiting Leigh Memorial church, and Rev Dr Manas Ghosh, sitting front right, spoke about the congregations, and also the site as a gathering place for people over 6,000 years. Anwar who is the Muslim Chaplain, with Sarah PM UC chaplain and Keith, SM / CEO at the Children s Hospital Westmead Pastoral Care Week. The table setup in the main gallery attracted much attention, as did the chocolate brownies and date and walnut loaf made by Sarah s mum. The seven chaplains, representing Christian and Muslim faiths, provide cover across the entire week. Blessings, Keith Hamilton.
Thank You To Momentum Consulting Group Parramatta Momentum Consulting had their Parramatta office split into pairs and hit the streets of Parramatta to follow clues/complete challenges to see who would win the race! It was an awesome day with lots of team bonding. The contestants of the race were sent to Parramatta Mission Reception for one of their clues; however to receive the clue; the teams had to provide items of food donated to Meals Plus (Picture below). Momentum also donated $50 toward the Meals Plus Program. It was certainly very competitive and congratulations to all involved.
